The Grammy Museum, located in Downtown Los Angeles, is a place for young music professionals to visit in hopes of finding inspiration to pursue a music-related career and knowledge about the history of music in America. The museum offers interactive experiences to make the educational experience more hands-on for visitors. Although certain exhibits may attract a niche audience of avid music fans, entry is quite accessible, yet there is also an emphasis on becoming a part of their community. For example, if you are a member of the Grammy University program, which has a one-time admission fee of fifty dollars, you are granted free admission at any time. As well as permanent exhibits, the museum hosts intriguing seasonal events such as the “I …show more content…
The museum balances new and old by showcasing the history of music while also celebrating history in the making. A few years back, it opened the first Latin music exhibit in Los Angeles, a city with a prominent Latino population. Critics of the award show have called out Academy voters for having biases towards certain groups of people. Therefore, the museum needs to celebrate the diverse groups of people that have contributed to music in America. Tickets to enter the Grammy Museum are fairly inexpensive and range from twelve to eighteen dollars. Similar to other museums, the price depends on certain factors as discounts are applied to children and seniors, college students, and veterans. For example, the National Gallery of Art in Washington offers “the same thing at different prices to different people, as well as quantity-discounted admission with a newsletter subscription” (O’Hare). For big music fans, the price may be worth it, but the general public is potentially better off going to a free museum or one that better suits their interests. With many cheaper museum alternatives in the Downtown LA area, the pricing is not
The two concerts that I chose to go see were Stanislaus State Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensembles & Combos Concert. These two concerts are both very similar yet different in their own ways. Each piece also has many attributes to contribute and it was fun being able to watch two very different genres.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has a website that announces its programs. Anyone can easily find and choose a concert. I chose a concert for Sunday July 25, 2010. This concert was emerging artists from Ipalpiti Festibal 2010. It included the four pieces of music that are described below. One of these was Fantasiestucke, Opus 88, both Romanze and Duet were preformed. This concerto was performed by pianist Luiza Borac, violinist Vladimir Dyo, and cellist Yves Dharamraj. The second piece was Ahnung, a new discovery piece from Kinderszenen. This piece was U.S. Premiere, played solo by the pianist Luiza Borac. The third piece was Piano Quartet in E-flat major, Opus 47. This piece was an Andante cantabile piece. This concerto was performed by pianist Luiza Borac, violinist Conrad Chow and Adelya Shagidullina, and Cellist Kian Soltani. The last piece was Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Opus 44. What I discovered about my own musical understanding by attending this concert is the following thing. I know how to appreciate and to enjoy music that is a little bit familiar, but my understanding stops when a very new type of music is performed. I made a conclusion from this experience. My conclusion is that learning about music will increase the pleasure of listening to music, but that musical learning is not, perhaps, as easy as learning subjects like Math or History.
For this critique, I was fortunate enough to attend a jazz performance by Deborah Davis and Ben Rosenblum. Davis was the vocalist and Rosenblum was the pianist. This concert was part of a jazz concert series presented by Preservation New Jersey and the New Jersey Jazz Society. I enjoyed this performance because I was able to witness a professional pianist play up close in a relaxed setting. I was seated in the second pew of the sanctuary, directly in view of Rosenblum’s hands as he performed. This allowed me to not only listen to Rosenblum’s music, but also view his technique and positions throughout the performance. In addition, I am not often able to witness professional jazz performances, but I look forward to attending more in the future.
Most things have their beginnings in something small: a word, a breath, or idea; but not music. Music begins with a single vibration. It explodes and carries on, morphing worlds of unrelated personas. It lives rampantly in the mouths of millions of unruly and free-spirited teenagers, like a fever. The rock 'n roll trend that defiantly rose against the conformist ideology of the mid-twentieth century left remnants that commenced the start of a progressing society: a culture that redefined the rules of society and pushed social and moral limits while addressing social concerns.
The Woodstock Music Festival was a music event in Bethel, New York that changed the way people live. During August of 1969, many large crowds of American music lovers all came together to listen to the music of their favorite musicians for this huge music event. Woodstock swept the nation with not only talented musicians, but also many new thoughts and opinions on the world. This popular concert event introduced the ideas of peace, unity, kindness, and togetherness. The Woodstock Festival made a major impact on the United States. It helped people overcome prejudices, informed people about the danger of drugs, led to safer and better prepared concerts, and started a chain of music events all around the world. On August 15 through 18 of 1969
The changes in rock and roll music reflected the mood of the population in the United States during the Vietnam War. Rock and roll, written as rock ‘n’ roll, music was fully born in the 1950’s and formed from electric blues and gospel music. Rock and roll is characterized by electric guitars, a strong rhythm and youth-orientated music. This music became popular because of the children of the decade. Parents called this type of music “noise.” While parents were listening to calm music, their children were listening to rock n roll.
The Archibald prize is an annual portrait competition open to all Australian artists who are interested in the field of art, literature, science, or politics. The Archibald prize was first awarded in 1921. This open competition is judged by the trustees of the art gallery of NSW (Art gallery of NSW, 2017). Two interesting artists have entered this annual portrait competition, Anh Do and Andrew Lloyd Green Smith were the two people that entered this competition. These two artists really express the essential features of this competition by recognising the art of significant Australians.
