The concept of good against evil is relevant in today’s society because our actions define and reflect our morals. People constantly face the battle between making good and bad choices, and culture greatly influences our decision making. We are raised to establish right from wrong, good from evil. Our ability to recognize acts of evil and corruption is developed from our experiences in life and from the environment in which we are raised. In The Road, the boy and the man struggle to survive as they embark on a treacherous journey to the south, where they believe they will find warmth and safety. Their will to keep living in a dark, post-apocalyptic world symbolizes perseverance and determination, along with the idea of good through destruction. Cormac McCarthy was raised as Roman Catholic but doesn’t consider himself religious despite his writing containing religious references. The man and the boy struggle to live up to moral code and also question God as they live in a world where there is little to no life, “The pivotal questions at the heart of the grail narrative represent the idea that healing is found in an act of genuine compassion - thus illuminates the boy’s formulation of his moral code through a series of questions that never seem to receive the answers he needs.” (Cooper). They have to scavenge for food, warmth, shelter and protection which strengthens their doubt of God’s existence. There are various references to Christianity through biblical allusions and religious imagery. The man acknowledges God and feels anger towards him, “Are you there?’ he whispered. ‘Will I see you at last? Have you a neck by which to throttle you? Have you a heart? Damn you eternally have you a soul? Oh God, he whispered. Oh God.’” (McCarthy 10). The boy is presented as a divine, Christ-like figure through his actions which resemble those of God. In Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, the author makes various references to the Bible and to religion. Those references also can be compared on how they have changed the way of humans in real life. Along with how the boy maintains his innocence throughout this whole book even when he witnessed events that could’ve changed him. The man tried to the best of his abilities to preserve the innocence of the boy. Through all of the obstacles that they both faced, the man managed to keep the boy safe and even in his last moments he was sure that he taught his boy how to tell when people were good.

Over a six-month period, more than 26 million visitors from all over the world would flock to the fairgrounds to experience the rebuilt and vibrant city of Chicago. The 600-acre fairground would have housed 200 buildings that showcased new food, art, technology, and entertainment. Chicago became known as the White City, a place of freedom, grandeur, and security. But unbeknownst to fairgoers, there was a serial killer among them. While Dr. H.H. Holmes lured his innocent victims to his “Castle”, just blocks away architect Daniel Burnham built up the dream city of Chicago. Both these men operated at the same time in history, simply blocks apart, both creating legacies that carry to this day. Burnham and Holmes are two side of the coin of human nature. In “The Devil in White City” Erik Larson’s juxtaposition of Burnham and Holmes, and the Black City and the White City, contributes to the understanding of human nature, that one cannot be good without having done evil, and that good and evil are viewed as complementary in their mutual dependence.
The battle of good versus evil is present in all aspects of life. Actions taken by people can determine how others view them. Some choose to do what is right and good, while others choose what is wrong and evil. Many characters are forced to choose between the two, and some do not foresee the consequences of their actions. In the book Peace Like a River by Leif Enger, actions committed by the Davy, Jeremiah, and Jeremiah’s friends, both good and evil, always have consequences.

In a young boy’s life, making the morally right choice can be difficult especially when the choice goes against someone that is suppose to be respected, such as a parent. “Barn Burning” by William Faulkner is a coming of age story about a son of a poor and evil sharecropper. Showing the difference between good and evil, Faulkner uses character descriptions and plot, revealing Sarty’s struggles’s as he chooses between making the morally right decision or to be loyal to a dishonest father.

It is established that the public (majority) is hazardous to the two protagonist of the novel. The father and son are forced to kill or be killed. By thrusting the father and son into a world with their actions are predicated by the actions of the public, McCarthy is attempting to illustrate the significant influence one’s environment has on an individual. Of course this was before he became famous. His lifestyle was hotel to hotel. One time he got thrown out of a $40 dollar a month hotel and even became homeless. This is a man who from experience knows what should be appreciated. McCarthy published a novel that would give readers just that message called The Road. Placed in a world of poverty the story is about a man and his son. They travel to a warmer place in hopes of finding something more than the scattered decomposing bodies and ashes. The father and son face hunger, death, and distrust on their long journey. 15 year old Lawrence King was shot for being gay. Known as a common hate crime, the murderer obviously thought he was more superior to keep his life and to take someone’s life. Believing ideas in a possible accepting world with no conditions is dangerous thought to that person’s immunity to the facts of reality.

The novel begins in media res, meaning in the middle of things. Because the plot isn’t typically panned out, the reader is left feeling similar to the characters: weary, wondering where the end is, and what is going to happen. McCarthy ensures the language is minimalistic throughout, illustrating the bleak nature of the post-apocalyptic setting and showing the detachment that the characters have from any sort of civilisation. Vivid imagery is important in The Road, to construct a portrait in the reader's mind that is filled with hopelessness, convincing us to accept that daily survival is the only practical option. In Cormac McCarthy’s Sci-Fi novel, “The Road”, two mysterious people, a father and his curious son, contact survival of the fittest during tragic apocalyptic times. With a shopping cart of food and supplies, they excavate into the remains of tattered houses, torn buildings and other sheltering places, while averting from troublesome communes. In the duration of the novel, they’re plagued with sickness that temporarily unable them to proceed onward. Due to the inopportune events occurring before the apocalypse, the wife of the son and father committed suicide due to these anonymous survivors lurking the remains of earth. The last people on earth could be the ‘bad guys’ as the young boy describes them. In page 47, the wife reacted to this, stating, “Sooner or later they will catch us and they will kill us. They will rape me. They'll rape him. They are going to rape us and kill us and eat us and you won't face it. You'd rather wait for it to happen. But I can't.”
Everyone has their own different opinion of how they want to interpret religion, but there are always some common things that can be picked out from any religion and that is the image of a prophet or a Messianic figure. That can be seen in McCarthy’s book that the boy is seen in the image of a Messiah, because he has been kept pure throughout all of the havoc that has happened. There was an instance when the father was looking at the boy and he thought: “Then he just sat there holding his binoculars and watching the ashen daylight congeal over the land. He knew only that the child was his warrant. He said: if he is not the word of God God never spoke” (McCarthy 5). What can be taken from that part is that it is uncertain if the boy believes in God, but it is certain without a doubt that the man does. He believes that the boy could be a symbol of holiness. Shelly Rambo asks the question of, “how are we to interpret this language within the context of a world that bas collapsed? The context is critical here. How do we read images such as the breath of God and the Messianic references to the boy after the end of the world?” (Rambo 104). Like stated before, everyone will have their own interpretation of what is said in this book.
