Gun control has been a widely controversial topic across the United States. There are many people around the country hold the opinion that perhaps we should ban all guns to make society a safer place. However, I hold a different opinion. My opinion on the topic of gun control is that we should not ban guns, but instead, everyone should be allowed to have one. Allowing the people of the United Sates to carry guns is not only a constitutional right, but it is also a way for people to defend themselves, and help reduce crime in major cities. In the constitution, the first ten amendments are about the rights of the people of The United States, or as it’s more famously known as The Bill of Rights. We all know how we have the right of free speech, the right to practice whichever religion we choose, etc. and these rights are never given scrutiny over their wording or over their significance. However, unlike most of these rights, the right to bear arms has come under more scrutiny and criticism than all of the other rights in The Bill of Rights. Why has this become such a hot topic now? I don’t think people having gunfights over parking spaces will become the norm just because more guns allowed on the street (Wright 3-4). People are not irresponsible and they don’t suddenly become a murder just because s/he has access to a firearm (Wright 4). In fact, there are numerous cases of people using firearms for effective self-defence every day (Wright 4), “Americans generally use guns defensively between 830,000 and 2.45 million times a year” (Burrus 3).
