Black Radishes is a book about a boy named Gustave, his family, and friends. Gustave lived in Paris,France with his cousin Jean-Paul and their friend Marcel they were best friends. When Gustaves family found out the Nazis were going to invade Paris they decided they wanted to move to Saint Georges in the countryside. Gustave didn't want to go without his family but they had to leave before the Nazis came. Gustave tried to get Jean-Paul and Marcels family to go but they just didn't want to go they thought it would be fine. When the Nazis invaded France there was an occupilated and an unoccupied zone thankfully Gustave and his parents were in the unoccupied zone but with the rest of their family in Paris they were worried. When Fall started Gustave started school he was worried kids would find out he was Jewish and he wouldn't have friends, Gustave always missed playing with Jean-Paul and Marcel. At school Gustave made a friend, her name was Nicole there family helped people get across from the occuplated zone to the unoccupied zone they said they would help Gustaves family get their Aunt and Cousins over. When the day came that Gustave and his father were going to pick up his family they were very nervous, if they got caught sneaking people into the other side they could get killed. They got through the bridge and headed to the farm where they were staying when they got there they said hello and hugged. But then they had to put them in the back of the truck and make sure they were hidden out of site and very quiet. As they were approaching the bridge they were noticing something different, they were doing more thou searches with the vehicles. Gustave's father was very nervous that they were going to get caught but lucky when they got to the truck they didn't even search it and let them by. When they got to the house and knew they were safe the hole family hughes and ate and talked about what had happened throughout the year. Moché the Beadle practices the cabbala, with, “dreaming eyes” (13), living his life by his own terms. His eyes are his distinguishing factor; they show his hope for the future, his love of life, and his own freedom. Moché’s eyes seperate him from the rest of the town, elevating him to a model of self-esteem, and a confident, independent person. However, the German cruelty to the foreign Jews changes Moché; “There was no longer any joy in his eyes” (17). By subjecting him to horror and fear, they removed the parts of Moché that made him Moché. When Moché lost his dignity, he lost himself. The difficulty in getting to America is the first delema for immigrants. One of the main characters, George Kracha, shows the true difficulty traveling to America. He had to borrow money to even get on the boat and left his wife behind. He made a big mistake falling for another man's wife while traveling to NY and spent his money on her birthday thst was suppose to be for a bus ticket toWhite Haven. Eventually, George's wife Elena arrives. The hope to come to America for these immigrants was based on conditions back in Hungary. THere is no true immage of this from George, but Elena is a sign of those conditions. Losing a son before arrival, Elena comes to America with that burden and also with goiter. SHe is never happy, even after the birth of her three children. In America, lives alter for George as he movesto Braddock, leaving the railroad to join working in the mills with his brother-in-law, Andrej. Most of the men worked at the steel mill where conditions were hard. THere is pollution filling the air and people living in small rooms because rent was too expensive for the workers. Some women, like Dorta, would rent rooms to people to gain extra money.
The first thing that catches your attention is the setting of the neighborhood and how grayish and dull it appears. Throughout the film the background setting continues with this grayish and dull point of view about this neighborhood but gave a naturalistic light. The film was set to go against the monochromatic dullness of post-war Paris. In addition, the setting is very large compared to the characters throughout this storyline. The setting overwhelm the characters in various scenes throughout the film. As a result of the directors using this technique the grayish dull and big setting it disconnects the viewers from the city so we can focus more on the message within the film. Although there are several themes, the major theme is isolation. Throughout the book, Jacob Freisten is isolated from his parents, his sister, and the other students at his school. He is not close to anyone, and because of that, his life is horrible. He does not even sleep upstairs with the rest of his family; he sleeps on a cot in the dingy basement of their house.
The story begin with Benjamin who is mentally challenge tells the first section of the story; this is one of the most difficult chapters of the book that is very difficult to comprehend for the simple fact that Benjamin has no motion of time. Therefore he constantly goes back in forth with the present and past. In order to fully understand the chapter, you must slowly comprehend when he is speaking of the past and when he is speaking in the present. All his memories have to do with Caddy. She was the one who gave him order. His life was based around Caddy because she was the mother figure in his life. She was the one that gave Benjamin the love he needed. There was a point in the novel were Luster was taking Benjamin and he started to cry hysterically because Luster took him on an unfamiliar route; Jason found out he hit Luster and told him to never do that again or he’ll kill him because Benjamin lost the order he lived with. Without the familiarity of his surroundings there would not be any meaning to his life. The only thing he has left in his life is the memories he had with his sister. When Caddy ran away Benjamin lost the order in his life and the loved he needed.
In that room, they see a book with their mother’s handwriting and learn about how their mother and father were the islands leaders once but were overthrown by Ishmael to avoid conflict. The Baudleriars go back to the other side and see everybody is there. After a long argument, Ishmael shoots count Olaf with the harpoon gun in his stomach shattering the Medusiod Mycelium and spreading out. After rereading the book, the Baudelaire’s understand that they their parents put horseradish into the apples of the apple tree. So they take the apples for the others and eat one themselves. As they reach the other end, they see that the islanders are leaving and trying to get to a horse radish factory. Subsequently, Kit has a baby but dies due to the Medusiod mycelium. After that the Baudleriars take great care of it by nursing and feeding it. Lastly, they decide to go back to the mainland which is not known if they survive the trip back home or not. In the end Bruno goes to meet Shmuelat he fence. It was raining and storming that day. When he got to the meeting spot, Shmuel gave Bruno top and bottom of pajamas and cap. Bruno put them on and left his other clothes at the fence then, Shmuel pulled the fence up so Bruno could crawl under. When he got across they both hugged, then started looking for Shmuel's papa. They looked for about a hour and a-half, and Bruno started to not like it on the other side of the fence. So Bruno told Shmuel he was sorry they could not find his papa and it was time for him to go. Right then the soldiers whistle blew and all the prisoners were crowded in a group. Bruno was worried so he asked Shmuel what was happening. Shmuel it was probably the marchers. Then they were forced into a room where no rain could hit them. Bruno held Shmuels had tight and would not let go. Then the room went dark and everything went silent. Mother and Gretel moved back to Berlin. Gretel sat in her room and cried about Bruno. Father at the outwith until soldiers came and he had to go with them.
