The chapter juxtaposes the two main characters too provide the reader with character analyses so later they may make judgment on the verdict. The story takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Mark was born. Both of his parents were deaf, but his grandparents were hearing. From birth until first grade, he had perfectly normal hearing so he developed language skills as any normal child would. Mark’s hearing loss was slow, and happened overtime without going noticed. When the reality of his hearing loss struck his family and teachers, questions about his education aroused. His parents and his grandparents were worried that teaching him sign language would draw him from learning spoken language, so it was decided that Mark would be raised as a normal hearing and speaking child.
In the novel The Sisters Brothers, we learn a lot about the two brothers Eli and Charlie. Their violent history as professional killers as a job leads the readers to believe that killing is a part of them, and nothing will ever change that. In my opinion, I think Charlie would have the hardest time adjusting to living in a peaceful environment, and “’removed from all earthly dangers and horror” rather than Eli having a hard time. From what I know by reading the book, I’ve learned that Charlie Sister is more actively violent than his brother Eli. I believe this is true because in the book during the early beginnings of the story line, their commander they’ve been working with for such a long time gave the brothers a task, and Eli was more hesitant “What if Warms not there? ‘He’ll be there’ ‘What if he’s not?’ ‘God damnit he will be’ ” (Dewitt. 10). As this quote proves that Eli Sisters was more hesitant towards their task to kill Hermann makes me believe that deep down inside Eli wants to change the way they live, and Charlie would have more of a hard time. You could tell that Eli was more eager to find Warm, while Eli contemplated the “what ifs” scenarios. The possibility of Charlie being front man instead of Eli can play a part on why Eli is more resistant than Charlie. Also, the personality that Eli portrays is more of a caring, soft, tender heart but those personality traits can be misleading because Eli still participates in the acts of killing. Secondly, I believe Eli and Charlie cannot remove themselves from the life style they grew up in because; they’ve made many enemies along the way. Hypothetically speaking what if they do successfully open up their shop, and one of the customers they get happen to be an enemy, o...
The fundamental characteristic of magical realism is its duality, which enables the reader to experience both the character’s past and the present. In the novel, Monkey Beach, Eden Robinson uses this literary device to address the the trauma and mistreatment of the Haisla community in Canada by unveiling the intimate memories of the protagonist, Lisamarie, and the resulting consequences of this oppression. Monkey Beach illustrates how abuse in the past leads to another form of self-medication in the future - a neverending, vicious cycle for the members of the Haisla community. Many characters in Monkey Beach are scarred from childhood sexual abuse and family neglect, and resort to drug and alcohol abuse as a coping mechanism. These appalling memories are an account of the impact of colonization on the Haisla territory which continues to haunt the Aboriginal community throughout generations.

Several parallels are drawn between the central character and Mustafa Sa'eed. Both speak English and had studied in London. Even though the central character had grown up in the village, his education and time abroad had made him as much an outsider as Sa'eed. As he moves closer to the object of his hatred, he discovers that he is "standing face to face with" himself. Mustafa represents to him all that he despises in himself.
In “My Two Lives” Jhumpa Lahiri talks about her hardship growing up in America coming from two different cultures. At home she spoke Bengali with her parents, ate with her hands. According to Jhumpa’s parents she was not American and would never be. This led her to become ashamed of her background. She felt like she did not have to hide her culture anymore. When Jhumpa got married in Calcutta she invited her American friends that never visited India. Jhumpa thought her friends would judge from being part of the Indian culture and isolate her. However her friends were intrigued by her culture and fascinated. She felt like her culture should not be hidden from her friends anymore, and that coming from an Indian-American culture is unique. Jhumpa believes that her upbringing is the reason why she is still involved with her Bengali culture. Jhumpa says“While I am American by virtue of the fact that I was raised in this country, I am Indian thanks to the efforts of two individuals.” Jhumpa means that she is Indian, because she lived most of her life and was raised here. In the story Lahiri explains that her parents shaped her into the person she is. Growing up coming from two different cultures can be difficult, but it can also be beneficial.
