Globalizing Politics Globalization affects almost every aspect of life for the citizens in the Mayor’s city. With respect to globalization, my area of expertise is the role globalization plays in our town’s economy. I will focus on will be the economic benefits our city would undergo if we opened our cities for new companies. Economic globalization can be defined as the “Intensification and stretching of global economic connections throughout the globe.”(Steger 9). However, even though our local economy would be improved there are also many drawbacks that hurt our citizens. This could damage the self-sufficient mentality that our cities members have developed over the years, due to the large amount of immigrants coming in. This could potentially lead to a loss in our regions heritage and individuality, which would eventually turn our city into a global melting pot. The boost in economic output is key for our town, but the side effects need to be fully evaluated to see if the positives outweigh the negatives for our community. The country has been struggling with poverty and other problems that are caused by their lack of wealth. In Sierra Leone, the UN estimates that “ Gross National income per capita in Sierra Leone stands at $340.” (Akam 265) This has led to a multitude of problems for their citizens. In fact, during childbirth, one in eight women die during childbirth. This is a result of the insufficient medical care that the country cannot improve. They are also not able to properly care for the road; almost all of the roads are in poor condition. Even the roads from aid projects are no longer functioning, most bridges are poorly built wooden planks.
