College graduate students need to learn how to acquire marketable job skills, communicate effectively, and have a good work ethic upon graduating to succeed in today’s workplace. The courses taken in college don’t primarily focus on skill development. Colleges will generally give out opportunities to help students with problem solving, time management, and written/verbal communication but most students don’t know how to take those opportunities. You need to kick yourself in the butt and not give up just because a skill is hard to obtain, always be committed and follow through. In David Brook’s essay, “It’s Not About You,” Brooks mentions and describes the challenges college graduates face when looking for a job. He goes on and describes how this generation is different than any other generation. He explains how college graduates don’t go on and get married, buy houses, and have kids like previous generations. These points are just three of many that could be used to describe a hard worker, they are the three that I fell are the most important. With a good mix of knowledge, punctuality, and willingness to do a job well anyone can get a job. The idea to work hard is in everybody, it’s just finding a way to tap into that ability in yourself.
