Although evil always looks to be an unstoppable force at times, good always prevails and comes out on top and it is displayed in the epic Beowulf. In the epic all hope looks to be lost by the powerful evil presence, but good jumps in and triumphs over the evil and secures a victory over the evil. With having a theme of good versus evil the main characters Beowulf and Grendel serve purpose to the story's resolution and for their fighting side.
Grendel is the evil monster force in this epic, his life is cursed by God and he is born as an evil monster due to him being a descendent of Cain, who had his descendants cursed by God because of his evil sin in killing his brother Abel. “He was spawned in that slime/ conceived by a pair of those monsters
born/ of Cain, murderous creatures banished/ by God, punished forever for the crime, of Abel’s death” (21-23, 24). Grendel, incredibly strong and stealthy terrorizes the city of Herot, killing the Dane warriors in their sleep, feasting on the flesh of the warriors. Grendel repeats his killings for 12 years, “So Herot/ stoody empty, and stayed deserted for years/ Twelve winters of grief for Hrothgar, king/ of the Danes” (60-63, 25). Good must step in to help the city of Herot from the fear being spread by the evil monster Grendel, that is when the mighty hero Beowulf steps in. Beowulf, the mighty powerful man that he is; hears of the monster’s killings in Herot and sets sail to search and kill the monster, “and the strongest of the Geats -greater/ and stronger than anyone anywhere in the world/ Heard how Grendel filled nights with horror/ and quickly commanded a boat fitted out” (92-94, 26). Beowulf goes to Grendel because he feels it is his purpose in life to leave behind a legacy of being a hero. Grendel gives Beowulf purpose in this story with his evil presence that Beowulf seeks to fight, without evil Beowulf is left with no purpose and no legacy to leave behind. In the final between the good and evil forces of Beowulf and Grendel, Beowulf overcomes the adversity of the powerful monster and slays Grendel, “The infamous killer fought/ for his freedom/ wanting no flesh but retreat,/ desiring nothing but escape; his claws/ had been caught, he was trapped” (321-323, 32). The resolution to the story would be widely changed if evil were to win, no other more powerful good like Beowulf would step up to fight Grendel, leading Grendel to terrorize Herot forever. The ultimate battle between Good and Evil is what gave resolution to this story, Beowulf defeats Grendel allowing him to continue his legacy of being a hero. Without the theme of good versus evil, both Grendel and Beowulf would have no purpose and everything in Herot would remain peaceful, so it is essential to have good versus evil theme in this epic of Beowulf.
The philosophies expressed in the Beowulf epic complement the exploration of existentialism throughout the modern work, Grendel, by John Gardner. Both works portray different perspectives of the same story, involving the same characters; Beowulf, the ancient Anglo-Saxon hero who destroys Grendel, and Grendel, the monster who terrorizes Hrothgar’s hall. Beowulf and Grendel act as archetypes that explore humanity’s perception of the world. In the Anglo-Saxon epic, Beowulf and his companions represent good, and the monsters, including Grendel, represent evil. When Beowulf kills Grendel, the world is less evil, but since Beowulf’s companions die in the struggle, the world is also less good. Ultimately, the two forces of good and evil will destroy each other, but the story maintains that God will interfere and save mankind from destruction. In Gardner’s story, the progression of society begins when mankind creates a monster and then creates a hero to fight the monster. Once the greater power of the hero had been established, once the conflict’s resolution strengthened society’s power, than a greater monster developed ...
Since the beginning of time, fairy tales, stories and legends have shared a common theme where good and evil are played against each other. In the story of “Beowulf”, translated by, “Burton Raffel”, there is a hero who plays as a good character, and there is also a demon who rules the dark side. The hero Beowulf, agrees to take a journey to conquer the evil monster Grendel. But when Beowulf is trying to defeat the beast, Grendel fights back, causing integrity and generosity to vanish. The common theme in various tales like in Beowulf is, good vs. evil.
In times before printed books were common, stories and poems were passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. From such oral traditions come great epics such as England’s heroic epic, Beowulf. In Beowulf, the monster Grendel serves as the evil character acting against the poem’s hero, as shown by his unnatural strength, beast-like qualities, and alienation from society.
While the classic battle between good and evil forces is a major theme of the medieval epic Beowulf, one may question whether these good and evil forces are as black and white as they appear. Scholars such as Herbert G. Wright claim that “the dragon, like the giant Grendel, is an enemy of mankind, and the audience of Beowulf can have entertained no sympathy for either the one or the other” (Wright, 4). However, other scholars such as Andy Orchard disagree with this claim, and believe that there is “something deeply human about the ‘monsters’” (Orchard, 29). While Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon are indeed portrayed as evil and violent foes, there are parts within Beowulf that can also lead a reader to believe that the “monsters” may not be so monstrous after all. In fact, the author of Beowulf represents the “monsters” within the poem with a degree of moral ambivalence. This ambivalence ultimately evokes traces of sympathy in the reader for the plight of these “monster” figures, and blurs the fine line between good and evil within the poem.

Beowulf was written during the budding of Christianity in England, when it was newly forming. In the story there are obvious references to Christian rituals.
Grendel is the embodiment of all that is evil and dark. He is a descendant of Cain and like Cain is an outcast of society. He is doomed to roam in the shadows. He is always outside looking inside. He is an outside threat to the order of society and all that is good. His whole existence is grounded solely in the moral perversion to hate good simply because it is good.
“In my youth I engaged in many wars”, Beowulf boasts to his warriors, which is certainly true. Throughout his life, he faces many deadly foes, all of which he handily defeats, save one. His story focuses on the most challenging, as well as morally significant of foes, Grendel and the dragon. These creatures reveal much about society as well as Christian virtue at the time. Even after Grendel and the dragon are defeated physically, the two monsters pose a new threat to the hero on a higher plane. Beowulf is not only at risk of losing his life, but his humanity, virtue, and even spirituality.

In Grendel, John Gardner portrays Grendel as an intelligent being capable of rational thought as well as displaying outbursts of emotion. He portrays Grendel as a hurt individual and as a victim of oppression ostracized from civilization. The author of Beowulf portrays Grendel as the typical monster archetype as compared to John Gardner’s representation of Grendel as an outcast archetype.
Good and Evil- The entire poem of Beowulf deals with the battle of good verses evil, good being Beowulf, his followers, Hrothgar, and Hrothgar's people, and evil being Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon. In this poem the power of good overcomes all the evils, but not without the lose of life. These lives include that of Beowulf, Aeschere, and many of Hrothgar's people. The clashing of good and evil forces was the main method of creating interest and suspense in the poem.
