It is a commitment to improving and protecting the world, of preserving the present to ensure there will be a future. It is not for the benefit of those who are living now; sustainability is for our children, our grandchildren, and the generations that follow in their footsteps- others who deserve a world and future just as much as we do. Deeply rooted in sustainability is the importance of being a global citizen.

Appalachian’s numerous options for global learning, such as international education abroad and at home, international research, and global connection opportunities create the possibility for greater insight into the world, through an in-depth view of what is currently occurring globally. Rather than hear from second-hand accounts, these programs allow students to experience foreign nations, issues, and events for themselves. This not only improves a student’s own understanding of the world, but also the relationship between America and other countries. With more positive interactions and movements towards understanding, the stronger our global connections will become. Traveling, researching, and speaking to citizens of other countries allows bridges of communication, friendship, and support to grow and strengthen. This enhances the ability of all students to become engaged global citizens, as they will know how to think and act globally to best make a difference in the
Many people with the term sustainability and have the misconception that environmentalism and sustainability portray the same idea. Although the tree metaphor is an example of nature, the government works in a similar way in terms of economy and society, as it does with the environment. All three pillars of sustainability are the foundations to a successful nation. Likewise, the three roots of the tree must balance to continue to preserve and grow. Overall, sustainability is a crucial concept as it governs all the things we need for our survival and nourishing values. It is how we use our already scarce resources to balance the economy, environment, and society effectively and thrive in the growing

...blems are growing in magnitude and will neither go away nor resolve themselves. They require action by having students be trained and willing to deal with difficult and complex global issues. Students should have a degree of literacy regarding the global problems, issues, concerns, and trends that increasingly impact their lives. Through awareness students will know and understand that global issues and challenges exist and affect their lives. Awareness is a necessary prerequisite to understanding. Students will be aware that their information and knowledge on most global issues are incomplete and that they need to continue seeking information about how global and international issues are formed and influenced. Global education is a lifelong process. New global issues will emerge in the future, and new insights into current global challenges will be generated.
“A global citizen is someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this community’s values and practices.” According to Global Citizens Initiative, a nonprofit global social enterprise, this is what it means to be a global gitizen. It is necessary to understand the defining factors of a global citizen in order to understand Johansson Dahre’s quarrels about the human rights discussion. Dahre argues that there is no middle ground between universalism and cultural relativism. Thorough analysis and critique of this dichotomy manifests a divergent human rights theory, Relative universalism. Dahre’s suggestion that Relative universalism
Sustainability is when something can be used and not be depleted, destroyed, or damaged past recovery. As we work to live sustainably, we are in effect making use of our resources in a fashion that doesn't eliminate them, and doesn't harm their source. Our resources come from the environment around us and we need to make sure that it is not harmed as we use it. According to the EPA, sustainability stems from a single principle that "Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment” (Sustainability Information). Considering this, it's obvious why we need to make sure we live sustainably and do not damage the source of our resources, our environment.
Global problems require global solutions. They also require World Citizens who identify with and give their loyalty to humanity and the web of life. Patriotism takes on new dimensions and becomes Humatriotism, loyalty to humankind. To change the world requires a new kind of thinking and new loyalties that transcend the nation-state. These viewpoints may put one at odds with some segments of society, but if some individuals do not have the vision and the courage to venture beyond the borders of conformity then change will never occur.

Sustainability is a concept with a diverse array of meanings and definitions – a widely used glamorous, ambiguous, ambivalent and vague concept that is used by different stakeholder groups in various ways. In class we discussed what sustainable development meant to us; each group had its own definition. Our group’s definition was that sustainable development is for the long term for future generations, for the basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and job. The basic will increase over time and our resources will diminish, which why sustainable development is important. Sustainable development is important for future generations so that they end up with a world better than ours. Sustainable development is achievable if society works together to meet everyone’s basic needs and create a better world.
Sustainable development means that the present generations should be able to make use of resources to live better lives in such a manner that it doesn’t compromise the ability of future generations to survive and make better lives for themselves as well. For sustainable development to occur, there needs to be sustainable economic, ecological and community development. Society needs to be educated about ways in which they can use resources, especially natural, in such a manner that it doesn’t cause harm to the environment and put future generations lives at risk.
We cannot stop the phenomenon of globalization due to strong interdependence of our lives on those things which are a product of globalization. It has complicated the process of education but has also created many opportunities for countries to break out of the traditional models of education. Cultural diversity can be strengthened through globalization by providing means and resources to support cultural groups attempting to make a difference in society while maintaining their distinctive set of values and
