The “Mommy” is a. Her boyfriend. They make fun of me. I don't like being made fun of. Mommies aren't supposed to do that. Yours don't.” (Taylor 28) This quote shows the betrayal and emotional abuse Danielle faces, as her own mother and her mother’s boyfriend mocks and ridicules her. Danielle’s comment, “Yours don’t” shows that she is aware other children do not experience the same hurtful behaviour that she does. When Danielle had run away from home for two days, she hid in a fort by the river. Once she was found by Shelley, Ralph, and William, she asked whether her mother had called to look for her. Although everyone tried to hide the truth, Ralph spoke up. She hadn’t called in yet. Danielle had been missing for two whole days and her own mother did not even bother to make a phone call. This proves that she is very neglectful and careless towards her own daughter’s well-being. To put it simply, Danielle’s mother has completely failed her role as a parent, showing a lack of care for her child, causing a lot of hardship.
