Gun Violence Research Paper

Why does the United States of America have the most deaths by a gun in the whole world? To understand this, we need to find out that with all the recent mass shootings going on in this country, why has there not been a law passed to eradicate or diminish the use of these guns. In addition to this, we need to find out the biggest cause of all of this gun violence. Moreover, what will I do to help stop gun violence. With this is mind, I believe the main reason for so many gun deaths in the United States is caused by the conservatism of the NRA (National Rifle Association) siding with Republicans mainly politicians to have their back not to pass gun laws.

According to George Bernard Shaw, “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot

change their minds cannot change anything.” I used this quote because I wanted to talk about the NRA and how they are conservative going way back to 1977. In fact, in ‘77 a revolt in the organization changed everything because as crime rose in the 60’s and 70’s it called for additional gun control. They were afraid that the government would take everyone’s guns and that would make them very upset. Therefore, every time there is a bill proposing new ideas on gun control they get their people and other adversaries who support gun control to stop anything like that from happening. But you see you not only have the people from the NRA and opponents of gun control you also have the Republicans who fear that if the NRA gives them a bad grade many of them will lose their job.
According to the NY Times, “In the United States, the death rate from gun homicides is about 31 per million people — the equivalent of 27 people shot dead every day of the year.” So what causes this outrage in gun violence? Well, one reason is the pop culture influence such as violent video games, music, and violent movies, which all leads back to how the child was raised. In this modern society, parents are working all the time and therefore, the child does not have the proper teaching, learning, or connection to love. If parents do not show children love and that they are cherished, how can that child grow up and show love to any other person? When you do not care if the person in front of you, beside you, and in the back of you lives or dies, it is pretty easy to pull a trigger.
With that being the case the question still remains what will I as a student do to “contribute to solving the global issue” of gun violence? Well with so much conservative power in politics, there might not be much I can do, but you can never go wrong with communicating this important issue to the everyday person through various means of outreach. Talking to politicians in my local community to help my outreach, social media, handing out fact sheets in the local community on the dangers of guns, and billboards are all great ways for me to get the word out. First, I will have to fundraise and get the money needed to be able to put information up on billboards or even be able to hand out facts sheets — ink and paper. Second, using the greatest gift of this generation — social media, which in my opinion will be the best way to get the word out. Then once I do all of that I will make it my duty to sit down and talk to local politicians on ways to prevent gun violence in the community. Starting small leads to bigger and better things!
