Great Gatsby 3
Write an essay about the character and function of Nick Carraway.
Despite the title, Nick Carraway is the first character we meet, and
appropriately his role in The Great Gatsby is crucial; without him the
story would lack balance and insight. The first chapter is primarily
dedicated in establishing his personality and position in the book, then
moving on to Tom and Daisy. Nick is our‘ guide, path finder’
in The Great Gatsby; he relates the story as he has seen it and from what
others have told him. He strives at all times to be objective, his
comments are balanced, as he says just in the first page of the
book–‘ I’m inclined to reserve all judgements’.
His objectivity is reinforced throughout to us by his scorn of
Gatsby– he thoroughly disapproves of him– he‘
represented everything for which I have unaffected scorn’. Yet
there is something–‘ some heightened sensitivity to the
promises of life’,‘ an extraordinary gift for hope’
that is attractive to Nick, and requires him to make several attempts at
describing it. He registers contempt for much of what Gatsby stands
for– the falseness, the criminality, but still he likes him. His
ability to laugh at Gatsby and his false airs‘ What was that? . . .
The picture of Oxford?’ shows he’s neither charmed nor wholly
disgusted by Gatsby. Nick sees him as the best of a‘ rotten
crowd’, his approval is always relative– compared to Tom and
Daisy his dream like innocence is attractive, though twisted into an
impossible goal and only nearly achieved by criminality. But compared to
Tom’s ruthless attitude to Myrtle and Wilson, Daisy’s
careless abandonment of Gatsby and ultimately their complete inability to
see their wrong–‘ if you think I didn’t have my share
of suffering . . . I sat down and cried like a baby’– put
Gatsby in a much fairer light. As Nick says, Gatsby was‘ worth the
whole damn bunch put together’.
His amusingly contemptuous remarks show his sense of humour, and although
he is straight-laced, we are not bored by him. We are told of his
age– thirty, which makes us take his opinions seriously, as he is
not some immature unworldly man.
Nick is introduced directly, but Gatsby remains a distant character for a
good while. The establishment of Nick’s reflective, tolerant
personality is essential, as are his limitations, so we don’t just
dismiss him as Fitzgerald’s mouthpiece. The fact that he
disapproves of Gatsby so early on, helps us to go along with his
judgements when he tells us of Gatsby and unfolds the story.
Our first mysterious glimpse of Gatsby prepares us for much of what is to
Jay Gatsby is the main character in The Great Gatsby. He is the mysterious character that the story revolves around. Nick is his neighbor that gets invited to Gatsby’s party that set in on Gatsby being a mysterious person that has so many people talking about him and talking about different stories about Gatsby that unravel how big of a mystery Gatsby is. In The Great Gatsby, “Gatsby’s notoriety, spread about by the hundreds who had accepted his hospitality and so become authorities on his past, had increased all summer until he fell just short of being news” (Fitzgerald 105). In chapter six, the real truth is revealed about the great Gatsby. The stories of the mysterious Gatsby in the parties were not true. The stories about Gatsby also went around New York, which made Nick ask Gatsby about his past ("The Great Gatsby," Fitzgerald). Nick also asked about Gatsby’s past hoping Nick would finally hear the truth. According to The Great Gatsby, “This was the night, Carraway says, that Gatsby told him the story (its factual details have been told earlier in the novel) of his early life. The purpose of the telling here is not to reveal facts but to try to understand the character of Gatsby’s passion. The final understanding is reserved for one of those precisely right uttera...
The car pulled up to Wilson’s garage. Instantly, anger filled my body. Myrtle should be alive. Myrtle should be here. But instead, that man- this man- let her go and get herself killed. I knew who it was. Gatsby. He was one with the yellow car. He was the one driving. God knows, he wouldn’t let Daisy drive.
this flashback, Jordan explains to Nick how she first met Gatsby. She explains to Nick
When you take them together, however, you discover the complicated and unique individual that is Jay Gatsby. One of the traits of Gatsby that makes him truly great is his remarkable capacity for hope. He has faith that what he desires will come to him if he works hard enough. He does not comprehend the cruelty and danger that is the rest of the world. Gatsby, while a man of questionable morals, is as wide-eyed and innocent as a small child in his views of the world.
the 1920s as we can see with Gatsby's five cars, one of which he gives
At this point in time, scientists and doctors have yet to discover the specific causes for breast cancer. However, what is known are the different risk factors that may trigger or put women more at danger of acquiring this disease. Aged women who have experienced menopause are more vulnerable at containing this disease. Women are also more at risk if breast cancer is common within their family because it is hereditary. In addition, smoking and drinking are other factors that can put women at risk as well (Stephan, 2010). Obesity in particular is a huge risk factor. Women who are overweight, especially those who have a thicker upper body, are more likely to develop malignant cancers in the breast than a healthy woman (Vona-Davis and Rose, 2009).
