Hammurabi’s Code of Laws

King Hammurabi ruled Babylonia and went on to create a set of laws called Hammurabi’s Code. Hammurabi was given power when he was 18 years old and reigned for 42 years. He also was the 6th king in the Babylonian dynasty, after his dad Sin-Muballit; the 5th king.
Hammurabi was born around 1810 BC on Babylon, ruled from 1792 – 1750 BC, and died in 1750 BC from unknown causes. Hammurabi’s Code of laws was the most significant accomplishment of his life. Located near his ancient kingdom was the Euphrates River; where people would have to jump in to demonstrate their guilt or innocence, and if they drowned, they were guilty. He sent experts to get together laws already enforced from his Kingdom in the cities he overtook. He changed but didn’t use all of the laws the experts brought him, as well as made his own. Hammurabi created 282 laws and inscribed then on a piece of black diorite stele that was 7 feet, 5 inches in height.
Law 174 from Hammurabi’s Code states, “If she bears no sons for her second husband, the sons of her first husband shall have the dowry.” I believe that this law is communicating that if the woman is unable to have another son in the second marriage, after being divorced from the first marriage, then the sons from the first marriage will receive the dowry. If however, the woman has girls, the woman would keep the money, or if the husband dies, she’d also keep the money.
Law 19 also from Hammurabi’s Code declares, “If he holds the slaves in his house, and they are caught there, he shall be put to death.” This law I feel is saying that because a slave is illegal one they have run away, and goes to someone for shelter, and the person is caught, they are a criminal because they didn’t report the
