Written by two young and little known boys of the time, Matt Damon (also plays the protagonist ‘Will’) and Ben Afflect (as ‘Chuckie’, his best pal in the movie), ‘Good Will Hunting’ is a timeless portrayal of emotions and human psychology. Directed by Gus Van Sant, the movie walks us through the journey of a young man who struggles emotionally due to the horrors of his past and is not game enough for anticipated loses. At the same time he possesses gifts of genius intellect and mathematical thinking. The adventures of such a character lead him to a psychologist with relatable experiences, Sean (an Oscar performance by Robert Williams), who touches and heals his soul and makes him free to make difficult choices. Finally, after much self-reflection, Will decides to cease being a victim of his own inner demons and to take charge of his life. The difference between being well-read and being truly educated and reflective seems to be one of the essential points writers wanted to bring forth as depicted in scenes like the bar discussion where Will outsmarts a Harvard grad or the park bench discussion between Sean and Will where Sean makes Will understand the real motivation behind his painting, one which no book of art or deductive mental talent could measure. Will without doubt is a genius of the mind, of the calculate-ables, the deduce-ables but a sick child in the cold with matters of the heart, of instincts, the outcomes of whom are best told by time. The movie failed to bag as many Oscars as some may say it deserved, partly due to release ‘in the year of the Titanic’, but some of the scenes will be remembered for long due to sheer magnitude of the emotions they generate on the audience and the exemplary acting showcased by some of the better names in cinema art of the modern times. ‘It is not your fault’ scene marks the peak of those all, a fine example of gripping and shaking the very soul of the audience. Surely it isn’t the best of storylines till date but these frequent scenes of perfection make it an unforgettable part of cinema
