Beowulf has been by many as one of the most important written works in the english language. It has been adapted into multitudes of different media from its first found written manuscript that is estimated to have been written in the 11th century, to its multiple movie adaptations including: Beowulf(2007), Beowulf & Grendel (2005) and Beowulf (1999). The epic poem has also been recreated into theatrical plays, TV shows (Beowulf: Return to the Sheildlands created in 2016) and even animated shows/shorts. Beowulf was an Anglo-Saxon epic poem. The creation date is unknown and will likely never be confirmed. It was most likely passed verbally between peoples until its manuscript in the 11th century. This is a classic tale about good and evil and how good will prevail and triumph evil. The story is split into three separate acts that each tell a different story of Beowulf. The tale tells of beowulf, who is a fierce warrior, Geatish prince, who bravely aides his neighboring villages when he hears of their struggles with the evil Grendel. He succeeds in aiding them and kills grendel. There is much rejoice over the victory. Grendel’s Mother takes Revenge for the death of her child and destroys the King’s Hall. Beowulf then seeks and kills Grendel’s mother in her underwater lair. This is just some of the epic poem that discusses Beowulf’s life and continues to depict his heroic deeds until his death near the end of the poem. The epic poem is constantly referring to god and Beowulf is constantly saying that god is his protector and quotes such as “the fight would have ended straight away if god had not guarded me” helps to strengthen the christian beliefs that are emphasised within the story. However there is a common theme and belief that they think god’s protection must be earned and it even states that a warrior will be granted god’s protection after he is first true to his values, honesty, courageous, show pride for god and for his people and humility.