Breast Cancer is a disease that can sometime lead to ovarian cancer and has caused a lot of women’s death. “About five to ten percent of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary, meaning that they result from gene defects called mutations inherited from a parent”. Related Risks early menstruation, oral contraceptives and child bearing 20 percent. (1)An environmental risk is that toxins can damage breast DNA. Over time damaged DNA can lead to cancer. Your risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. “1 of 8 breast cancer are found when women are younger than 45. 2 of 3 breast cancer are found in women age 55 years or older 75 percent greater chance”.(1) Breast Cancer can lead Peutz Jeghers syndrome the effects of Peutz Jeghgers is spots on your lips and in their mouths. Women with no children or who had a child after age 30 have slightly higher breast cancer risk. “Screening for breast cancer is early diagnosis increases chance of survival and annual mammogram after age 40”. Women who took Diethylstilbestrol while pregnant could have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer. Birth control peals also cause higher risks 40 to 50 percent for breast cancer risk calms down after they have stopped taking them.(1) Using combined hormone therapy after menopause increase the risk of getting breast cancer , it also increase women chances of dying from it. If you are over weight or obese after menopause greatly increase breast cancer risk 20 percent. Drinking alcohol can cause a major effect for you to start developing breast cancer the risk increase the more you drink. Tobacco smoke, Night work, Antiperspirants, Bras and Induced abortion. Breast cancer takes a lot of toll on women and men of all races and...
There is not one factor that is known to cause breast cancer solely, but there are a combination of factors that all work together in allowing these cancer cells to reproduce and invade. Gender is a big factor in breast cancer as the majority of people who get breast cancer are women. Men are capable of getting breast cancer but the likeliness of men getting breast cancer is very min...
A very common fate of orphans was adoption. They were often taken in by relatives or neighbors, and even, on occasion, strangers wishing to raise them as their own children. In England, there were no laws concerning adoption until the 1920s, so most adoption was informal. Children who were adopted by their own social class were usually treated fairly and equally… however, if they were adopted by a family whose status was above and beyond their original class, they were frequently mistreated and neglected. Children of different social classes were not encouraged to fraternize, so if an orphan was taken into a household where higher class children lived, they could be forbidden to even speak to them (Czarnik).
Breast Cancer, as well as other forms of cancer, scientists do know how it occurs, but they do not know an exact cause. There are some genes in our body called oncogenes, genes that have potential to cause cancer, that increases the speed of cell division while other genes such as tumor suppressors, cause the cells to die at the correct time. Mutations that occur in the DNA, which “turn on” the oncogenes or “turn off” tumor suppressor genes, will cause some of the cells to be cancerous in the breast("American Cancer Society"). Also, Breast Cancer can be increased by inherited gene mutations and acquired gene mutations. The risk of Breast Cancer can be increased dramatically, through the inheritance from parent to offspring, if a mutation occurs. For example, if a suppressor gene, such as BRCA, forms a mutation, then it is likely to be passed to future generations. This gene no longer suppresses abnormal growth, therefore there is a higher chance of cancer being developed. Even though Breast Cancer can be inherited it is more likely to be acquired through one breast cell. The acquired mutations could be a result of of radiation or cancer-causing chemicals. ...
Cancer is a disease that affects many different parts of the body and a various number of people. When it comes to women, breast cancer is the leading type of cancer they may encounter. Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that rises up from the cell within the breast. There are a vast number of risk factors, sign and symptoms and treatment that go along with breast cancer.
Breast cancer can be caused by a variety of factors. Up until recently, many doctors believed breast cancer was strictly related to heredities. Research has shown that a woman whose mother, sister, or daughter has had breast cancer is two to three times more likely to develop the disease (“Breast Cancer Causes…”). Inherited genes mutations can be passed from parents to children, but they don’t make cancer inevitable. The majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history (Mayo Clinic Staff). Researchers have found a link between breast cancer and a woman’s amount of exposure to estrogen and progesterone over her lifetime. Women who began their period before age 12 or started menopause at an older age are more likely to develop breast cancer (Mayo Clinic Staff). Women who have never had children or had children after age thirty-five are also at greater risk (Mayo Clinic Staff). Any of these situations will alter the hormone levels of a woman’s body. In relation to this risk factor, doctors believe that growing older is one fac...
An orphanage is no place for a child. A child should be able to play and be happy, but the orphans of Afghanistan have more to worry about. They have to worry if they’ll have food to fill their stomachs. They’re scared that they will never have a true home. They are sad that they will never get to see their families again, and unfortunately, some of them don’t even remember their
Throughout our world, hundreds upon thousands of children are kept in orphanages. These children, who have no home, no parents, and no siblings to play with, are kept in a place where all they have left is their childhood; and even that is taken away from them in these living hells. Most people would define the word orphanage as a public or private institution for the care and protection of children without parents. However, this definition is far from what orphanages actually are. Orphanages do not institute care and protection for the orphans, but instead abuse them and make their lives miserable. But this abuse does not only restrict to physical abuse; mental, emotional, and sexual abuses are also included in their daily lives. With poor and squalid facilities, cribs to sleep in for 11 year olds, minimal food to eat, and inhumane care, these helpless children have no choice but to bear this treatment. Nevertheless, there are orphanages out there that do care for their children. They give them proper food, clothing, and have a clean environment, but still the children are neglected and not given the love and nurturing that they need and deserve. Poor countries like Bulgaria are not capable of giving their orphans the proper environment to live in. The nurses and staff of orphanages are not meeting their responsibilities as proper care-takers either. Orphanages were originally made to give children without parents care and love, but now the meaning and reality of orphanages have changed to a nightmare.
Breast Cancer affects and enter in the lives of women and it stays there for ever, in case you noitced early that you have the cancer maybe it can be removed . This type of cancer kills the majority of the women that do not take care of their selves. When a malignant tumor gets bigger, it affects the organ where this tumor is growing. When more than one tumor starts growing in one organ, the organ get infected and your body will not resist and you wil die. If you do not take care of yourself cancer can affect a lot of organs in your body, for example: Pancreas, Lungs, Liver , Brain, etc. To start preventing breast cancer it is truly important to go and have diagnostics of your body with your doctor.
