For this essay I will be writing on the prompt “invent an “art backstory” for three objects, events, or other phenomena that were previously not categorized as art”. The pieces I will be writing back stories on are “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Johannes Vermeer, “The Kiss” by Gustav Klimt, and “Cafe Terrace at Night” by Vincent Van Gogh. The first piece I will be writing about is “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. The backstory on this piece is complicated. The girl in the painting is the artist's ex lover. She is a blonde, small, 23 year old young lady. She was born in Germany, but her family moved to France when she was only 3 years old. Her name is Adelene. She met the artist when she was only 16. Their romance was forbidden because he was 24 years old. The big age gap was looked down upon by not only her family, but their small town as well. None of that stopped their love from blossoming. She was his muse. One dark and rainy night she was driving home with him, when suddenly the car was struck. Her memory was completely ruined. Every memory she had with him was lost and he knew he couldn’t see her again. He had to leave her alone and keep their love a secret to himself. The backstory on this piece is quite simple. A man and woman fell in love when they were really young. Their love started out on fire. They were in the “honeymoon” phase for years. Suddenly, all that started to change. The woman began to feel suffocated by the man’s love. She wanted to escape. She no longer felt the passion and desire for him that she once had. This is depicted in the painting by the man straining his neck to kiss her while she pulls away and looks uncomfortable. After all they had been through she felt trapped in their relationship and like she couldn’t get out. This is represented by the blanket in the painting that is wrapped around and confining
The speaker’s rocky encounter with her ex-lover is captured through personification, diction, and tone. Overall, the poem recaps the inner conflicts that the speak endures while speaking to her ex-lover. She ponders through stages of the past and present. Memories of how they were together and the present and how she feels about him. Never once did she broadcast her emotions towards him, demonstrating the strong facade on the outside, but the crumbling structure on the inside.

"The man is torn between two spaces, each inhabited by a woman. The inside beckons with its comfortable domesticity; the outside calls the promise of a strange and forbidden passion." The fact that the husband's struggle to commit to the murder of his wife occurs on open and calm water indicates that the situation can go either way. He is in the middle of his two choices emotionally and physically, being in between the city and his home. The husband begins to paddle with force and anxiousness to the land where he receives his desired encounter with a strange and forbidden passion, just not with the woman of which he thought.
The composition of this painting forces the eye to the woman, and specifically to her face. Although the white wedding dress is large and takes up most of the woman’s figure, the white contrasts with her face and dark hair, forcing the viewer to look more closely into the woman’s face. She smokes a cigarette and rests her chin on her hands. She does not appear to be a very young woman and her eyes are cast down and seem sad. In general, her face appears to show a sense of disillusionment with life and specifically with her own life. Although this is apparently her wedding day, she does not seem to be happy.
When you put all these aspects put together with my interpretation of what is happening in the painting, a sense of calmness and security was constructed for me. No matter what this couple may be going through at the end of the day they still lean on each other for support. The narrator identifies the figure to be a woman, and realizes “at night, in any kind of light…it becomes bars! The outside pattern I mean, and the woman behind it is as plain as can be” (). At this point, she can create a relationship to the “woman” based off the similarities they share with each other, such as how they both are trapped by this wallpaper. They are both forcibly immobilized, and the lack of movement and interaction is driving the narrator past her breaking point to where she can connect to a person in the wallpaper that surrounds the room. The author uses the growing relationship to uncover her opinion about the rest cure which is that the choice of leaving the patient to lay and rest for such long periods of time will create a feeling of being trapped, and when trapped, the mind can go to rot just by baking in its own thoughts and fantasies. It is a remedy for insanity, and an outcome such as that would hold contrary to the expectations of this treatment. At the final moment of the story, just as the treatment comes to a close, we see the narrator reach her breaking point. She rips down the wallpaper and exclaims “I’ve got out at last” to her terrified husband as she “creeps” around the room (). The trapped
Although their love has endured through many years, it has come to an end in the story. All throughout the story the couple is reminiscing about their life and while they are there are some odd details that are strewn throughout.
This quote proves the societal repression of women by using the figure in the wallpaper as a symbol of the main character, trying to escape the pattern of her daily life. She is beginning to see that what is making her depressed is having no control over her own life, she is trapped in the routine of being controlled by her husband. This quote is also an example of societal repression of women because she wants to get out of her life, get out of the room, and away from the wallpaper. The author included her change of view of the wallpaper at night in the moonlight as a way to show that when John isn’t paying attention she sees the flaws in him and her life, and realizes how much she would like to be free. She notices that there is someone trapped in the wallpaper and she later tries to help it escape, which symbolizes her escaping her pattern and encourages more women of her time to escape as well. The author used symbolism in order for the reader to understand how unhappy the women is with her role and expectations in her daily life. The background of the painting is dark with hues of browns and reds. Light enters the painting from the left and can be seen on the tiled floor. The lighting helps to create the diagonal composition as it moves across the lower half of the painting. The contrast of light also creates space between the man and the woman fainting; symbolizing a disconnect between the two figures. The use of space is also interesting, Ahsauerus is alone and is enclosed in a corner, while Esther is being held by two other woman who are physically very close to her, not allowing any space between their clothes, suggesting a nurturing characteristic that is often stereotyped among

However in her interpretative poem she found a perspective of the painting that connected with her. As she used every stroke of darkness painted into the canvas an opportunity to have it symbolize this darkness and evil that resides in the world. It told her story and her experience of a starry night. Similarly Van Gogh had used every stroke of light painted into the canvas to be a symbol of beauty, and a symbol of his fascination of the night sky and its illuminating lights. He uses swift movements of his brush to depict a sky that seem to be able to sweep the mind away from the frustrations of this world in to the dreamy night light. In an empty room at the Timken Museum of Art hangs one of the most iconic paintings of Johannes Vermeer, the astonishing painting, Woman in Blue Reading a Letter. In the painting a pale woman’s stands patiently while reading a letter. The woman appears to be wearing a blue jacket and a long gray skirt, and only gazing at the letter, ignoring all of her surroundings. The top right of the painting seems to be a map of the Netherlands, which attracts the viewer because it explains the setting of where the painting took place. The blue jacket around the woman’s torso appears to exaggerate the woman’s stomach, giving the impression that she might be pregnant. The blue chairs resemble a sign of absence as if she lives alone. The light on the top left shines on her face which enhances the viewer’s view of the woman’s facial expression. Johannes Vermeer’s interpretation of complex colors, the light, and her body language inflicts a persuasion on the viewer that the women is traumatized by the news in the letter.
In the novella of "Girl in Hyacinth Blue" by Susan Vreeland, it has many short stories that talk about a painting by J. Vermeer of Delft, and in each story, it talks about the painting and the impact that it has on different people's lives for better or for worse.
