Let’s be honest: - there are parts of the year that make eating healthy and staying green a little more difficult for a lot of families. Fall may bring beautiful weather and explosions of color, but it also brings holidays built around unhealthy eating habits and increased consumerism of mass produced, non-sustainable plastics. This presents a traditional parents’ dilemma: how to keep your kids healthy and mind your carbon footprint while making sure your kids have fun and leave the holiday season with a treasure of cherished memories. Between the candy and the costumes, Halloween can be as much of a trick as a treat. Candy First things first —- all that candy. The ceremonial candy binge can have serious consequences for your kids. There are a couple of ways to head off the upset stomach and dentist bills. Keep healthy Halloween-themed snacks at home, like clementines with jack-o-lantern faces drawn on the peel, pretzel broomsticks and roast pumpkin seeds. Set up a candy budget with your kids, letting them know - when and how many pieces of Halloween candy they can have a day. Arrange a trade-in system, wherein your kids turn in some of their candy for a toy or an outing. Donate your candy at a buyback program to help the troops and get a free toothbrush, or a children’s hospital. …show more content…
Depending on your budget you can give out anything from bubbles, crayons, and temporary tattoos to Lego blind packs or books. Added bonus? Make your home friendly to kids with allergies or dietary restrictions. If you still want to give out candy but don’t like all the traditional options you can go for organic candy, or choose companies that donate to

“Hi kids, I’m giving out candy. Would you like some?” The kids ran over and Mr. Shiftlet opened the trunk of his car.

The fear of the world ending has for a long time, even though the thought isn’t always at the top of our mind nor our biggest problem but it is still a worry that affects many. Whether it's an asteroid hitting earth, a zombie apocalypse, or a killer plague, we often think about what we would do when the world ends. We think about our families and our daily lives taking a turn for the worst. Some people even suffer daily from the fear that the world might end at any second and it's known as the doomsday phobia. Although most of us don’t have the doomsday phobia it is still something that we think about. Most of us think about the end of the world as only a sify movie while there are others preparing for a day that the syfi blockbuster movie
Americans eat entirely too much. And the foods we are consuming are not at all healthy, they contain excessive amounts of salt, sugar, saturated fat, carbohydrates, etc. This over eating is not only a severe problem in the adult population but also in America’s children as well. Results from a study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association showed that 1 to 2 year olds get 30 percent more of the 950 calories they require a day. It has also been found that another contributing factor to most children’s bad eating habits is the fact that they either rarely or never consume vegetables and fruit. Besides the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables children are consuming large amounts of sugar. Wether it be in candy or desserts, soda or sugary fruit juices children are beginning to consume these at very early ages. Results from another study performed by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that infants are drinking soda out of baby bottles as early as 7 months of age. In response to these disturbing facts Parents magazine published the preceding article. It outlines 10 steps that can be taken to
While this era has helped improve several aspects of the world, it has also harmed a significant element in today’s society. The emerging generations are losing their connections with the natural world. A few decades ago, kids would have fun by playing outside with each other. Nowadays, parents buy their children handheld devices to provide entertainment, and fail to see how harmful they can be to a child’s health. Children lose the idea of what it means to have fun, and rely on a material possession for what should be coming from natural means. Statistics have shown the results of a lack of physical activity in a growing child is detrimental to their adult lives. Being active and in touch with nature provides a healthy lifestyle, and should be added to everyone’s routine. Moreover, obesity is a dilemma within the United States, and is a concern for a large portion of the population. More than one-third of adults in the United States are considered obese. The causes for such a statistic can all lead to losing touch with nature. Whether it is processed foods, transportation, or technology, they all stem from the idea of separating from nature. The more progressive the world becomes, the farther the relationship with the environment decays. Creating food through unnatural processes are harmful in the long run. The nature of man is to be outside and live in harmony with the Earth.
Another place to visit is the Lollipop Shop. This store is quite unique because it offers over 400 different types of candy. If you have a sweet tooth, this is the shop for you. The kinds of candy they offer are the old-fashion candy sticks I used to buy for a dime, different flavored hard candies, several types of gummy candies, gum, and of course lollipops. While we were there, my wife and I inquired about services the Lollipop Shop offers, such as birthday party packages available through the shop. The bear parties are very unique, and we hadn’t tried them before. The children are given a choice of one of about twenty different choices of stuffed animals. They then go to stuff the animal and fluff it. They also offer to give their creation, which comes with adoption papers, a name. This party is offered for fourteen dollars per child. With another package, for eighteen dollars per person, in addition to stuffing their animal of choice, they get to decorate a cookie, and they get a slushie.
Ever since the fall, mankind has had a voracious desire for power and influence. People witness this desire within the walls of the Capitol Building when the media exposes backroom deals. It also springs up whenever a politician uses a podium to persuade people that he makes the world work. Politicians possibly rely on persuasion because they crave the power. However, persuasion is a manipulative, unBiblical tactic of forcing others to accept a point of view by all means necessary.
Well, a place where to live is essential for everybody. Today I am going to show you a less expensive, practical and ecofriendly solution for this basic but indispensable necessity.
Throughout the United States, concern of rising health issues is a popular topic. Over a progression of many years, American fast food chains and junk food companies have risen as a common means for food replacing homemade family meals. This quick and easy habit of buying cheaply made and sold foods that lack real nutritional value has been reason for increasing health issues. This habit is seen in children just the same as adults. Children eat the quickest meal with the most sugar and fat (among other unhealthy ingredients). This habit needs to be broken to take better care of the children today. Children are eating snack cakes and other junk foods at school instead of the breakfast/lunch that is offered causing bad habits and a poor diet. The children of America are suffering from the effects of malnutrition and yet, society does not help them to better understand or give higher grade options for them to choose from. Therefore, junk food should not be allowed in schools as it imposes health risks on children, lacks requirements for the nutrition contained in them, and without offering them, children would learn many morals/lessons.
(Gain attention and interest) "Trick or Treat," is common phrase heard during Halloween but for what? Candy and chocolate! That delicious chocolate ranging from Recess Peanut Butter Cups to the ever-famous Hershey chocolate bar.
Laughter echoing, voices chattering, people began to gather on the front porch. Not many people actually talk and visit with each other now a days. In “The Front Porch,” Chester McCovey speaks of how garages have replaced the usage of the front porch. When I first looked at the short story, I didn’t realize how much people really did sit on the front porch all the time. I’m one of the many few people that still gather on the front porch. Today we teenagers might not even talk on the front porch, but on the beds of our trucks instead. My brother, friends, and I used to talk about all our problems or just about life itself. We’d crack up and would have a marvelous time enjoying all the memories we would recall. Actually, the front porch conversations
As Jay Rayner mentions in his article Big Agriculture is the Only Option to Stop the World Going Hungry, “In the early 90s, we spent roughly 20% of our wages on our shopping bill. Today, it’s nearer 10%.”, pointing out that many people now are spending more money on cheap, processed foods, rather than organic, nutritious, unprocessed foods (Rayner 130). My parents abstain from this habit. When they go shopping, they first go to the produce area. Additionally, in lieu of buying frozen, microwaved, or delivered meals, they purchase wholesome, organic ingredients such as eggs, whole wheat breads, meats, cheeses, chocolates and much more, to create their own healthy, flavorful meals.
