Along with being called Great Britain, it can also be called Britain, United Kingdom, or UK for short, and England, but in every country, there is loads to be discovered about.
The ancient history and culture in Britain was and still is very significant. Britain was involved in the Roman Empire. Many British cities were used as Roman military bases or civilian settlements. Also, by the end of the Roman empire christianity flourished in England. The Dark Ages were a period of time in Britain where no to little writings or evidence remains. After the recent end to the Roman Empire, the british government and military grew corrupt. Lack of military lead to many barbarian and Viking invasions. Vikings, or

The Prime Minister is the head of the UK government. He is responsible for the operation of the Civil Service, which is a group of people that does the usual daily work of the government, and government agencies. He also appoints members of the government and is the principal figure of the House of Commons. The Cabinet is a group of twenty-one people that meet together every week to discuss important government issues and problems. There are also ninty-six other ministers who are responsible for the actions, success, and failures of their own particular department or group of people they represent.
England, unlike the US, has an official state religion. The Queen is the supreme head of the Church. Out of all England, 43% is anglicanism (protestant), 10% Catholic, and 10% part of another Protestant or Greek Orthodox. UK is the second largest Jewish populated country in Europe.
Much like us in the US, Great Britain is split up into three social classes, Upper Class, Middle Class, and Lower or Working Class. The Upper Class consists of wealthy people, and aristocrats families. The middle class is what the majority of the english people are in. Last but not least, the lower class consists of the agricultural, mine, and factory
In America, our society is categorized by the poor, working, middle, upper middle, or upper class. Majority of America today seems to be under the working to middle class. It's hard to tell what
The Dark ages is the time between the 500’s and 1400’s. The Dark ages was a time of civil wars, Death, diseases, invasions and thief. There was a lot of invasions and to protect them self from that communities made a code call The code of Chivalry as (Doc 5) states “Europe in the Middle Ages was a dangerous place. Invasions from Muslims, Mongols, Vikings, and other tribal groups were common. War between lords was also common. The value of protection and warriors created a social code called Chivalry. Knights fought for lords and ladies, and lived by a gentleman- warrior code of Chivalry.” And other big thing in The Dark Ages was Diseases. Diseases in the dark ages was deadly because there was not antidote and even Doctors were scared of
Society has categorized individuals depending on their financial status and their income; also known as social class. There are three original social classes in America, upper, middle, and lower class. The classes may sometimes be further divided into upper- upper, lower-upper, upper-middle and lower middle; with the working and lower classes at the bottom; working poor and underclass.
In the United Kingdom, out of 40 major regions England and Wales shares the same legal system which is the English Legal System as commonly known and which is the basis of the common law, and is the same system used in most commonwealth countries.
Thus the political head of the UK is the Prime Minister(PM), who must be supported by the House of Commons.
In modern society these 3 traditional social classifications, working, middle and upper class are outdated, fitting less than 40 percent of the United Kingdom's population. In April 2013 the British Broadcast Corporation introduced a new model for social classification, within the United Kingdom. Social class and socioeconomic groups traditionally have been defined by income, occupation and ed...
There is a prime minister who enforces the laws and manages operation of the country. The parliament that the U.K. has is the British parliament hat is divided
Scotland has been a country that I have recently gotten obsessed with. I have traveled to many places: Cancun (Mexico), Costa Rica (South America), and many different states in the United States. Always for vacation, I have traveled for warmth, not the sites. Scotland’s weather is nothing to be too crazy about, never getting quite too cold or warm. The scenery of Scotland, I have only seen in pictures and it makes my heart melt! Also, I have never seen a castle and that would be a very different experience than what the United States could offer. Another reason I decided to dedicate my project to Scotland is that I don’t know a lot about it. To spend a lot of time researching a country, I wanted it to be something that I didn’t know
When Henry VIII established the Church of England, the fundamental change was the separation of church and state. This allowed England to take full control of their economy and getting rid of the pope. The Church of England is led by the King or Queen rather than a pope. Anglicanism also had more religious freedoms. For example, Anglicanism allows divorce, and recently women priesthood. The simplicity of Anglicanism appealed to a lot of England but the remaining Catholics rebelled and protested against the government7. The Catholic faith is surrounded around saints and the pope while Anglicanism is centered around the holy spirit and nation
First, Britain had some tremendous natural attributes. It was naturally endowed with many deposits of coal and iron ore, which were used heavily in the early stages of factory production. In addition, Britain was situated at a critical point for international trade. Its position between the United States and the rest of Europe allowed them to have a serious impact in all matters of trade. Likewise, a multitude of navigable waterways, easy access to the sea, and a mild climate all contributed to the onset of industrialism. Britain's topography was conducive to industrialism because its diversity allowed for the production of many agricultural products, preventing any sort of shortage or famine. Evans remarks, “Each single such advantage could be replicated in other European countries and some could be accentuated, but no other nation enjoyed such a rich combination of natural bounties” (111). Furthermore, the nation was free of many trade tariffs that hampered industry in other European nations while featuring a real opportunity for upward movement in society which provided a great incentive for acquiring wealth. Britain also experienced tremendous population growth which provided a potential workforce as well as an increase in the demand for goods.
An Italian scholar in the 1300s, Petrarch, created the name "dark ages" after the fall of Rome (Movie Talk-Dark Age). This is because he wanted to teach people that since the Ancient Greeks and Romans were in the "light" of learning the middle ages was in the "dark". The time period happened in Europe between 500 and 1500 was a "dark age" and a period of growth called the "growth age". Many events happened during this period, such as the 63 laws of the Magna Carta, the decline in trade and education, and the architecture of Cathedrals and Universities. Although there were a lot of horrible things, the documents give more evidence about the period of the growth age than the "dark age".
It is understandable that medieval, anglo saxon britain is often referred to as the dark ages. This can be seen as the dark ages are compared with other eras and how historians don't know a significant amount about this time. In some ways, this period of time has been lost to history. Many important records from this time have not survived. This world is also closely related to Beowulf as seen through the countless battles being fought during this era. Therefore it is clearly shown through the many battles fought in this era and how little we actually know about this time why anglo saxon Britain was also referred to as the dark ages.
British literature refers to literature associated with the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Channel Islands. This includes literatures from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. By far the largest part of British literature has been written in the English language, with English literature developing into a global phenomenon, because of its use in the former colonies of Britain. In addition the story of British literature involves writings in Anglo-Norman, Anglo Saxon, Cornish, Welsh and other languages. Literature in Northern Ireland includes writings in English, Irish and Ulster Scots. Irish writers have played an important part in the development of literature in England and Scotland, but though the whole of Ireland was politically part of the United Kingdom between January 1801 and December 1922, it is controversial to describe Irish literature as British. For some this includes works by authors from Northern Ireland. Also, because of the creation of the Republic of Ireland, the term the Isles is used instead of the British Isles.
First the Dark Ages were very dangerous, you could easily get hurt or injured. For example the romans were robbed and attacked by the Barbarian tribes. Then they were eventually taken over by their tribes. In addition it was very hard to live in this time period. Most of these families grew just enough food to feed only their family with nothing
United Kingdom is a state sovereign island located opposite the northwestern coast of mainland Europe. The UK includes the island of Great Britain, the northeastern part of the island of Ireland , and many other smaller islands.
