During the late sixteenth century, the Renaissance movement was in full swing with many scholars, musicians, and artists studying the classical period. Many European scholars looked to the Greeks and Romans for inspiration. A lot of famous works from the Renaissance were inspired by Greek and Roman art. Shakespeare was no exception; he embedded a lot of classical references into most of his plays. In fact, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar was just a reenactment of Julius Caesar’s death. After the King and Queen left the room, Hamlet states that his father was “So excellent a king, that was to this Hyperion to a satyr” (Hamlet, 1. 2. 139-140). Hamlet is basically saying that his father was an awesome and way better king than Claudius. The comparison makes sense since a satyr was known as the epitome of animal lust and carnal passion (Allingham). He is taking multiple jabs at his uncle Claudius in this statement alone. He first elevated his father to the level of a deity by comparing him to Hyperion. Then he lowered Claudius to the level of a lustful animal with carnal passion. This is referring to the relationship between Claudius and Gertrude, which he sees as incestuous and vile. Hamlet later says, “Frailty, thy name is woman A little month, or ere those shoes were old With which she followed my poor father’s body Like Niobe, all tears, why she, even she O God, a beast that wants discourse of reason Would have mourned longer married with my uncle” (Hamlet, 1. 2. 146-151). The key moment in the play is when the actor says, “On Mar’s armor, forged for proof eterne, with less remorse than Pyrrhus’ bleeding sword now falls on Priam” (Hamlet 2. 2. 430-433). Although this is somewhat confusing because Hamlet could be identifying himself with Pyrrhus the avenger or he could be identifying the victim, with his father and the killer with Claudius (Allingham). Later on, Hamlet intentionally tells the actors to skip to the line “come to Hecuba” (Hamlet 2. 2. 440). This shows how Hamlet is trying to compare the emotions of Hecuba queen of Troy to Gertrude’s emotions even though unlike the story, Gertrude didn’t witness her husband’s death (Allingham). The actor gives us vivid imagery when he says “When she saw Pyrrhus make malicious sport in mincing with his sword her husband’s libs, the instant burst of clamor that she made, Unless things mortal move them all, would have made milch the burning eyes of heaven, and passion in the gods” (Hamlet 2. 2. 452-457). Time never stops moving forward and neither do the changes that humans make to today’s society, so why should we use Elizabethan references to make the same point that modern points could make. It would be similar to building a house but only using tools available centuries ago, it takes longer and is not as effective as using today’s tools and methods. The allusions used in Hamlet are a great example of references that would have been understood by Elizabethan teens, but if it is going to be read by modern teens the allusions should be revised so the reader understands what the writer is trying to say. That is why updating these allusions would open up Hamlet to a whole new teenage audience.

The context of the Ghost's speech and presence addresses the importance of practice values in the Elizabethan era. In comparison to Kenneth Branagh's 1996 film adaptation of Hamlet, he has also successively produced an unabridged modernized version of the play. The movie captivated the same social, economic, and cultural values that Shakespeare was attempting to use to connect to the Elizabethan audience.
This soliloquy by Hamlet is where he first devises the plan of the “Mouse Trap” (Act III, scene 2). It begins with Hamlet describing how he has heard that people can be overcome with guilt and remorse of their “malefactions” that they openly proclaim them, when viewing a scene of a play similar to that of their crime. As a result of this Hamlet resolves to set a trap for Claudius, in which he will watch a play that has a scene closely resembling the murder of Old King Hamlet. Hamlet reasons that upon viewing this scene, if Claudius is indeed guilty of Old King Hamlets murder, he will surely show some visible sign. And so Hamlet will “observe his looks … tent him to the quick”. The meaning of these two lines is that Hamlet will watch his uncle closely, and probe his conscious to see if he flinches. By gauging Claudius’ reaction, Hamlet will be able to determine whether or not he is guilty, if this is the case Hamlet states “I know my course.” Hamlet will avenge the murder of his father by killing Claudius. Hamlet then proceeds to describe how the spirit he has seen may be the devil trying to trick him into doing its work. Hamlet concludes that he will “have grounds more relative than this [the spirit]” and that “The play’s the thing” that he will use to “catch the conscience of the king.”
