The presence of grief in Kitchen By Banana Yoshimoto is quite elaborate and is present throughout the entire book. When Mikage’s grandmother died she felt extreme grief, that was her last living family member and now Mikage is all alone. Throughout this book, we see how Yuichi and Mikage go through grief their own ways and how they helped each other. A big way they process their grief is with food. Mikage was an astonishing cook. Mikage lost her grandmother in the beginning of the book. Mikage and Yuichi met when Yuichi showed up at Mikage’s house after the loss of her grandmother to invite her over so that she was no longer alone. Mikage began living with Yuichi and his mother Eriko. Yuichi mother/father Eriko died in the second half of the book. Eriko was a transgender women and had a “stalker” who killed her. She was stabbed at her club. Both of these characters processed the death of their loved ones in many different ways. however , the one thing that brought them together was the …show more content…

She realized she was alone, she had no one, everyone else in her family was dead. After she was taken in by Yuichi and Eriko she began cooking for them. She used the cooking as a distraction. It wasn't until she returned to her old home when she intended on moving in with Yuichi that everything hit her. She missed her grandmother. Her grandmother’s favorite place was the kitchen, which is why Mikage was so enticed by the kitchen and why she spent so much time in there. Before Mikage began cooking and spending most of her time in the kitchen she was extremely depressed and felt most alone. However, once she began cooking and being in the kitchen, herr mind became clouded with the different dishes she was wanting to try and make. Mikage goes and works for a chef where she begins to find the magic in cooking. By living with Yuichi, Mikage begins to feel the family dynamic again and becomes more open with Yuichi and
