Genetic modification has been around since the early 12,000 BC, when humans started domesticating organisms. Genetic modification also known as, Genetic Engineering is The process of manipulating genes for practical purposes. Modern Genetic modification started in the early 1970’s and since then people have been genetically modifying organisms, from fruits to animals. An organism that has been genetically modified is GloFish. GloFish is a patented and trademarked fluorescent fish. In the late 1990’s, A doctor from the National University of Singapore, Dr Zhiyuan Gong and associates worked with a gene that is able to encode a green fluorescent protein (GFP). The GFP is extracted from a jellyfish, which produced a bright green fluorescence. Later, they injected that gene into the embryo of a zebrafish, causing the fish to be fluorescent under white light and ultraviolet light. The purpose for doing this was to generate a fish that could detect pollection by fluorescing environmental toxins selectively. After, Dr Gong also developed a line …show more content…

A company called Center for Genomic Gastronomy launched, “Glowing Sushi Cooking Show” where they make sushi using GloFish. Before doing that, they made ample research and is found that GloFish is safe to consume. GloFish should be fed with a high quality flake food. Also, if the fish is given clean water, a tank mate, and a high quality diet, the fish can live up to two to four years; average life span of three and a half years. There are several GloFish pros and cons. A pro is that this is safe for anyone to own as a pet and it is not expensive. Taking care of the glofish is very easy as well. The cons of this is that if this GM fish was to be released into the wild, they might not survive cold temperatures. They can be easily be seen by preys and Breeding with other fish could weaken progeny and negatively affect the native fish species and future
