“Destroy This Mad Brute” by H.R. Hoops is a U.S. Army propaganda poster, printed during World War I. The image reflects the widely-held nationalistic views of many Americans during WWI- a tense time plagued by constant violence.
‘Destroy This Mad Brute’ allegorically represents Germany as a giant, monstrous gorilla, who invades American territory, while presenting America as a frail, helpless dame, unable to escape the hands of the enemy. Formally, classical references become apparent within the rendering of the female form. The woman exudes classical elegance, beauty and sensuousness, evident within the delicate rendering of the flesh and Hellenistic-styled drapery, which contrasts the crude abrasiveness of the gorilla enemy. The gorilla,
or Germany holds in his hand a large club with the engraving ‘kultur’, the German translation of the English word ‘culture’ and steps onto American land. I chose this piece because it clearly and successfully narrates a shift in American social relations, indicative of the persecution German immigrants, as well as German-Americans received from Americans of other European lineage– a change catalyzed solely by the events of WW1. ‘Destroy This Mad Brute’ gave Americans the impression that their nation was being dominated and violated. The poster intended to create incentive within American men to fight in defense of their country and save America from becoming defiled by outside forces, an action which may or may not have been based in the truth, but nevertheless resulted in the widespread persecution of a specific group of people. The portrayal of beloved America in such a vulnerable, helpless state helped to incentivize such an attitude. In conclusion, ‘WW1 and American Art’ successfully communicates an important fact -that World War I severely impacted American artists physically, emotionally, psychologically, and relationally. The inclement nature of this war caused grief, fear, loss and anxiety within many, if not all of its victims, and the artists who produced during this period responded through their art. WW1 and American art successfully documents these responses, which present a chronological timeline of the genesis of an American cultural revolution, catalyzed by World War I.
Kurt Vonnegut, a modern American writer, composed stories about fictional situations that occurred in futuristic versions of today’s world. His stories included violence, both upon oneself and one another, and characters who sought out revenge. In “2BR02B” and “Harrison Bergeron”, Vonnegut conveys physical violence most likely experienced while a prisoner of World War 2, as a way to show how war brings pain and destruction.
The three narratives “Home Soil” by Irene Zabytko, “Song of Napalm” by Bruce Weigl, and “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen all have the same feelings of war and memory, although not everyone experiences the same war. Zabytko, Weigl, and Owen used shifting beats, dramatic descriptions, and intense, painful images, to convince us that the horror of war far outweighs the devoted awareness of those who fantasize war and the memories that support it.

Everyone knows what war is. It's a nation taking all of its men, resources, weapons and most of its money and bearing all malignantly towards another nation. War is about death, destruction, disease, loss, pain, suffering and hate. I often think to myself why grown and intelligent individuals cannot resolve matters any better than to take up arms and crawl around, wrestle and fight like animals. In All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque puts all of these aspects of war into a vivid story which tells the horrors of World War 1 through a soldier's eyes. The idea that he conveys most throughout this book is the idea of destruction, the destruction of bodies, minds and innocence.

Daniel Quinn writes about the horrifying realities of our culture in a book called Ishmael, by stepping outside of the world as we know it and describing what he sees through a talking gorilla. Behind the bars of his cage, he was able to take a look at our culture as an outsider, to see things that we never could. This sagacious, passive, and extremely patient primate wanted to share this knowledge to others so as to stop man from destroying the world. So, he placed an ad in the paper and caught the attention of an eager student, the narrator, who was willing to save the world.
Ridley Scott’s film, “Gladiator,” portrays the sudden fall and heroic rise again, of a great Roman General named Maximus Decimus Meridius. Maximus’ monumental rise, and eventual vengeance, show the viewer, the greatness of this heroic character. A liberal humanistic critique, reveals that the film, has an inherent purpose or meaning, promotes the enhancement of life, and shows that human nature is basically unchanging.

In Art Spiegelman’s comic series, MAUS, each race in the storyline is analogously depicted as a different animal. This essay will explore the various benefits, drawbacks and their counteractions, that are confounded with author’s choice of this illustration. Rise Against’s song Hero of War and Wilfred Owen’s Dulce et Decorum Est can be compared through the problems with war, the unnecessary glorification of war, and breaking from what society thinks of war. Through both works of art there is a general consensus on the terror of war.
Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film Inglourious Bastards entails a Jewish revenge fantasy that is told through a counterfactual history of events in World War II. However, this story follows a completely different plot than what we are currently familiar with. Within these circumstances, audiences now question the very ideas and arguments that are often associated with World War II. We believe that Inglourious Basterds is a Jewish revenge fantasy that forces us to rethink our previous understandings by disrupting the viewers sense of content and nature in the history of World War II. Within this thesis, this paper will cover the Jewish lens vs. American lens, counter-plots with-in the film, ignored social undercurrents, and the idea that nobody wins in war. These ideas all correlate with how we view World War II history and how Inglourious Basterds muddles our previous thoughts on how these events occurred.
Over the course of history, violence amongst men has shaped the world in which we live through wars, political protests, or social conflicts. Sadly, enough, this is a factor of human nature which resides in all individuals and cannot be controlled or avoided. Not only have these events of man’s inhumanity been documented, but they have also become the underlying theme for many well known works of literature.
