At the lowland Atlantic Forest of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, lives a charismatic and tree-dwelling monkey known as the Golden Lion Tamarin, Leontopithecus rosalia. The Golden Lion Tamarin is a particular species of Lion Tamarins and were given this name due to their brightly coloured orange or red fur covering their entire bodies (Tzoo). A beautiful golden hair frames its dark and hairless face (WAZA). Golden Lion Tamarins can be distinguished from other species of primates by having two molar teeth on either side of each jaw as opposed to three and by their modified claws, rather than nails, on all digits except their big toe (IUCN). With a body and head length of about 200 to 336 mm, a tail length of 315 to 400 mm, and weighing approximately 361 to 794 grams, the Golden Lion Tamarin is considered one of the …show more content…
smallest New World primates (TZoo). This species of primates are also very social, usually found in groups of 2 to 8 individuals (WAZA). These groups defend home ranges of 40 to over 100 hectares, depending on the distribution and availability of food (IUCN). The Golden Lion Tamarins communicate with each other using a variety of different vocalizations including shrills, whistle, whines, clucks, chirring, and descending trills (Tzoo). The individuals of this species do not exhibit sexual dimorphism, the males and the females do not appear physically very different from one another (TZoo).
Typically the males reach the age of sexual maturity at about 24 months, while the females reach sexual maturity at around 18 months of age (TZoo). The Golden Lion Tamarins are seasonal breeders and at each particular breeding season, only one female per group will breed (Tzoo). On average, Golden Lion Tamarins give birth to twins 78% of the time, usually occurring between September and March, which is also another distinguishing feature of this species (WAZA). A couple days after birth, the new born tamarin will be carried on their fathers back, while returning to their mother every few hours in order to feed (Tzoo). They are a primarily omnivore species consuming fruits, flowers, nectar, and plant exudates, however they also consume some animal preys including frogs, snails, lizards, spiders, and insects (IUCN). The Golden Lion Tamarins live an arboreal lifestyle, spending their days leaping from branch to branch with exceptional agility, and sleeping at night in tree holes or vines
(Tzoo). The centre of the range of this species of Lion Tamarins is the basin of the Rio São João, in Rio de Janeiro (IUCN). Coimbra-Filho and Mittermeier were the first to clarify the original distribution of these species which covered the majority of the lowland coastal region of the state of Rio de Janeiro, below 300 m above sea level (IUCN). The original distribution of this species included in total 24 municipalities, however Coimbra-Filho carried out surveys between 1962 and 1969 and concluded that the Golden Lion Tamarins were extinct in all but seven of the original 24 municipalities, which led to many studies to discover what was happening to this charismatic species (IUCN).
I observed chimpanzees in the Kimberly-Clark Chimpanzee Forest exhibit at the Dallas zoo. These African apes, like humans, are hominoids and fall into the larger category of catarrhines. Their scientific classification is Pan troglodytes. There were about ten chimpanzees in that habitat. Most of them were grown adults, except two children. They were robust and had black fur. The average weight of the chimps was listed on a display to be about 115 pounds.
I visited the Sacramento Zoo during the afternoon of April 21, 2017. The weather was wonderful, sunny, warm, and there was a slight breeze. It got a bit more breezy the longer I was there. Visiting the zoo to observe primates allowed me to become a little more aware of how primatologists study primates. Even though I’ve been to many different zoos several different times, I never realized how many primates were associated with the zoos, as well as the variety of primates in the zoos. The Sacramento Zoo has eight different primates, all in different classifications, superfamilies, or subfamilies. While observing the Chimpanzees, White-Handed Gibbon, Mongoose Lemur, White-Faced Saki, and the Wolf’s Guenon I could see the differences
The animal I chose to make a habitat for is the cotton-top tamarin. From my knowledge, I was able to make judicious choices that would suit a cotton-top tamarin’s likes and dislikes. Zoo exhibits already are equipped with supplies tamarins need. But the picture I drew is how I think a habitat for a cotton-top tamarin should be in a zoo exhibit. Cotton-top tamarin is a SSP (Species Survival Plan) animal who’s critically endangered animal due to deforestation and wildlife trafficking. These animals are supposedly ideal captive animals, but they really aren’t and they shouldn’t be.
