The presence of grief in Kitchen By Banana Yoshimoto is quite elaborate and is present throughout the entire book. When Mikage’s grandmother died she felt extreme grief, that was her last living family member and now Mikage is all alone. Throughout this book, we see how Yuichi and Mikage go through grief their own ways and how they helped each other. A big way they process their grief is with food. Mikage was an astonishing cook. Mikage lost her grandmother in the beginning of the book. Mikage and Yuichi met when Yuichi showed up at Mikage’s house after the loss of her grandmother to invite her over so that she was no longer alone. Mikage began living with Yuichi and his mother Eriko. Yuichi mother/father Eriko died in the second half of the book. Eriko was a transgender women and had a “stalker” who killed her. She was stabbed at her club. Both of these characters processed the death of their loved ones in many different ways. however , the one thing that brought them together was the …show more content…
She realized she was alone, she had no one, everyone else in her family was dead. After she was taken in by Yuichi and Eriko she began cooking for them. She used the cooking as a distraction. It wasn't until she returned to her old home when she intended on moving in with Yuichi that everything hit her. She missed her grandmother. Her grandmother’s favorite place was the kitchen, which is why Mikage was so enticed by the kitchen and why she spent so much time in there. Before Mikage began cooking and spending most of her time in the kitchen she was extremely depressed and felt most alone. However, once she began cooking and being in the kitchen, herr mind became clouded with the different dishes she was wanting to try and make. When they found the body, they automatically started looking for clues as to why the person was killed. They wanted to find anything that looked suspicious so that they could search for the killer. When they were looking for clues as to who the killer was, the killer caught on to them. The killer realized that he was being followed up on, and he made it his obligation to get to the main characters instead. The killer got a hold of one of the main characters in the woods, where he killed his second victim. The meal, and more specifically the concept of the family meal, has traditional connotations of comfort and togetherness. As shown in three of Faulkner’s short stories in “The Country”, disruptions in the life of the family are often reinforced in the plot of the story by disruptions in the meal.

Throughout the book, we go through several examples of how food can have an influence on people and how they are affected. The emotions range from joy to grief and sadness. We see this happen with Tita and Pedro and their communication through food and how their connection is strengthened through cooking and food. Inevitably, her escape was against her father’s wish as he believed that she would not be capable of successfully making through this trip by herself. However, she shows autonomy after being left alone by a guardian set up by her father, half way through the journey, she was able to, she was able to fix this situation on her own. She wasn't sure why she had done it, but the fact was, she had and she did not want to get caught. There was no way she could tell anyone, not even her best friend. What was she supposed to do? Go to the police? Tell them that it was an "accident"? She wasn't sure how you "accidentally" stabbed someone 6 times in the back.
