College graduate students need to learn how to acquire marketable job skills, communicate effectively, and have a good work ethic upon graduating to succeed in today’s workplace. The courses taken in college don’t primarily focus on skill development. Colleges will generally give out opportunities to help students with problem solving, time management, and written/verbal communication but most students don’t know how to take those opportunities. A New York Time article stated, “a 1999 report by the Business Higher Education forum condemned graduates for lack of skills in problem solving, time management, analytical thinking, and basic writing and speaking” (Coplin). You need to kick yourself in the butt and not give up just because a skill is hard to obtain, always be committed and follow through. Employers want employees who are self-motivated, self-motivation keeps you going and most of the people who are successful are those who do things for themselves. Today employers seek graduates that meet the needs of the workforce. The “basic fundamentals” and “workplace skills” are nowadays left out of curriculum (McAleer). Trust is essential within your work ethic, being honest and hard-working means having a good work ethic. Having a good work ethic means having pride in your work, good attendance, integrity, and a positive attitude. Always put forth the maximum effort texasworkprep). Your employers need to trust you to make sure you will fulfill any commitments you make. The key to every professional job is being able to handle multiple assignments while not missing any high routine activities like summiting weekly reports. More than half of those employers stated that they had trouble finding qualified students to fit the job openings. Graduates today aren’t coming out of school with the right skill set, they don’t know how to put an idea forward and support it. College graduates are expected to have “real world” experience. All jobs skills, building relationships, managing your time, and being organized are valuable to employers. Employers today believe college graduates are missing being able to think critically and problem solve. Employers look for “do it yourself” workers, those who are creative and problem solvers
