When discussing the topic of global health disparities, there are many factors that cause these major problems. Firstly, the major categories of these causes are broken into five major sections. These sections are socioeconomic status, biological factors, personal factors, culture, and environment. The reasoning behind these major categories is because there are many factors within these categories that affect global health disparities in general. Within the realm of socioeconomic status; income levels, education levels, and occupation all effect global health disparities. Income level refers to low and middle income countries. Most global health disparities occur within low and middle income countries. This is because the countries cannot …show more content…
Exercise and diet are both aspects that affect each other. Poor diet and exercise can lead to obesity, malnutrition, and a number of other problems. Within low and middle income countries, obesity is not necessarily a problem, however poor diet choices lead to malnutrition. Poor diet and malnutrition in mothers affect their children. Low birth weight, birth defects, and other issues arise from malnourished mothers, and often their children struggle with malnutrition after they are born. This starts a vicious cycle called the cycle of malnutrition. Health behaviors such as substance abuse and unprotected sex also contribute to global health disparities. These behaviors can lead to many fatal diseases and infections including lung cancer, cervical cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, heart disease, etc. Unprotected sex among the heterosexual community is also a major issue because of the spread of HIV/AIDS. Sexual orientation can contribute to global health disparities for this reason. There are many other factors within the web of causation that affect personal behaviors. Weight, ethnicity, gender, religion and social norms are all factors that affect personal …show more content…
The five categories include the largest causes of global health disparities and are comprised of different contributing factors. The reason behind breaking down socioeconomic status into income, education, and occupation is because those three components comprise the definition of socioeconomic status. The purpose for using ethnicity, gender, weight, and age as genetic factors that contribute to global health disparities is to show these genetic factors are not changed by any factor, but they change many factors and outcomes when analyzed. Personal behaviors is comprised of exercise, diet, sexual orientation, and health behaviors because these are all based on choice. Culture has been broken down into religion and social norms because culture is comprised of personal beliefs and practices. This definition directly describes both religion and social norms. Where environment is concerned, there are many factors that influence environment. Location, water and air quality, infrastructure, and government policy are the main subcategories that are used to explain how environment contributes to global health disparities. Many of the global health disparities that stem from environmental factors often fall in one of these groups. In order to cover the
According to the World Health Organisation (2017) the social determinants of health are defined as the conditions where people are born, grown, work and live, which also includes the health system. The social determinants of health determined populations health’s outcomes and therefore linked with health inequalities (WHO, 2017)
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are increasingly becoming a major problem of Public Health around the World. The impact of resources and material deprivation among people and populations has resulted in an increase in mortality rate on a planetary scale. Social determinants of health are defined as the personal, social, economic and the environmental conditions which determines the health status of an individual or population (Gardner, 2013). Today’s society is characterized by inequalities in health, education, income and many other factors which as a result is becoming a burden for Public Health around the world. Research studies have shown that the conditions in which people live and work strongly influenced their health. Individuals with high levels of education and fall within the high income bracket turn to have stable jobs, live in the best neighborhood and have access to quality health care system than individuals who have low education and fall with the low income bracket. This paper is to explain different social determinants of health and how they play ...

Wilkinson, R. M. (2003). Social determinants of health - the solid facts. [S.l.]: World Health Organization.
Culture plays a key role in the quality of healthcare or health insurance services offered to patients. Disparities are ethnic or racial differences in the quality of healthcare. Ethnic or racial minorities tend to receive poor quality healthcare services compared to the majority ethnic group.
Social determinants of health have attracted the attention of governments, policy makers and international health organisations over the last three decades (Hankivsky & Christoffersen 2008). This is because social conditions which people are born in, live and work play an important role in their health outcomes (WHO 2015). According to Kibesh (1200) social determinants drive health disparities, disrupts the human developmental process and undermine the quality of life and opportunities for people and families (ref). Thus, several theories have been developed over the years to provide in-depth understanding of the social determinants of health and to reduce health inequalities (Hankivsky & Christoffersen, 2008). However, there is still significant
Wilkinson, R.G. & Marmot, M.G. 2003, Social determinants of health: the solid facts, World Health Organization.
Social determinants of health has been a large topic for many years and can have a positive and negative effect on individuals, families and communities. (World Health Organisation, 2009) The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels, which are themselves influenced by policy choices. Social determinants have many factors and in this essay education will be the main social determinant of health discussed and how this could have an impact on the physical and mental sides of health.
Disparities in cancer are caused by the complex interaction of low economic status, culture, and social injustice, with poverty playing the dominant role (Freeman, 2004). So I ask the question: Does socioeconomics impact a man’s prostate health?
Socioeconomic Disparities and health are growing at a rapid rate throughout the United States of America. To further understand the meaning of Socioeconomic Disparities, Health and Socioeconomic disparities & health, this essay will assist in providing evidence. Disparities can be defined in many ways, of which include ethnic and racial background and class types that deal with it the most. Due to the low income some individuals receive, they have less access to health care and are at risk for major health issues. Although, ethnicity and socioeconomic status should not determine the level of health care one should receive or whether not the individual receives healthcare.
Over the years, the social determinants of health (SDOH) have been receiving more attention due to its importance in determining peoples’ health access, health quality and health outcome. The social determinants of health have been described by various scholars as the situation or environmental condition in which people are born, or where they grow, live and work; unfortunately these conditions have continued to affect and determine people’s ability to access proper care.1-5 In other words, the SDOH continues to consciously and unconsciously influence people’s access to most opportunities in life including access to healthcare services both in developed and developing countries.2 This issues have continue to deteriorate in most developing countries increasing people’s susceptibility to multi-morbidity among different age groups, with a slight increase among the elderly.6
This includes, but is not limited to, race, gender, socioeconomic status, education, geographical location, early childhood development, occupation, and social support. Social determinants are classified, specifically, as fixed or variable. This ultimately means that one’s classified “social determinant” is either something that is unable to be changed or is something that is able to be altered. Therefore, there are some social determinants for which the individual has a choice on whether or not their actions are controlled by those specific facets of themselves. For example, some social determinants for which an individual has no choice includes their race/ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status (or more specifically, the socioeconomic status for which you are born to), and early childhood development. Compared to other social determinants, these are factors to every individual that we are unable to change, due to the fact that these specific characteristics are traits that we are born with. Although some of these determinants are able to be changed, the health implications that are connected to these factors will continue to alter and change the individual’s life. For instance, there are specific health issues that affect more individuals in a specific race or gender compared to another social group, ultimately altering the individual’s health. Also, socioeconomic status is linked to many
In the operation of the healthcare system, gender plays a central role. Gender discrimination in the healthcare exists either in the field of education, workplace or while attending to the patients. Interestingly, as opposed to other areas where discrimination lies heavily to a particular gender; gender inequality in health happens to both women and men. Gender inequality in the health care service negatively affects the quality of care given and perpetuates patient biases to a gender. Also, the gender disparities in the field of health assists researchers and practitioners to study conditions and their probable manifestations within both sexes.
There are three elements under environment, which are physical, psycho-social, and economic. Health issues do and can arise from environmental factors. Those living in a third world country have limited access to hospitals and care. Despite the age, young or old, people lose their lives because they didn’t have the resources to help them. And in the other hand, those that live in a country where they have access to hospitals and care,
