‘We must not look at goblin men’: Sensuous experience and religious vision in Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market"
Christina Rossetti's, 'Goblin Market' is one of the most controversial poems of it's time. Although she insisted it was meant to be seen as a childrens fairytale, many readers have interpreted it as an erotic poem, many seeing it as a warning for young women against the temptations of sex. The poem has many hidden inuendos. For example the Goblin's describe the fruit in a sensual way, “Plump unpecked cherries” (line 7). Cherries are seen as a sign of virtue so this a clear example of a sexual situation. There is also a very strong religious theme in this poem. The fruit the goblin merchants are offering is a very clear symbol of Adam and Eve and the forbidden fruit. “Obviously the conscious or semi-conscious allegorial intention of this narrative poem is sexual/religious.” (Gilbert and Gubar, 566). This essay will discuss the theme of sensuous experience in terms of what makes this poem erotic, female sexuality and it also aims to discuss the religious symbolism in Rossetti's, 'Goblin Market'.
Rosetti challenges the traditional patriarchal perception of victorian womenin terms of sexuality and education. She recognises that the ideologies of her time were wrong and needed to be reslolved. She used the “Goblin Market” to challenge this and also as a warnign against men and tempting sexual situtations. Many women gave into these temptations and became 'fallen women'. Jeanie may have had a husband lined up and would have led the ideal Victorian life, but she fell victim to her own temptations. She indulged in the Goblin men's fruit and lost everything, she became ill and died, “But who for joys brides hope to have, Fell sick and died, In her gay prime” (line 314-316). Jeanie lost everything all because she gave into a tempting situtation, she lost everything and ultimately lost her life.

In her poems Christina Rossetti references the loss of innocence stemming from premarital sexual encounters. In both the poems “An Apple Gathering” and “Cousin Kate”, Rossetti tells stories of women who lost their purity before marriage, and therefore deemed outcasts of society. These acts of dalliance exhibit how the loss of innocence can affect a Victorian woman’s life. Each poem begins with the introduction of the women who pursued physical relationships, followed by their abandonment by men, and thus, living their lives as outcasts.
In Christina Rossetti’s narrative poem” Goblin Market”, two sisters, Laura and Lizzie were enchanted by glorious calls from the goblin that were directed towards young innocent maidens, “Come by come by.” The sisters knew not to take the fruit from the Goblins because they were eerie as to where the fruit came from. However, Laura feel for the tempting calls of the Goblin men. It could be argued that Laura accepted the fruit because of her curiosity in the Goblin men created Laura’s desire to indulge herself into something she has yet to experience. Laura had a yearning for sexual temptation because of the tempting calls from the Goblins.
Since Rossetti wrote this poem in a time period that often looked down upon independent women, the lack of a male heroic figure and the addition of a selfless, sisterly relationship give this poem its distinctive, progressive qualities. ...re cautious look at "Goblin Market" shows that the poetry is pretty complicated, and able to back up a more innovative studying than the ones put forth above. Rather than saying that "Goblin Market" has a particular concept, I would put forth the idea that it efforts to cope with certain issues Rossetti identified within the cannon of British literary works, and particularly with the issue of how to create a women idol.
In "Preparatives to Love: Seduction as Fiction in the Works of Eliza Haywood", Ros Ballaster critically examines the active role that seduction plays in the passionate lives of the heroines presented in the writing of "the undisputed Queen of Romance," Eliza Haywood. Ros Ballaster's primary argument refers to Eliza Haywood's "creation of a specifically feminine authorial persona with a direct address to female readers, which is seen both as a form of scandalous prostitution and a seduction of other women." (53) Ballaster asserts that, though her work undergoes a well-defined stylistic change, related to the moral perspective of her career after 1740, "throughout her work there is a remarkable consistency in her presentation of sexual desire and in her view of fiction's role in the stimulation or repression of sexual passion in female readers." (55)

Federico García Lorca’s poem “La casada infiel” depicts the story of a gypsy who makes love to a married woman on the shore of a river. When looking deeper into the poem, Lorca appears to provide a critical observation on the values of the conservative society at the time in which he lived. The woman, at her most basic reading, is treated as an object, elaborating on the sexist values in society at the time. Lorca addresses issues of sexism as well as issues of sexuality within society mainly through the poem’s sexist narrative voice, objectification of the female character and overriding sense of a lack of desire throughout the poem. His achievement to do so will be analysed throughout this commentary with particular attention to Lorca’s use of poetic techniques such as diction, personification and imagery.

This essay will attempt to discuss the two gothic tales ‘Carmilla’ and ‘Dracula’ in relation to cultural contexts in which they exist as being presented to the reader through the gender behaviour and sexuality that is portrayed through the texts. Vampire stories always seem to involve some aspect of sexuality and power.
The poets integrated ?metaphysical conceits? as focal parts of these poems. Along with these, they used effective language as a basis for their convincing arguments, they included subjects of periodical importance (e.g. ?courtship? and ?religion?), and use very clever structures that are manipulated in order to make the poem read in the desired way. The very clear indication of the theme in question was strongly aided by the way in which the personas portrayed the emotions they felt and the way they showed their attitudes towards the subject. Considering all these factors, the poets made critical arguments to the mistresses in order to alter their views, thus changing their minds, on denying the poets the sex that they desired so strongly.
There were two principle views concerning imagination, the Victorians and the Romantics, who didn’t accept each other’s ideas about imagination. But, despite their clashes on the status and views of imagination, the Romantics and Victorians share similar ideas through different angles of perspective, which we could assume are linked in part to their era. The long poem, named Goblin Market, written by Christina Rossetti shows the contrast between the ideas of Romanticism and the Victorian image of imagination while utilizing the same motifs. Goblin Market centralizes its theme on the Victorian approach towards Imagination as being a destructive, alien force that leads to grave and fatal consequences. Nature is seen as a demonic force that leads to death, as well as the clear distinction of the imaginative creatures, consisting of the goblins, being portrayed as satanic and evil. In addition, throughout this tale we see how the imagination is constantly blamed for leading to unfortunate situations, while the Romantics would consider the imagination to be doing the person good even if it leads the person astray on a path of death and destruction. Thus, Rossetti’s text demonstrates the Imagination having satanic nature, which portrays imagination as intoxicating and deadly. Also, the author displays her disapproval of nature by demonstrating Laura’s rejection of nature as her enlightenment, whereas the Romantics would do otherwise. Christina Rosetti’s poem “Goblin Market” has elements of Christianity and sexuality; however, the Christian elements outweigh and are more influential than the sexual elements.
Rossetti’s use of repetition emphasizes the idea that the artist is able to set expectations for women by controlling who they are, what they do, and what they feel by recreating them through art. Sex is a misconstrued theme in this poem and is just a misinterpreted fairy tale. Strictly speaking, it is not intelligent to assume that eating fruit at the Goblins Market is the equivalence to having sex with the goblin men. The impression of a "Goblin Market" is a woman’s perspective of their ideal type of world. In the poem we never get acquainted with any “real” men in the tale and the only accusation that a real man does exist in the work is in the end when it says that Laura and Lizzie become “wives” (Line 544). That is the only instance that we hear of a man’s existence in the poem. This poem shows how literature can compose of a fantasy for women directly from men.
