the book The Art of Living by Sharon Lebell regarding with happiness and freedom with Epictetus, a Greek philosopher, fundamental ideas which are learn what you can and can’t control, focus on what you can control, and let go of what you can’t control these ideas relate to the main character, Phil Connors when he deals with trying to balance his self-control within the environment trying to adjust to reliving the same day over and over again, in order to obtain the sense of happiness and freedom he is striving for which Epictetus believes is a principle one may or may not be able to control. Throughout the movie as Phil relives the same day over and over, he starts to understand what he can and cannot control. After quickly trying to figure out his situation, his first thought was that he was psychotic. Phil then starts to have power, when he knows the events and information about the people he encounters with everyday. He starts to learn that his behavior and actions have no persisting consequences for himself. Phil begins to indulge in his transgressions by embezzling money, seducing money, driving under the influence, and even trying to run from the police. Although, at first he understands that he can and cannot control his own behavior and actions, but cannot control what other do and say. He is the only one who is aware of the recurrence because everyone seems to be reliving Groundhog Day for the very first time. However, if he is capable of changing something from the previous day, then that is the only way it can affect the people’s reaction or response. Epictetus claims that “trying to control or to change what we can’t only results in torment” (Lebell 3). This is indicating when Phil starts to get frustrated because he is continuously not getting his way since he thinks he can control anything under his own power. Epictetus further explains that if you do try to go beyond your control you will become a frustrated, anxious person which is exactly what happens to Phil. Furthermore, after countless attempts to make Rita fall in love with me, it results in complete failure. He cannot control how Rita feels about him and cannot make her feel the same way because he cannot control emotions. Phil then starts to feel frustrated, tired and dreads his own existence by starting the day smashing his alarm clock. All he wants to do is break the cycle that he is trapped in. Another idea that Phil has was he wanted to try to attempt to kidnap the famous groundhog to see if that would change anything. After the police were chasing after him, Phil then drives the truck that he stole off a cliff into the quarry leading himself and the groundhog to die in an explosion. However, that still doesn’t change anything. He then tries to kill himself several more times after the first was unsuccessful. He tries to electrocute himself with a toaster, runs in front of truck, and even tries to jump off a building. After all these attempted suicides Phil finds himself still repeating the same day. After he attempts to kill himself, he still wakes up to I Got You Babe again reliving the same day. Phil realizes that death would not break the cycle, he decides to change his attitude and character by starting to be more genuine toward others. With this, Epictetus infers that “we must remember that those things are externals and are therefore not our concern” (Lebell 3). This idea connects with how Phil lets go of what he can and cannot control throughout the movie and moves on. Later, he learns that he can influence people’s interactions and responses. Phil attempts to seduce Rita by learning as much as he can about her. He starts by asking what she looks for in a man. She responds with “someone who is humble, kind, generous, courageous, and sensitive; someone who likes children; someone who loves his mother and plays a musical instrument” (Groundhog...) Also he picks up on that her favorite ice cream is rocky road, that she likes French poetry and sweet vermouth. Also he learns that she doesn’t like white chocolate. He pretends to share her likes and dislikes in effort to get her to like or be impressed by him. This also is unsuccessful consistently throughout the movie. Rita ends up slapping him before the night is over, every night. Yet, he is able to patronize her in a more genuine way after each occurrence. He even tells Rita about the situation he is in and tries to convince her of the truth by telling her what will happen next in the moment. He is aware of the lives of the people in Punxsutawney, including Rita herself. He starts to reach out to Rita and her advice to him benefits him. She tells him to find a goal in his unbreakable cycle; to be a supporter of others. Though he cannot convey others to satisfy his needs, he can still accomplish self-improvement by teaching himself. Phil begins to do more heroic services throughout his day. For example, he saves a man from choking and saves a little boy from falling out of a tree. After repeatedly walking by the old homeless guy several times before he decided to stop and help him out, Phil encountered the death of this man and it deeply affected him. At first, he cannot accept the man’s death and continues to be good to him from days to come. He takes him out to dinner, trying to keep him alive in any way possible but remains unsuccessful. When he demands to see the man’s medical chart in the hospital, the nurse tells him “sometimes people just die” (Groundhog...) Phil replies with “not today” (Groundhog...) but still does not attempt to prevent it. He realizes that he can try and help him stay alive but in the end he really cannot control death because eventually everyone dies at some point in time. He starts to develop skills not for himself but for his peers. He learns how to make ice sculptures and to play the piano for enjoyment for others and not just for himself. These last actions transformed Phil into a much more caring and sincere person deep inside which shows him as a better person for himself and his community. To support Phil’s growth, Epictetus claims that “we always have a choice about the contents and character of our inner lives” (Lebell 3). This statement relates to the movie Groundhog Day where the main character Phil Connors made himself into a better character because he learns to improve his character day after day. Eventually, Phil finds that freedom and happiness lies inside himself.
He sees the glass half full and identifies it as a form of freedom. Phil makes the best out of his situation and learns to finally accept it. Phil is definitely a different person than he was on February 1st. He learns what he can and cannot control, to let go of the things he cannot control and to focus on what he can control. Which is what Epictetus thinks being most important about the meaning of the control and relates to Phil’s character. The character and attitude changed continuously throughout the movie, which made him into the person he was at the end. Freedom was gained through his choices and actions and how happiness was through his change of character, which is what he wanted all

Self-control can be defined as the ability to control oneself, in particular one’s emotions or desires, especially in difficult situations. Comparatively, self-image is the idea one has of one’s abilities, appearance or personality. Often self-image and self-control are thought of as separate entities, but in the case of the tragic play “Oedipus Rex,” Sophocles demonstrates the connection between the two through the tragic events that occur. Integrated in the plot is the growth of the character of Oedipus, for it is he whom indices the investigation to stop the current plague in his kingdom of Thebes, his personal rashness and ignorance of the past come back to haunt him. Oedipus’ incautiousness when discovering the true state of Thebes is
Imagine waking up on a hospital bed, surrounded by wires attached to your body. You get up, you wander around, and you notice that the world around you is empty. That is exactly what happens to Jim in the powerful and realistic film 28 Days Later, starring Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris. The film features the effects of a deadly infection outbreak called rage, but also explores how the infection represents “today’s increasing incidences of road rage, air rage, etc.” and how we are no different than the zombies portrayed in the movie (Allen). Incorporating the film 28 Days Later into the English 10 curriculum would benefit students in understanding the similarities between the time period in the movie and in reality, as well as the correlation between themes in 28 Days Later and other works of literature in the curriculum, and how the film relates to many students.
