Lawrence King Ayiigah Prof. Stephanie Dupal ENG 125 4 October 2017 Plot Response, “Get Out” Jordan Peele is a renowned American comedian, actor, writer, producer, and director. He is well known for the comedy series Key and Peele. He was born to a black father and a white mother. Peele shows his expertise as a director in the movie “Get Out”. This movie, directed by Peele, was released on February 24, 2017. In this movie, a promising black photographer by name Chris goes with his girlfriend (Rose) to visit her parents. This visit turns out to be unpleasant and horrifying. “Get Out” is a movie heavily packed with symbols of slavery and racism which creates awareness. The first time a deer shows up is when Chris and Rose run into it on the road. It appears again when Rose’s father talks about his hatred for deer, and shows up again on the wall in the room where Chris was held captive. The Deer represents the black generation. It shows how blacks are brutalized and little attention is given. Most black brutalities happen on the road. Chris’ empathy for the deer is because of how his mother died and he felt guilty for not doing anything about that. Roses father tries to hide his hate for Blacks but his hate for deer speaks volumes. The deer on the wall depicts the black men Rose dated and how they are killed to be used as rewards for whites in the community. Rose’s mother uses a tea cup and a silver spoon to hypnotize Chris as she gently stirs the tea. The silver spoon represents the privilege of being white and wealthy, blacks are suppressed and made powerless by these attributes. Chris is made to believe the hypnotizing is a treatment for his addiction to smoking, as he is being hypnotized, he floats into the “The Sunken Place” and feels his soul leaving his body.
