Retirement is a willful termination from a career after working maximum amount of years for a company. The average individual retires around the age sixty- five (Martin, 2014). Retirement is supposed to be a happy phase in an individual life however it can take a while for individual to adjust to not working. Retirement is important to the field of human development due to the fact it shows how older adults developed and transition in the later years of life. Gerontology is the exact field that studies the aging of the older population. The field of human development examines individual from birth to death (Broderick & Blewitt,2015). Thus, the reason you see many older adults volunteering or finding a part time job. I strongly believe that counseling should be received before retiring. Volunteering provides a sense of feeling needed, which is one of the most parts of identity. Volunteering also provides self-purpose. Volunteer is the lifeline of any agency and not profit organization.

Transition is important aspect to successful retirement. Planning is also essential task that must be done before retirement. Retirement impacts everyone differently depending on the individual social status. Robert Atchley developed a model to identify the process of retirement in five stages which are the honeymoon phase, disenchantment, reorientation, stability, and termination (Martin, 2014). The honeymoon phase- is the acceptance phase where the individual comes to terms with retire rather the individual like or dislike their new lifestyle (Martin, 2014). Acceptance is key to self-growth it shows signs of maturity. Disenchantment- expectation versus reality phase the individual likely to experience disappointment (Martin,2014).
