The plot of the story revolves around the main character, Beowulf. However, the story doesn’t begin with Beowulf in the land of Geats but with Scyld Scefing in the land of Danes. It then skips ahead to Scefing’s great-grandson Hrothgar. Hrothgar builds Hall Heorot, the largest royal hall in the northern kingdoms. But all the people and celebration and goodness that take place in Hall Heorot attract the attention and of the creature Grendel, who is offended by the all happiness in Hall Heorot. Grendel goes on a rampage killing the guards in Heorot’s throne room. Hrothgar launches several attempts to kill Grendel though none succeed. When they arrive in the land of Danes they are confronted by Hrothgar’s coast guard who tells them that fighting Grendel is like fighting the sea, you can never win. On this advice Beowulf left his sword embedded in a hill on his way to Heorot because as he said “Who ever heard of a man bringing a sword to kill the ocean?” When Grendel comes Beowulf grabs his arm and all the purity within him burns Grendel like a white-hot iron. Beowulf defeats Grendel by ripping his arm off and leaving Grendel to bleed out in his den. Unferth is outraged by the killing of Grendel because Unferth is 100% insane and thought that Grendel was beautiful and that Beowulf was a murderer by killing him. On the night after the celebrations Grendel’s mother comes to Hall Heorot and with Unferth’s help steals Grendel’s arm and body. The eerie music also brings Grendel’s corpse back to life! Beowulf uses the giant sword to decapitate Grendel, killing him once and for all. Beowulf returned to Getaland and began keeping bees for a living. The peace was broken however when the Friesians attacked Geatland, plundering and pillaging and looting and killing their way across the countryside, but when King Hygelac and Beowulf tried to stop them they got back in their ships and sailed back to Friesland. King Hygelac attacked Friesland in revenge, burning entire villages, on their way back to their ships they were ambushed by the Friesians and Beowulf only barely escaped, swimming with Hygelac’s body all the way back to Geatland. The Queen Hygd was in despair, for not only was her husband dead, but their son Hardred, the new king of the Geats, was but an infant and could only say a few words. She opted for Beowulf to be king instead and Beowulf refuses at first, for he is no usurper. But when Hardred is killed by Onella, king of the Swedes, twenty year later Beowulf accepts.
