When you think about your high school years, I’m sure we all have exceptional and dreadful memories. I’m sure all of us remember who was voted most popular, best dressed, who were the misfits of the school. If you want a glimpse of the different social classes in high school watch Mean Girls. Cady Heron is a freshman who for most of her life was home schooled and lived in Africa. Upon her first few days of school being the “new girl” she doesn’t quite fit it, until one day she accidently receives an invite from Regina George the most popular as well as the most hated girl in school to sit with her and friends at lunch. Soon after, she pretends to like them and hang out with them for inside information. During her investigation, she turns into
what she despised and ultimately has to right her wrongs. As with any teen movie there are myths and misconceptions that are presented. For example, Regina is by far exceedingly callous towards everyone, even her inner circle. Being prominent doesn’t necessarily constitute the right for being malicious. Additionally, Cady was superb in math and to gain the attention of her crush she deceives him into thinking she is horrible in math. Many believe that intelligence is not the greatest attraction, but in fact it’s quite enticing. Adolescent psychology issues such as social loneliness, false self, bullying, social cognition certainly did not go un-noticed in this movie. Cady expressed her feelings of social loneliness on her first day of school and she ate in the bathroom alone, but once she made friends her social relationships improved a great deal.
In the movie “Mean Girls”, there is a new girl named Caty that moves back to the United States from Africa. She was home schooled all her life and never experienced the high school life. There were two people that befriended her when she first started her classes. They showed Caty the in’s and out’s of the high school. Some examples would be which table to sit at during lunch, who the popular people were, and what was considered social suicide. These were the typical lessons each adolescent learns as they go through high school. Three examples I picked out from the movie were great examples that mimicked what adolescents go through.
The film Mean Girls is about a young girl, Cady Heron, born and raised in Africa by her zoologist parents, who were also her homeschool teachers for sixteen years. When Cady moves to the United States, she enrolls in a public school for the first time. Here she realizes that high school students have the same hierarchy as the animals she observed in Africa. The lowest ranking group in this high school hierarchy is the outcasts, who also happen to be Cady’s first friends in the U.S. The highest on the high school food chain are the “plastics”. The “plastics”, are the most popular girls in school. The plastic’s notice Cady’s charming personality and stunning good looks and invite her to join their clique. In order to avenge her first friends,
David McCullough Jr., delivered the commencement at Wellesley High School in Massachusetts on June 1st 2012 to staff, the 2012 graduates, and their family and friends. The speech was straightforward and supplied valuable information for their future. . McCullough’s speech at times felt harsh, offensive, and insulting. His words and examples were given to achieve insight, knowledge, and awareness for each student’s future. The commencement expressed a great deal of achievement, but conveyed that there was more work to be done. His speech was effective and appreciated through humor parallelism, repetition, and anaphora. His point of view has obtained respect and determination by all those that have been challenged and have heard his words.
In our modern world, sociology has a tremendous impact on our culture, mainly through the processes and decisions we make everyday. For movies and television shows especially, sociological references are incorporated throughout the storyline. A movie which includes many sociological examples is Mean Girls. Mean Girls is a movie based on the life of home-schooled teenage girl, Cady Heron, who moves to the United States from Africa and is placed in a public school for the first time. Cady finds herself in many uncomfortable scenarios and has to deal with the trials and tribulations pertaining to everyday high school issues. Her experiences involve interacting with high school cliques, such as ‘the plastics’, weird high school teachers, relationships,
...class conscious, ?I don?t suppose for a moment that we can understand why the girl committed suicide. Girls of that class?? Mrs Birling says, being so overly class conscious that she is automatically judging everybody by their class status. This is again making us compare her with people of all different classes and members of the family, such as Sheila. When the Inspector leaves, unlike Sheila, Mrs Birling tries to carry on as if nothing has happened, ?you?re just beginning to pretend all over again,? says Sheila, showing she has been influenced by the Inspector when her mother has not.
"Cold, shiny, hard, PLASTIC," said by Janice referring to a group of girls in the movie Mean Girls. Mean Girls is about an innocent, home-schooled girl, Cady who moves from Africa to the United States. Cady thinks she knows all about survival of the fittest. But the law of the jungle takes on a whole new meaning when she enters public high school and encounters psychological warfare and unwritten social rules that teen girls deal with today. Cady goes from a great friend of two "outcasts", Janice and Damien to a superficial friend of the "plastics", a group of girls that talks about everyone behind their back and thinks everyone loves them. Adolescent egocentrism and relationships with peers are obviously present throughout the film. I also noticed self worth in relationships, parenting styles, and juvenile delinquency throughout Mean Girls.
High school can be a place full of cliques and groups of friends but some people aren’t always in cliques. If there is a person who doesn’t always like the same things as other people they might not fit in with a group of people. In high school a person may become different and not find a group of friends that they fit in with. With no group of friends a person in high school may start to become an outcast. Laurie Halse Anderson, the author of Speak used Melinda to show that any high school student can become an outcast.
In the movie, 16 year old Cady Heron was the daughter of zoologist parents. They had been on a 12 year research trip in Africa before returning to the states so Cady was homeschooled most of all her life. While attending public school for the first time, Cady is swept away by who she thought she was to the new person she had become. A “plastic” is what she had become. The Plastics were the most popular girls in school, but also the messiest and most insecure. Downing others to make themselves feel better was what The Plastics lived for. It took for chaos, confusion, and betrayal for them to get to the gist of who they really are as individuals. The adolescence period in one’s life is a very tough and exciting time. A teen is constantly going through changes daily; physically, mentally and emotionally. Those with a strong sense of self make a smooth transition during this period, while others still looking for a sense of belonging seem to struggle. During the middle school years, they begin to develop more interpersonal relationships and peer acceptance be...

At times it may have been extremely difficult for some of us to predict where we would be today, but now we can embark upon our goals and congratulate ourselves for always striving to conquer our missions. No longer do we need to reminisce about what we were unable to accomplish - for we have accomplished the first step in our education.
This speech is bigger than me... bigger than this graduating class... and the world surrounding us. It is an epiphany. This speech is for the little guy, the middle man and the guy who is always behind the scenes... For the past four years, we have seen stories, read newspaper articles, and have heard announcements about our star athletes, scholars and over achievers.
I agree with you that teen films genre like the movie Mean Girls does not reflect reality. I also agree that the teen films all have the stereotypes that are in all movies that have a high school setting. In my personal experience in high school these stereotypes did not exist for me as well. I do see how students in teen films are often not allowed to be friends with anyone they want now that you pointed it out. In my personal experience however many people were friends with everyone at my school there wasn't people that were only allowed to talk to a specific group. After reading this I now see that teachers or any other staff members are not really included in big roles in the teen movies. In reality teachers and other staff members
There is a distinct difference between knowledge and wisdom. I can tell you that as honor society president I have seen many smart people do stupid things. Let's just say that mixing a very large lunch with a bobbing ship and an admissions officer from the University of California equals a vomitous situation.
Hey Jem it’s been a long time since I last spoke with you, and I would like to tell you Me and Scout are doing mighty fine just on our own.
