Environmental problems happen everywhere around the world. Something similar happened in the Gray Area. The Gray Area is a region that is surrounded by mountains and rivers. The Missterssipi river, the Rafta river, and the Fo river are the rivers that currently exist in the Gray Area. These three rivers flow down and congregate to the Gray Bay. There are many tourist attractions in the Gray Area like, the golf course. Recently, fish have been dying and have been washing on to the shores of the Gray Bay. Dying fish is bad for many environmental reasons. Dead fish is unpleasant and it has a bad smell, which is what tourists don’t want to see or smell. A population graph has been done and it has showed that the deer population went up when the hunting of mountain lions was allowed. A secchi disk test was tested on all rivers and it showed that only Missterssippi river had too much sediment. A secchi disk is an instrument that measure how polluted the water is with sediment. A graph has been done on water temperatures and it showed that the upper and lower Missterssippi river had higher temperatures than other rivers. Mountain lions control the population of the deer by eating or hunting the weak and old deer. The mountain lions also help keeping the overall population healthier.The secchi disk is a disk with a colorful black and white pattern that has a colored string attached to it. In order to measure how polluted the water is, you have to follow a couple steps. First, you lower down the secchi disk by the string. The string has a separation of white and black. You lower it down until you reached the point where you can’t see it. Then you pinch the part of the string that has made direct contact with the surface of the water and you raise up the secchi disk. If the part you pinched is within the white part of the string, the water is healthy and clear. If the part you pinched is within the black part of the string, the water is unhealthy and dirty. How can this can contribute to the deaths of fish? Ever since mountain lion hunting was allowed, the mountain lion population dropped and the deer population went up. Mountain lions eat deer as prey and since there are fewer mountain lions to hunt them down, the deer population would go up higher. Since there was too many deer in the park, the deer overgrazed the plants. Now that plants are destroyed by the overpopulation of deer, runoff can go through without restriction, carrying sediment with it much faster. It also creates erosion. Erosion

Grass is no more greener on the other side of anything. Fish either leave or are left for dead. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the largest garbage dump in the world. According to estimates made by experts, the patch holds approximately three and a half million tons of garbage. Majority of this garbage is made of plastic. This waste is a threatening problem to the patch’s surrounding wildlife. Many animals are caught in the floating pieces of trash and it is the cause of the deaths of about one million birds and about one hundred thousand other sea animals. Due to the oceans nature and constant moving currents, the trash is also constantly moving. Therefore the size of the patch never stays the exact same. However, scientists believe it be approximately two times the size of Texas. The plastic is mostly broken down from larger materials into small pieces. The patch has been referred to as one scientist as a, “plastic soup”. This garbage poses such a threat mainly because it does not biodegrade. These plastics will be in the ocean essentially forever. Many plastics also contain chemicals, and absorb other chemicals and pollutants they become exposed to. These newly absorbed toxins are then leaked and distributed back into the ocean over time. The chemicals can directly enter the bodies of the animals which consume them. A study was being conducted by scientists of the fish that inhabit the area around the patch. What the researchers found inside the belly of one fish (that was no larger in size than that of a finger), was eighty four small fragments of plastic. The Chesapeake Bay is a large bay that stretches from Maryland to Virginia, fed by many rivers and streams that run from as far north as New York to Virginia and West Virginia.5 It is home to a plethora of plants and fish species, many of which the people of the area fish for food and supplies. The pollution present in the Chesapeake Bay is affecting the livelihood of both the fishermen and the fish – the less the fishermen haul due to the death of the species they catch, the less they get paid – and as consumers of these fish, we are consuming the toxins as well.

The quality of any water sources is imperative to every creature in the ecosystem due it being vital to survival. For example, humans can’t go without water for a few days while can survive for days without food. Hence protecting water sources is imperative. Lake Merritt is a tidal lagoon in the center of Oakland California, a refuge for animals. Lake Merritt was created by Dr. Samuel Merritt, the Mayor of Oakland, who at that time owned a majority of the properties near the shorelines of the lagoon ("A Brief History"). He proposed to construct a dam to manipulate the flow of the water to enable the water level inland to rise, thus turning the lagoon into a lake. Sewages and storm drains were later directed into the lake, thus the condition of the lake reflects the community level of pollution within the ecosystem. Throughout the years, Lake Merritt has deteriorated and still is due to the pollution and the stagnant state of the water. The pungent stench releases during the drought seasons and the summer’s heat cause the lake once beautify state to decline. However, in November 2002, Oakland voters approved a $198 million dollar bond measure to fund restoration and clean water projects throughout the city. A total of $115 million was allocated for Lake Merritt’s restoration (Miller). However, there are critics conveying the misused of funds and that Oakland can’t afford to fund this project. The enormous loan from the projects will have to be pay off from the people of Oakland through higher charge for public services and tax’ rates. Overfishing may have some benefits to it, but does it out way the negatives? By fulfilling our demand we can wipe out our whole oceans! Not just the fish, but water mammals too. Sure it can create jobs, but as what cost? It can help bring up our economy, but at the same time it can bring it down with many fish companies closing down due to lack of profit. Fish is a great source of nutrients, but too much can kill you! In other words, fish can be both beneficial and harmful to not only humans, but everyone and everything surrounding fish. There are three things people can do to help with overfishing, the first thing is to be aware of what you are eating. Is the fish on the fear of extinction list? Also asking yourself is the fish you’re about to eat really the fish you intend to eat? Another thing to ask is, was it shipped over seas? If it was it doesn’t benefit anyone, it won’t help the economy or you. Many fish shipped from a long ways creates pollution and may have lost its nutrients value from the long voyage. One last thing to do is if you see a sewer with a sign leading to the ocean, try not to leave trash near it, or better yet don’t litter at all! All the litter left out on streets or near sewers can cause pollution in oceans, lakes, and rivers which is very harmful for marine life. You can still enjoy fish, but not at such a high demand as

Terrell (2015) states that the three inch delta smelt was decided to be in danger of going extinct a little more than twenty years ago. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has claimed that systems used by farmers to retrieve water from the delta have added to the dropping number of delta smelt. Conservationists think it is necessary for people and farmers to take their water from sources other than the delta in order to preserve the characteristics of the delta (Terrell, 2015). Dr. Peter Moyle of UC Davis stated in an interview,“We have 80 fish species in California, like the delta smelt, that are in trouble” (Cited in Terrell, 2015, p.12). Moyle insists that it is more than just the three inch delta smelt that is in danger, it is at least seventy-nine other species that need protecting as well. As interviewed by Siegler (2015), senior water rights farmer, Rudy Mussi knows the importance of the delta and preserving it, not just so he can use its water on his fields, but also to keep it alive for the future. It has been suggested that water be taken out of the delta and moved to farmers in the lower portion of California who have junior water rights (Siegler, 2015). The delta cannot be overused because it is important that the ratio of saltwater to freshwater stays the same in order to preserve the fish population. He discusses an experiment done by a zoologist named Robert T. Paine. Paine decided to do an experiment to see what happens when one disrupts an ecosystem. He conducted his experiment on rocks along the shore in which a species of starfish was the top predator. Paine’s experiment consisted of grabbing the starfish off the rocks and throwing them into the ocean. His results showed that one single species has a tremendous effect on its ecosystem.