The history of Jazz music is one that is tied to enslavement, and prejudices. It Is impossible to separate the development of Jazz music from the racial oppression that occurred in the United States as they are inextricably connected. Slavery was a part of our country’s development that is shameful and yet, lead to some of the greatest musical advances of the twentieth century.
Today I will be presenting an analysis of my favourite song, “Fix You” by Coldplay. Since I was a little kid, in 2005, when it was first released, I have been listening to this song. My parents loved Coldplay at the time, so I was played their music since I was a baby, and I loved this song from the first time I listened to it. “Fix You” by Coldplay, is a rock song that deals with true love, helping someone in their time of need, and learning from your mistakes, but I d liken it to my personal, or childhood memories. Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin hasn't spoken about the specific inspiration for the song, but it could be directed to his wife, who was dealing with the death of her father in 2002. Martin did say where the song started: "My father-in-law Bruce Paltrow bought this big keyboard just before he died. No one had ever plugged it in. I plugged it in, and there was this incredible sound I'd never heard before. All these songs poured out from this one sound. I love its gentle and strong dynamics at different times and its mixed meanings to different people. Guy Berryman, Jon ...
Throughout history music has had a profound effect on a person’s mind, body, and consciousness. A song or piece of music can trigger vivid memories, and induce emotions ranging from deep sorrow to unabashed joy. Music can drive listeners to patriotic fervor or religious frenzy, or it can soothe the savage beast we call human. There have been many advances in technology that have let us study how music affects the brain. Music causes all sorts of activity in the brain, especially during musical improvisation. Music can tremendously help people with certain mind damaging diseases, and in some cases it can have negative effects.
I attended “The Spring Jazz Collaboration” featuring the “CSI Jazz Combo”, “Swing Band”, and “Madrigal Ensemble” on March 9th. At first I thought it was just going to be three people playing the saxophone, the drums, and the bass. I was obviously wrong. Each song had their unique sound. I really liked how each musician had their own solo because it helped me hear the instrument and know what they sound like and that’s coming from a person who had never experienced a Jazz concert. The concert was broken up into four different sections. When the musicains walked out, I felt like they were a little nervous but when they started to play fell back into their comfort zone. Through the whole concert, I could see their passion for mucic.
The diverse age of Rock and Roll existed concurrently with the movement to grant civil rights to African Americans in the establishment of a new genre of music. When it first became known, with its wild sound and influence over a younger audience that involved sex, drugs, and a social change from past norms, white, religious, middle class and elderly groups interpreted it as a risqué and obscene music genre. Adults mainly disapproved of Rock and Roll’s sexual lyrics and its performers with the rebellious attitudes it created, and that it originated from African American culture. In most cases, parents disliked white youth listening to “black sounding” music and attending concerts where half the audience and artists were black. Changing racial attitudes and the popularity of Rock and Roll music encouraged American white racial barriers to be threatened by white and black teenagers. It further spread by the appeal of Rock and Roll songs to younger audiences, gaining ever-escalating popularity. As Glenn Altschuler, an acclaimed author and professor at Cornell University, quotes, “rock ‘n’ roll nonetheless provided a fresh perspective, celebrating leisure, romance, and sex, deriding deferred gratification… and delighting in the separate world of the teenager” . The rapid success of Rock and Roll spread from teenagers promoting up and coming artists, whether they were black or white, causing segregation to slowly dissipate and integration to come into play. This switch from previous lifestyles and behaviors of the 1950s to different and more relaxed attitudes about lifestyles and behaviors came in great part from the huge contrast in styles of music, both vocal and instrumental. Rock and Roll was ultimately controversial due to black a...
Jazz is a music genre that is very rich in culture which is why I decided to attend a Jazz concert. This was my first Jazz event I had ever been to. I went to see the band The Chairman and the Board. This was a blues swing band. Having been to other concerts, I was expecting something similar as far as atmosphere and crowd. I was proved very wrong as this concert defied all my expectations and was in a whole different field as far as life entertainment goes. The first thing I noticed right off the bat was the audience. The age range of this audience was mainly 40-70. I definitely felt like the odd man out when I was there. It did get me thinking though, why was this audience so much older? I looked into the era of when most of those people
Introduction: In the past, music has been a costly business, where only people with a lot of money could enter and be successful in the industry. Changes in the music industry, coupled with new computer technology, have made it much easier for people without a lot of money to compose, produce, and distribute their creations. In order to get a better understanding of the music industry in comparison to 2014, one has to look at its history. There were many things that happened from the 1980’s onward, and they brought on a significant impact towards the music industry.
My favorite musical moment during the event was when the band explained the meaning of a few songs performed. Each song announced had a different meaning and a different reason for it being written. For example, the one song was written after the Cleveland Cavaliers won the championship game and how they felt. This was interesting to hear because if you’ve grown up in Ohio for your whole life, you understand what that game meant to everyone. To hear how a song/ why a song was created was a unique experience, especially when for once you are able to relate to it. Honestly, it made the songs more interesting, since you were able to feel the passion for that song along with them!
