Based on the excerpt from "Of Plymouth Plantation" by William Bradford and from the videos, the message that William Bradford is trying to convey in this narrative is despite the hardships being faced, one should never give up on their aspirations. At the beginning of the excerpt the passengers, and Bradford were still aboard the Mayflower and on their journey to America. On September 6th, he wrote about how many of the passengers were afflicted with sea sickness, but, there was one man who continued to lift peoples spirits, despite the sickness. This man died of disease and was the first among many thrown overboard. The other passengers knew the chances of dying of disease, but continued to be hopeful about the journey to America. After 66
I believe Bradford’s audience for his journals in Of Plymouth Plantation, is to target anyone in the future generation. It is especially
“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts”
As you go through the journey of life you begin to realize the many obstacles you have to over come but what charts your growth is home you over come them. This quote resembles the story of My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier. Brothers Christopher and James have been writing historical fiction for young people since the early 1970s and have been known as masters of the genre. This book was named a Newbery Honor Book in 1975 and recently received a Phoenix Award. It has also taught an entertaining glimpse into a teenager's life in colonial times. Using real dates, people, and historical events it has a almost reality based story to grow and progress as a character of the American Revolution.
The New England and Chesapeake colonists settled in the new world for different reasons like religious freedoms in the North and quick profits in the South.
Steinbeck and Hodgins both examine the idea of “promised land” where their characters, Steinbeck’s Joad family and Hodgins’s returned soldiers, hope to find both joy and prosperity. The characters, however, later learn that the idea of the “promised land” is simply just that - an idea - because it does not exist. While the “promised land” is different in both novels, it being a beautiful home and paying jobs in The Grapes of Wrath and actual land for settlement in Broken Ground, it represents the same hope for both novels – the hope of new, positive beginnings. Both Steinbeck and Hodgins lead readers to believe that the relocation of their characters is setting the stage for a turn of events in their lives, a turn for the better. This change, though, ...
I believe that this story, is also a way of saying that you should never give up hope, no matter how
Of Plymouth Plantation by William Bradford gives us an insight into the endurance of the early settlers and the kind of pain they went through in order build the foundation of our great nation. They embarked on the new world and developed a colony from the ground up. However, there troubles started long before they even stepped foot on the land. With a strong hold on their religious beliefs, they continued their voyage to the new world even though there were questions about the safety of the vessel. They managed to work hard on the ship and make it to the new world, tired and hungry, only to learn that there was no rest to be found, but even more work.
and cursing them daily….he didn't let to tell them that he hoped to help cast
In conclusion, never giving up is one of the most important lessons that you can learn in your life time. This was shown in the novel “Lesson Before Dying” by the characters Jefferson, Miss Emma, and Grant. Jefferson learned to become a man before he died. Jefferson finally showed everyone that he did not give up on life like how everyone thought he did. Miss Emma pushed her old fragile body in order to help Jefferson. Miss Emma demonstrated
Have you ever woke up in the morning and asked yourself, “Why am I living this life?” Throughout the book of Walden, Henry David Thoreau questions the lifestyles that people choose; he makes his readers wonder if they have chosen the kind of lifestyle that give them the greatest amount of happiness. Thoreau stated, “Most men, even in this comparatively free country, through mere ignorance and mistake, are so occupied with the factitious cares and superfluously coarse labors of life that its finer fruits cannot be plucked by them().” This quote is important because most of society these days are so caught up in work and trying to make ends meet that they lose the values in life. Thoreau was forced to change his life when he found himself unhappy after a purchase for a farm fell through. On Thoreau’s journey he moves to Walden and builds a house and life from nothing but hard work, symbolizes many different objects.
In early America, socio-economic class, agriculture, religion and gender played four very important roles in regional distinctions of this newly developing country. Even though agriculture, religion, and gender were extremely important, the biggest factor was socio-economic life. A person’s socio economic class was what determined their life style from a wealth, treatment, and dress style and home, which are major aspects of human life. In Everyday Life in Early America, David Freeman Hawke explains how each of these four factors determined the life style of each early resident of America as well as the overall development of the country in its beginning years to emerge into a growing and improving nation (continue)
Plantation life in Virginia required a large family and slaves for agriculture labour. As most of the settlers coming to Chesapeake colonies caught diseases and died. Also, between 1619 and 1622, 3570 people arrived in Jamestown but only one-third of them were alive. This was caused by Powhatan warriors who attacked and killed 347 of the settlers. By 1622, after the population had almost been wiped out in 1622, they imported women to Virginia to get married to the settlers, which did not bring any sign of growth in population by nature increase. So when the settlers had family, usually women were supporting their families by cooking, gardening, childcare, and laundries. Also, men took in part of helping their wives with the laundry, drying,
William Bradford is the epitome of somebody who never intended to become the person he became, never seeking out leadership, or fame, he just wanted to help his fellow man live a better life of religious freedom. However, once he did find himself in the role of leader, he is able to begin turning a few dozen men and their families from scared, sick, and unprepared, immigrants into vibrant, self-supporting compatriots, who together began rising a new country.
Hope is one of the most important aspects of one’s life and we know that even when faced with tough circumstances you can retain compassion and hope. In the novel The Road, The Poem Still I Rise and the films V for Vendetta and The Shawshank redemption we see the same message throughout. We see the idea that you must always have hope and determination in order for freedom and a better life. In the road we see how the hope of a better life at the coast keeps the father and son alive and In V for Vendetta, V gives the public hope for the new life that they have been longing for. In still I rise we see Angelou showing the audience the importance of how important hope is as it allows you to pic yourself up even when faced with tough circumstances, and finally in The Shawshank redemption we see how without the hope of having a life of freedom that he deserves, Andy wouldn't have been able to escape the prison or even escape.
Will Smith portrays a character of a homeless father who is struggling to make is boy happy. With love and hope, they battle through the cold nights sleeping outside and the days without food. The first quote states, “Don't ever let someone tell you, you can't do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they want to tell you you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period.” (“Pursuit of Happyness”). This quote demonstrates an optimistic culture because Will Smith tells his son to not give up ever even if he wants to. He wants his son to keep trying and to always be a go getter no matter what the consequences are. This whole movie is powerful and has such an amazing message. Here is this single father who has nothing but his son and a few bucks but he never gives up.The second quote states, “Hey dad, you wanna hear something funny? There was a man who was drowning, and a boat came, and the man on the boat said "Do you need help?" and the man said "God will save me". Then another boat came and he tried to help him, but he said "God will save me", then he drowned and went to Heaven. Then the man told God, "God, why didn't you save me?" and God said "I sent you two boats, you dummy!" “Pursuit of Happyness”). This quote demonstrates a optimistic culture because this man has hope that
