Washington, DC is a spectacular place. This being my first time in DC, I was in awe of everything and all the historical places I encountered. The presence of the monuments and history is what made the capitol so magnificent. Having only read about the Lincoln memorial, I never had the chance to experience the sensation of being inside such an honorable place of importance. The imposing white marble walls of the memorial and the many people surrounding it could be seen from afar. Arriving at the location, an unknown feeling came over me. I was experiencing history in a whole different level. When I think about a memorial, the term remembrance comes to mind. Seeing the statue of Abraham Lincoln brought pieces of memories from history class and evoked thoughts of what it might have felt like to be in his shoes. I was astonished by the statue’s enormousness and how grand Abraham Lincoln looked in his chair. The size of the statue compared to pictures from books and elsewhere was surreal. Abraham Lincoln was a very “powerful and prominent individual” in the history of our nation, the statue’s design and size reflected upon that. Looking around me, I wanted to know what the others thoughts were on seeing his statue and how they felt in that building. I finally had the courage to ask one or two people what they thought; they all had the same appreciation as me. Hearing about an important person or learning about them in a history book gives you vast knowledge but it doesn’t evoke the feeling of utter appreciation as the memorial does. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, many people wanted to build a memorial in honor of him. They wanted to be able to show how important he was to shaping our nation and to “honor his existence”. I noticed how the satellite records had a down fall. It had become bankrupt and got closed down. This place was the center of the neighborhood, and the center of music for the city, and now it is closed down.(Staxs Museum) What is very shocking is that the neighborhood slowly decreased as well. Then a group of local entrepreneurs invested 17 million into the ran down studio and created the Stax Museum. The Stax Museum is now used for displaying top artist and expressing how soul ran through the city and even the country right in Memphis Tn.(MTV News) The community of course has immediate positive feedback. The Stax Museum provided community outreach programs, educational programs, and tutoring for students. The Stax Museum even has a Soulville charter school, and The Stax Music Academy. The museum went as far as branching out to other predominately African American neighborhood schools to implement its traditions and positive effects in to the other communities. The museum has a stamp on the city. It is the center of soul music and plays a major role in Memphis TN.
Whenever people discuss race relations today and the effect of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, they remember the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was and continues to be one of the most i...
Each year, America’s travel and tourism industry generates approximately $1.5 trillion dollars in economic output, or about 2.6% of the country’s gross domestic product (Select USA, 2016). Nearly 20% of this economic activity is directly related to accommodations, which serve the short term lodging needs of pleasure and business travelers. Unlike other American economic sectors, this lodging industry is a highly fragmented, diversified market with an incredible variety of suppliers. Temporary overnight lodging can range from undeveloped campsites, hostels, and capsule hotels all the way up to mansions and incredibly luxurious five store hotels. Price ranges run the gamut from just a few dollars a night to thousands of
Memphis has the second largest population in the state of Tennessee but it has the history of citizens living in poverty and poor economic opportunities in the state. Many Americans across America do not believe hunger and malnutrition are issues that plague our neighborhoods viewing it as a “third-world problem”. Memphis has been one of the poorest metro areas in America, and in 1968 most living in those conditions were the African- American community. Following the assassination of close friend Dr. Martin Luther King, Rabbi James Wax and the Temple of Israel chose to start the Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association with several church leaders to combat the poverty and racial divide in Memphis. Today the organization serves over 50,000 people in the city and have partnered with 200 congregations in West Tennessee. According to Rabbi James Wax, The organization’s main focus are to target the senior citizens and youth in the city implementing many programs to provide services from hot meals, shelter programs, to after school programs.
1. The philosophy behind the 100% Satisfaction Guarantee is to have the guests act as quality-assurance inspectors by identifying quality deficiencies and reporting them to hotel employees. I do think that this is a good way to improve service quality; however, I am not sure that it is the best way. While it may seem to consumers that employees will try harder to satisfy them, if employees are empowered to refund a customer’s money, they do not have to answer to management, they can just do it.
Nearly three centuries ago, black men and women from Africa were brought to America and put into slavery. They were treated more cruelly in the United States than in any other country that had practiced slavery. African Americans didn’t gain their freedom until after the Civil War, nearly one-hundred years later. Even though African Americans were freed and the constitution was amended to guarantee racial equality, they were still not treated the same as whites and were thought of as second class citizens. One man had the right idea on how to change America, Martin Luther King Jr. had the best philosophy for advancing civil rights, he preached nonviolence to express the need for change in America and he united both African Americans and whites together to fight for economic and social equality.
The severe layoffs in Wilmington forced us to confront the significance of losing our hometown. By coming home to work, we have had the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to repairing the place that anchors us to the world. The things that make Wilmington an important place to us are the same things that make our work powerful, such as its historical narrative, the communal social ties we share with the people with whom we work, and inspiration provided by our friends and families. Working as members of our own community gives our work a unique purpose that only arises when the people engaged in the work are fully anchored to the place in which they work. We hope that our work will help shift perspective back to the value of places, and provide others with a living model for the impact that can be made by investing in the places that make us who we are.

This year my honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, and I participated in the Martin Luther King Day of Service Project. This project offered awards to organizations that positively impact the community. In addition, the project honored Dr. King’s legacies of non-violent activism, racial equality, service to others and social uplift. This was a 10-week project in which we served our community for eight weeks. Although I’ve participated in this project for
