THEMES, OBJECTIVE, OBJECTIVITY AND VALIDITY IN LIVY’S –HANNIBAL Livy’s “Hannibal in Rome “ is a historic tale that delves into the conflict between Rome and Carthage during the Second Punic War (Harris,1979).With its rich narrative and detailed accounts of the military strategies of the legendary Carthaginian general,Hannibal Barca, Livy’s work offers a unique perspective on this pivotal moment in an ancient history. For instance, his use of historical figures like Hannibal and the Romans, significantly illustrate the virtues, vices and the consequences of human actions that includes warfare. Additionally, by recording Rome’s conflict with powerful counterparts like Carthage, Livy may have intended to instill a sense of national pride and identity among his Roman readers, highlighting their ancestors’ triumphs and sacrifices in the defense of the Republic. Last but one, on objectivity, Livy's history on Hannibal leans towards a perspective that glorifies Rome, while opponents like Hannibal are painted in a negative light (Livy, 1972).
