Greed is the downfall to many. It is the ambitious qualities that corrupts and molds the selfish minds of people who will only live to see themselves fail in the end. In my time, I have come to believe that greed has no presence in my life. I have always been happy with what I have, this sense of fulfilment which some people lack, allows me to accept what I was given to overthrow the selfish desires of greed. I find that I have never been driven by my ambitions so far so as to simply have more than others and to do so by impractical and unjust means. I believe that people allow themselves to be overcome with greed because of the personal fulfilment and power that comes with it. The greed for more, especially more than others is something that people exhibit in response to wanting to be on top and or having the best things. Many years ago me and my brother were opening up presents as kids on Christmas. Unfortunately for him he did not get what he wanted, but I had received a new power rangers action figure. A couple of days later to my shock it was missing. Apparently my brother had taken it, unsatisfied with what he was given. He wanted what I had because he felt he simply deserved more than what he already had and in return had to pay the price. In "Macbeth" as Macbeth and Banquo meet the three witches they are given prophecies which tell of a great future for Macbeth. He then tells the witches, "Stay, you imperfect speakers, tell me more." Macbeth is intrigued instantly by what the witches professed and is hungry for more. He knows where he stand but loves the idea that he is being promised more. In our corrupt world greed has taken its place high among our political leaders. Bo Xilai a Chinese politician was recently sentenc... ... middle of paper ... ... act in ways we normally would not. It is then in these action were we fail to stop ourselves to realise the trouble that are to come. I believe that people need to realise that it is not always about who has more or who has the better thing. It is about accepting what you are given by ignoring your wants and accepting your needs. Greed is not something that controls my life. When the desire for more sets in I am usually able to cope with what I have. I find that when greed begins to affect people, they lose themselves in the joy and power that comes with and allow themselves to commit horrendous acts to achieve this power. This usually then leads to consequences that do not seem to be worth the trouble. I believe that greed is something that poisons our minds and leads us to believe that spoils are worth the trouble that follows, but this is hardly ever the case.
Why is that money and power can changes an individual’s personality? Well, when some humans see something desirable and valuable that doesn’t belong to them, they will go to a great extent to have it. Whether, that is stealing, lying or even killing loved ones. This is simply described as greed. Greed and ambition is a common theme in both Shakespeare’s tragic play, Macbeth and the movie “A Simple Plan”. They both share the concept of wanting something and committing crime after crime to achieve it. Similarly, the main characters in both stories become greedy after finding something valuable and their spouse encourages them further. Once in control, the main characters are willing to do anything to keep possession, even if it means to kill love ones.
From the beginning of time, greed and money has motivated man above all else. It seems
The choices people make lead them to where they end up, which may be interpreted as the opposite of fate. However, when some people believe something is meant to be, they are determined not to stray from where they think they should end up, even if it means throwing away their principles and values in the process. Through Shakespeare's Tragedy of Macbeth, Macbeth’s original character and values are destroyed because of the influence from the witches' prophecies, Lady Macbeth's greed, and his own hidden ambition.
...n trait because it is an influential factor that causes humans to make unwise decisions in order to satisfy their beneficial needs. Voltaire’s attitude towards greed is that everyone has it within themselves to be selfish, regardless of what condition and social class the person may be in. People don’t always realize how detrimental the effects of greed can turn out until something tragic occurs in their lives. People can have greed for materials, for power, or for money. In the long run, all types of greed can lead to a corrupt society because people may end up fighting one another just to get what they want, or make sacrifices that can be harmful to not only themselves, but for others as well. If greediness in people was a puzzle, it will forever remain incomplete until the missing piece of contentment is found through whatever it is they have been longing to have.
“Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction.” -Erich Fromm
Many people have different definitions of the two words, “greed” and “ambition”; some may say they are negative traits and some may say they are positive traits. Ambition is the burning desire and urge to aspire to complete your goals or succeed. Ambition can be a great thing if it is used to better a situation, but sometimes it is used negatively. Another word that can be a positive force or a negative force to acquire something is greed. Greed is something almost everyone has. It is the selfish desire to acquire more than one needs. Greed can also be a positive thing, but normally it is a defective trait, that brings out the worst in people. It results in the need for more and it increases, causing the person to never be satisfied. There
The love of material things is considered the root of all evil. Money, as well as desire for fame and power, are powerful motivators that drive people through certain shortcuts called decisions. Every day, people drive through this shortcuts, big and small.