From a far distance I was able to see the largest of the primates, Gorillas. The gorillas at the
As celebrities stand distinctively among the masses and cast out their halos of personality charm and strong suits of skilled abilities, the controversies about them are unavoidable shadows created from their fame. With the popularization of celebrity culture, information synchronization, and communication technology, their lives are publicly exposed and various forms of media (depending on eras) record their flaws. Tough information transmitted to audiences are frequently biased, evidences of objective reality remains, even in the remote past.
I am an unofficial member of the "Krewe Of Will Travel For Food". I should have a card that I keep in my wallet and a magnet that I'm able to attach to my car. I've traveled to New Orleans for lunch, Ruston for a sandwich, and now Toledo Bend as an excuse to stop in Zwolle for some tamales.
The mountain gorilla was first discovered roaming the Virunga Volcanoes in Rwanda (von Beringe, 2002, p.9). German Captain Robert von Beringe and his African soldiers stumbled upon two mountain gorillas around the volcanic region on October 17, 1902 (von Beringe, 2002, p.9). Von Beringe captured and killed one of them and sent the body to the Zoological Museum in Berlin, Germany. Professor Paul Matschie, who worked with the museum, identified the gorilla as a new class and named it after its founder: Gorilla beringei beringei (von Beringe, 2002, p.10). Twenty-three years later, American naturalist Carl Akeley persuaded King Albert of Belgium to turn a Belgian trust territory, near Rwanda, into a national park for the conservation of mountain gorillas.
Lions have relatively short-legged, long, muscular bodies and large heads. The male grows on average to 1.7 to 2.5 m (5.6 to 8.2 ft) long, not including the tail, which is 90 to 105 cm (36 to 41 in) in length. It stands 1.23 m (4 ft) high at the shoulder, and it weighs 150 to 250 kg (330 to 550 lb). The mane, which covers the head and neck, sometimes extends to the shoulders and belly. The mane will vary in color and length; well-fed, healthy lions have longer, fuller manes. Females are smaller but equally muscular. Lions vary in color from golden to brown. The mane of a male lion will vary from black to yellow. Both sexes have retractable claws to keep them sharp when they are needed. Lions have wide powerful jaws. The lions roar, which can be heard by humans up to 9 (5.6 miles) kilometers away, is usually uttered before the animals hunt in the evening, after a successful hunt, and again in the early morning.

As was learned throughout the semester, although most primates have the same, general primitive traits, such as opposable thumbs or stereoscopic vision, there are still quite a bit of differences amongst the different species, especially in regards to those who fall under the categories of New World (platyrrhines) and Old World monkeys (catarrhines). For the most part, New World monkeys, such as the Golden Headed Lion Tamarins, have “flat noses” with nostrils facing sideways as well as prehensile tails that are usually used as a fifth leg and facilitate their life on the trees. As for Old World monkeys, however, these monkeys, such as the Francois’ Langurs, have “narrow” noses with downward facing nostrils and lack a grasping tail. Therefore,
The fur of the Siberian tiger is long, thick and yellow with dark black stripes running through it. The coat of this animal is reddish colored in the summer months. The underside of the Siberian tiger is bright white, and the tail area is white and black.
The focus of this essay will be the Black-capped squirrel monkey which is mainly distinguished from other species of squirrel monkeys by the more rounded arch of white fur above its eyes. This feature is referred to as Roman type; the arch of other squirrel monkey species is Gothic type, meaning their arch is more pointed and dramatic (Zimbler-DeLorenzo and Stone, 2011). Taxonomic Classification Order Primates Semiorder Haplorrhini Suborder Anthropoidea Infraorder Platyrrhini Superfamily Ceboidea Family Cebidea Subfamily Cebinea Genus Saimiri (Fleagle, 2013)
Giraffes are some of the biggest animals in the world they can grow up to 18 ft tall!
Before current knowledge of mountain lion activity had been researched, it was commonly believed that mountain lions were ferocious killers which crept down from the mountains to indulge in midnight feasts on livestock and pets. Of course, the worst harbored fear was the possibility of losing children, family and friends to these wild predators. Besides the past 25 years, little concern was given to the condition of mountain lion populations in California and much of the western United States. Between 1916 and 1971, more than 12,000 mountain lions were killed for bounties and for sport in California (California Wildlife Protection Coalition, 1995).
