I am writing this paper off a Google Drive document, and found all my research through Google search engine. Google recently announced, that Gmail now has 425 million users, and is being used by government agencies in forty-five states and sixty-six of the top one hundred Universities have gone Google. Google also announced at it’s recent developer conference, over five million businesses have gone Google. Google is an American multinational thriving corporation, and one of the most common household words in modern society. For young adults nearing college graduation, many may dream of working at Google and experiencing the modern, unique technology benefits Google offers their employees. According to CNN Money Fortune, Google is number one on the best companies to work for list, and after interviewing a “Googler” readers can confirm the statement, though it’s fun, that Google has a productive work environment that keeps employees happy, and makes it the best company to work for.
Google makes our life easier. The company has grown from when it was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, to provide around fifty different products beyond the basic Google search. With the multitude of technologies, that vary from maps to docs, Google’s job consists of making it quicker and easier to find the information needed to get what you need to your task done. Google builds the background programs and helpful tools that millions of businesses use to succeed, as well as create products for the web that help the environment, and people get what they want on the Web faster. The overall entire Google community centered on the idea of collaboration creates an atmosphere for workers to feel comfortable and want help build on this amazing, current idea of introducing new methods to keep our world advancing in modern ways. Google is much different than working at your average twelve hour cubicle job, it’s a lot more fun according to Kieran. Everyone at Google is dedicated to their contribution of making lives easier. Google obviously is taking the world and creating new ideas that will only help in the modern technological community. The atmosphere may be different at Googleplex but it sure seems to working considering a fact from statistic brain that states, Google receives a 5,922,000,000 average of searches per day. Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid” and Sherry Turkle’s “How Computers Change the Way We Think” both discuss the influence of technology to their own understanding and perspective. The first work by Nicholas Carr is about the impact technology has on his mind. He is skeptical about the effect it could cause in the long term of it. He gives credible facts and studies done to prove his point. While Sherry Turkle’s work gives a broad idea of the impact of technology has caused through the years. She talks about the advances in technology and how it is changing how people communicate, learn and think. If only my local library could hold the vast quantity of information that my hand held smart phone does. Carr insinuates that Google (and the internet) is making us stupid. I say they are making us lazy. In “Is Google Making Us Stupid” by Nicholas Carr informatively states that with the advancement of technology, Google search engine, and the internet we are become more distracted—with all the different forms of flash media, the amount of hyper-links after hyper-link after hyper-links, and clickable adds-- in turn we are doing less critical reading by way of the internet as opposed to a printed book. Being able to glance over several articles in hour’s verses days looking through books; being able to jump from link to link in order to get the information you need, never looking at the same page twice has decrease out deep thinking and reading skills.