Greed and incentives are two terms that each play a role in the other. Incentives are sometimes rewarding and sometimes punishing. Greed is intense and selfish, but is it really bad? By looking at it from an economical perspective, one can see how forms of greed and incentives play a crucial role in the free market society.
The play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare illustrates how greed for power and wealth can result in the destruction of oneself as well as others. The play's central character, Macbeth is not happy as a high-ranking thane - leading him to assassinate Duncan to become King, while unknowingly dooming himself. Throughout the play many examples are evident of Macbeth's unquenchable thirst for power.
A quote that demonstrates greed is, “It was like hunger, what she felt. It was the same as when her hand sometimes seemed to reach out by itself to grab a piece of food. It was too strong to resist.” (43). Lina knows she’s being greedy, but she can’t help herself.
The completely greed-based society is just but an orgy of sin. Extreme and radical changes must be made for one to be able to avoid evil. The human mind is very powerful and is able to distinguish what is good and bad. This is associated with the freedom to choose between what right and what is wrong. One can only control external if evil if he or she can defeat the evil within him or her. Confession is the best way to do away with the internal evil.
Since time immemorial, people have been trying to institutionalize moral values. love kindness, patience, contentment are just a few out of the plethora of positive traits. However, mankind being imperfect beings can never achieve perfection. Of all the vices that human possess, greed could be said to be the most influential. It is the distinct opposite of contentment and the very trait that has cause the fall of many countries. Perhaps most disturbing is that fact that greed has also torn apart countless families who would have otherwise been living in happiness. Indeed, one may say that greed is worthy to be one of the greatest sins. Yet there are those who proclaim that greed is necessary for mankind to evolve and rise above themselves. Such is the paradox of our time.
Greed is a natural consequence of trying to get the most for the least. From the beginning, humans have been greedy to the point where now it is part of being human to be greedy. There is no person on Earth that has never been greedy and there never will be. The first person who walks this planet without having ever been greedy will no longer be human. Greed is valuable to self, to society, and to our species. Humans act like a swarm, when everyone follows their own personal interests; we appear to be following an organized pattern. From chaos a perfect order is born. An order governed solely by greed.
Greed is so powerful in a person that it has the ability to destroy them, their friends, and family relationships. I have lived in the poorest country my first nine years, so when I was adopted, my mom gave me everything I ever wanted, everything I ever needed. However, using myself as an example, I was so mesmerized of the materialistic things that were available, that I stole. I took something that was not mine because I felt greedy. I felt like I needed that object for whatever reason. My mom tore my butt when I got home and I never thought of steeling because of my own selfish need of wanting. Not to mention how greed made me afraid. It made me afraid because I knew what I did was wrong. People are constantly being bombarded with images of things that we believe will make us happy and the selfish thoughts of greed makes us wanting more. For example, the iPhone 6 Plus came out September of 2015, now there is iPhone 7 which has new camera zoom, ear pods, and better quality. However, the week before it was released, everyone talked about wanting it because it’s the new “cool” thing. However, what people fail to understand is that the reason they want
Although with this said most people don’t know how to set limits and end up going beyond those boundaries that would allow greed to benefit America as just motivation. Beyond those boundaries people succumb to greed and become consumed with an uncontrollable drive for personal gain therefore succumbing to greed as a form of obsession for whatever they’re goal may be. The pursuit of happiness is also something that people find to be good whether the amount of time that is put into it takes up a little or most of their time. This is actually a rather good way for a person to spend an excessive amount of their time, pursuing their dreams and building up their lives for example, going to college, being employed by their dream job, and finding their significant other. Even though most people see no wrong in the pursuit of happiness its when greed is not kept in check that it becomes an issue for example, when people believe their happiness is above everyone else 's and even go to the length of sabotage and mischief to see the outcome they desire therefore engaging in less ethical behavior. It’s when a person intentionally interferes with another person’s happiness that greed has become a problem for example, when a relationship is sabotaged or when a resume is tampered with in