As for Act III, Scene I, this scene starts off in a room within the castle, where King Claudius, Queen Gertrude, Polonius, Ophelia, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern are in play. To start thinking off, King Claudius had asked Rosencrantz and Guildenstern if they had found any sort of information that they can use to find out what is wrong with Hamlet. Though gentlemanly, the two sadly did not have much information to figure out what is wrong with Hamlet, due to his cryptic questions and answers. If anything, they do know now that he is truly insane. Hamlet’s Concern with Death In Hamlet’s first soliloquy (ll. 1.2.129-159) , Shakespeare uses a biblical lexicon, apostrophes, and depictions of corporeal decay to show Hamlet’s preoccupation with the fate of a person after death.

Fear paralyzes him as he holds off on getting revenge on the new King Claudius, who stole the royal throne by murdering Hamlet’s father. However, it isn’t just fear that makes him hesitant as he reasons the situation. Hamlet hesitates to take action because he struggles with making his own choices, just like his weak-minded mother, Gertrude.
Oddly, it appears that Gertrude possess more significance to Hamlet than one first anticipates. Her swift call to matrimony leads Hamlet into a spiraling quarry of depression and grieving. This mirrors the Oedipus complex. Gertrude sexually commits herself to Claudius causing Hamlet to feel a sense of jealousy and disappointment. In retaliation, he expresses his repressed desire of love through his unruly comments. He even goes as far as to say that the love is incestuous. Furthermore, in Act 3 scene 4, Hamlet confronts his mother directly in a closet. Addressing concern over her sexual actions, he exclaims “In the rank sweat of an enseamèd bed, / Stewed in corruption, honeying and making love / Over the nasty sty” (III.iv.104-106). Not only does this quote show that Hamlet disapproves his mother’s marriage, but also that he believes Claudius is a wicked criminal. Towards the end of the play, Hamlet becomes enraged and accuses his mother for marrying his uncle in such a short time after his father’s death. The incestuous relationship suggest that his mother might have been involved in her husband’s murder, which is more reason to kill Claudius. Gertrude is a loving figure that is unable to understand Hamlet’s delicate state. Her way of solving problems is by isolating those that confront her, instead of analyzing her own mistakes and owning up to them. When Hamlet walks into his mother’s bedroom, he kills Polonius who is hiding behind the arras, and compares the murder to his mother’s guilt. “A bloody deed! Almost as bad, good mother, / As kill a king, and marry with his brother” (3.4.28-29). The queen cannot handle and truth and tells Hamlet to stop speaking. “O Hamlet, speak no more: / Thou turn’st mine eyes into my very soul, / And there I see such black and grained spots / As will not leave their tinct” (3.4.89-92). It’s a similar reaction of guilt, like Claudius who didn’t want to continue seeing the murder play because he didn’t want to accept the reality of his crime. In another instance, the queen decides to send Hamlet to England to prevent another death. Here, her solution is cowardly and says a lot about her character. She is inclined to go for the easy way out, rather than finding a solution to the huge mess she’s caused. In this scene, the reader can apply Gertrude as the antithesis to Hamlet. Unlike Hamlet who considered ethical and an innocent young man, Gertrude is described as traitor, wicked woman, and an adulterate. Her lust and external pleasures have impacted her family greatly and those she governs over. She is a shallow woman who does not see the consequences of her decisions. Hamlet procrastinates when avenging his father’s death, which is his tragic flaw. Hamlet appears to be a coward as well as depressed. He finds himself questioning his own ambitious motives such as revenge and hatred toward his murderous uncle. Hamlet tells Horatio, his friend that he is going to fake madness as he loses his determination. It is Hamlet’s hubris that makes me begin to believe he is mad. Hamlet does at one point have doubt concerning the honesty of the ghost. His various reasons for delay in seeking revenge is that he wants to make sure his uncle Claudius is one hundred percent guilty and at the same time does not want to hurt his mother. He has too much Oedipus complex, love for his mother.
