The act starts off with Polonius talking with Reynaldo. It turns out the Polonius wants Reynaldo to go to Paris in order to spy on his son Laertes. Polonius want Reynaldo to ask for Laertes in order to find out more about the reputation that he has made for himself in Paris. It even seems that Polonius is suggesting Reynaldo to lie in order get to Laertes. When Polonius finally sends Reynaldo off, Ophelia enters and seems scared. It turns out that she had encountered Hamlet who had appeared mad, pale, and in a terrible shape before her. Polonius asks Ophelia if she has been rejecting Hamlet has he had commanded. In the next scene the King is welcoming Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two good friends of Hamlet over. The King asks the two gentlemen if they are able to spy on Hamlet for him. The Queen seems to agree with the King and assures Rosencrantz and Guildenstern will be compensated. As they exit, Polonius enters to tell the King that the ambassadors of Norway, Voltimand and Cornelius, have arrived. Voltimand and Cornelius bring news that the Uncle of young Fortinbras has been able to calm down his nephew from trying to invade Denmark. Polonius decides to speak to the King about Hamlet when the ambassadors leaver. Polonius then reads a love that he took away from Ophelia that was given to her by Hamlet. Polonius then starts explaining to the King that he ordered Ophelia to reject Hamlet and that that could be the cause of his changed character. Polonius comes up with the plan to hide behind the tapestry while Ophelia and Hamlet talk in order to see if he is right. In the play,”Hamlet, Act 3 scene 1” the target audiences between both plays were to a wide variety of people. Back when Hamlet was first written, it was made to be viewed by a wide variety of audiences. Typically during the renaissance era, plays were made more common to the lower part of society; this being why Hamlet was written. Although both plays are to the same audience, the first one is more distinct into who it wants viewed. It had elegance, and was more formal and professional. You could see in the audience people were wearing suits a formal attire. As to the second one, it was smaller scale, and the audience had people in shorts and sweats.
Act II scene i of William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet is a scene in which a lot is revealed. In this scene Polonius sends his servant, Reynaldo, to France to see Laertes and also to spy on him. As Reynaldo is on his way out, Ophelia comes into the scene and she is very distraught. She explains to Polonius that Hamlet had confronted her in a very unkempt state. Hamlet had grabbed her wrist and held her there for a few moments and then sighed. In this entire encounter Hamlet did not speak. Polonius is convinced that Hamlet is madly in love with Ophelia and that in addition to Polonius forcing Ophelia to distance herself from Hamlet is that is the reason for this encounter. The scene ends with Polonius going to see Claudius of his idea. This scene shows evidence of dramatic irony because Polonius is convinced that Hamlet is mad because he is in love with Ophelia but the audience knows that Hamlet is only pretending to be mad.
In the first scene of Act II, Polonius and Ophelia discuss the meaning of Hamlet's odd behavior. Though the two characters agree his actions arise out of the torment of spurned love, they arrive at that point through very different means. At the beginning of the dialogue, Ophelia says that she has been "affrighted" by Hamlet in her bed chamber. (II,i 75) Her encounter with the Prince left her scared about his real intentions. She says that he looks like he has been,"loosed out of hell/To speak of horrors". (II,i 83-4) The very fact that Hamlet does not speak one word to Ophelia makes him look even more intimidating. By not speaking anything, Hamlet at once strengthens his image as a madman, as well as shrouding his real intentions towards those around him. Just following this passage comes a place in the text where we can see how the character of Ophelia has been manipulated by Polonius. After his "hint" that he might be doing this out of frustrated love, Ophelia says that that is what she truly does fear. (87) Her feelings of pity and concern are shaped by her father in order to fit his case of madness against Hamlet.
They decided to invite some of his college friends to watch over him. The Queen offered many thanks for their decision to watch him. “For the supply and profit of our hope, / Your visitation shall receive such thanks / As fits a king’s remembrance.” (2.2.24-26). Claudius asked Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to get answers out of him, making them seem more like spies than helpful friends. When Hamlet shows up to Ophelia’s house, seemingly mentally disturbed, Ophelia tells her father. Polonius decides to tell the King of Hamlet and Ophelia’s relationship that he thinks that may be the source of his problems. The King and Polonius set up a meeting between the two. Seeming to know he is being watched, Hamlet acts very wildly, leading them to believe Ophelia was not the cause of his insanity. The King is not impressed at Polonius. “Love! His affections do not that way tend, / Nor what he spake, though it lacked form a little, / Was not like madness. There’s something in his soul” (3.1.170-72). At this point, Hamlet has started his drastic decline in his mental stability. When he is called by the Queen for a talk, he over hears something behind the draped curtains and stabs through it, killing Polonius. His reaction is not what one would expect, as he does not feel any remorse. Upon learning that Ophelia has allied herself with Polonius and Claudius, he loses his head and has an incredibly dramatic episode. He is initially honest and open with Ophelia, but his mood quickly changes when he learns they are being spied on. He questioned Ophelia’s motives by asking whether she was honest and fair. He breaks her heart upon the realization she is not on his side. He tells her that he once loved her, then their conversation spirals into nothing more than Hamlet hurling insults at his former love before storming out.

The first major action of the third act is the arranged meeting between Hamlet and Ophelia. During this meeting, Hamlet seems to turn on Ophelia, denying that he ever loved her. This apparent reversal of feelings towards Ophelia may appear as a peripeteia at first, but under closer examination will prove to be a continuation of Hamlet's pretense of madness. The obedient Ophelia has followed her father's injunctions and repelled Hamlets letters and denied him access to her. Polonius is certain that these rebuffs have driven Hamlet mad. His only action is to inform the king and queen, and to let them decide what the next move will be. In Polonius lengthy discussion with the king and queen he explain the situation:
After plotting his revenge, Hamlet attempts to use Ophelia in order to maintain an image of madness. Knowing that Ophelia will report to her father, Hamlet appears to her in a dismal state. He goes to her private room, “with a look so piteous in purport / As if he had been loosed out of hell / To speak of horrors” (2.1.80-82). When Polonius hears this he immediately devises a plan of his own. Polonius is more active than reactive, and his manipulation of Ophelia in order to investigate Hamlet’s madness serves a strategic purpose as he vies for favor with the King and Queen. Since he found out the truth about his father's death, Hamlets only goal has been to get revenge on Claudius, but he feels that he has done nothing. Hamlet judges himself harshly which we see in the first line when he says, “O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I!” (II, ii. I 520). In self-conflict, Hamlet degrades himself for being too hesitant in pursuing his plot of revenge. He feels he isn't the man that he or his father would want him to be, and thus is useless. Shakespeare's primary goal of Hamlet's speech is to reveal Hamlet's true feelings.
