Graffiti or street art is considered an art form because it includes aesthetic criteria, incoherence and nonstandard presentation. Graffiti has been developing since the late 1960’s. The origins of graffiti go back to the beginnings of human social interaction. Graffiti has been found in uncovered, ancient Egyptian monuments and graffiti was preserved on walls in Pompeii. Also, graffiti art is colorful and complex. Graffiti artists need a considerable amount of skills to complete their artwork, they need to have creativity for using spray paint. I think that graffiti art belongs to subway trains, tunnel walls and building walls because people can access those places easily and it helps to express people’s creativity and thoughts. Subway trains are good places to draw graffiti art. Since the late 1970’s, artists painted on subway trains and it was a stage to figure out the best art in New York. According to the novel, ”Scale a yard fence, hop a track, hit a car, run off send the steel out into the bright morning without a window to see through, the whole train tagged head to toe” (McCann 169). In the novel, the character Fernando Marcano was a photographer and he took the picture of all graffiti art. When he went to the New York subway, he saw a train and it was covered by colorful graffiti art even the window was covered by art too. The subway trains travel from one place to another place, so, many people can see when someone’s name or art is on the train in colorful or unique styles. Most of time, the artist has a target audience to show their art such as other graffiti artists, and subway trains are the best way to show it. To be a king or queen of art, it cannot be enough to simply have his or her name in a thousand different places. The goal of subway art is to create burners, which are pieces that stand out because of creativity, color, vibrancy, crisp outlines and overall artist appeal. It’s the recognizable artistic talent of the graffiti artist that establishes his or her region on the subway line. So, I think the subway train is a right place for graffiti art. For the graffiti art, above ground tunnel walls are the best choice, because artists have an enough space to draw their art and they don’t need any permission for their art.
To draw a graffiti, they need at least eight hours, a sixty foot long and twelve foot wide wall and also, they need twenty to thirty cans for their art. Colum McCann’s novel, Let the Great World Spin, also talks about graffiti done on the tunnel walls in New York and he wrote in his novel, “he trills the sighting through his mind, matches it up against all the old tags in other part of the tunnel, and he figures it’s brand new, it must be, yes, and he gives a quiet first pump-someone’s come and tagged downtown” (McCann 174). In the novel, graffiti art photographer Fernando Marcano went to the tunnel and saw a graffiti art on a tunnel wall what he already took the picture but, he saw some new arts too which he didn’t see before there. Graffiti art on the tunnel wall beautifies the community by appearing on areas that would be eyesores. From my personal experience, during in our trip “Top to Bottom”, I observed that the building was covered by different type of colorful paintings, pictures and, writings. That pictures inspired and amazed me. Every picture has a different meaning and artist wants to show people by his graffiti art. Also, People use the building wall to raise their voice against of any unlawful work and show their ideas. For example, in 1971, Bangladesh fought with Pakistan to get the freedom. Bangladeshi graffiti artist wrote the slogan on the building wall to inspire people to fight with Pakistani army. Although street art and graffiti art seem very similar, upon closer examination the differences in technique, function, culture, and intent are revealed (Weisburg.) ‘“Graffiti (sgraffiti), meaning drawings or scribblings on a flat surface and deriving from the Italian sgraffio (‘scratch’), with a nod to the Greek graphein (‘to write’), originally referred to those marks found on ancient Roman architecture”’(Weisburg). Though, it is unknown when or where graffiti first made an appearance; modern graffiti did not come around until the late 1960’s to early 1970’s in New York.
