Washington and King as Aspiring Leaders: The Power of Transformational Leadership
During the different stages of history, people have had well-defined traits that make them great leaders. As a matter of fact, there are four separate leadership styles used, and they are as follows: great man, situational, transformational and transactional. Overall, transformational leaders have characteristics that stand out and they have positive outcomes. These leaders influence crowds of people who look up to them daily. Identically, transformational leaders care about each individual follower and help them become pro leaders themselves. Their charisma, support and strong speeches assemble encouragement

Washington didn’t use his followers as a mean to an end, but instead, he thought highly of and appreciated them (Stallard). Michael Lee Stallard, the author of “What made George Washington a Great Leader,” writes, “It wasn’t his generalship that made him stand out… It was the way he attended to and stuck by his men. His soldiers knew he respected and cared for them, and that he would share their severe hardships.” Washington listened to and respected other people’s thoughts and he helped them gain a voice. He was a role model to many by the way he persevered through the obstacles in his path. An important quote by Stallard says, “Under his leadership the colonists pulled off one of history’s greatest upsets by defeating the preeminent power of their age with an under-trained, under-resourced militia.” As shown above, Washington achieved a lot by his confidence and humility. While doing this, he set an example that still has us sacrificing and representing transformational …show more content…
These leaders influence and show praise, as well as being selfless in everyday actions. The leaders have integrity and get to know their followers. As has been noted, George Washington was a transformational leader who stood by his men and didn’t see them as a means to an end. In the same fashion, Martin Luther King Jr. bears these traits and keeps inspiring people to this day. He had determination and risked his life to have equality for African Americans. In brief, the immense amount of qualities that have been brought up show transformational leadership as the most
What leadership traits did you observe that portrayed transformational leadership? How did this affect relationships and the outcomes?
...selbein and Cohen, “organizations that take the time to teach leadership are far ahead of the competition. By becoming familiar with the transformational leadership approach and combining the four I's, managers can become effective leaders in the business world.” (1999, p. 263). Transformational leadership can be applied in one-on-one or group situations. Using this approach, the manager (leader) and the associates (followers) are “transformed” to enhance job performance and help the organization be more productive and successful. All of these leaders have the attributes mentioned here. History will decide the greater impact they had on society as it is being written every day. Therefore, the qualities of transformational leadership make the essence of transformational management and the key to successful management of transformational organizational changes.
He was an excellent general and an influential role model to many people. He led the Patriots in the Revolutionary War and became the 1st President. He was the courageous, brave, and trustworthy George Washington. Throughout our lives, many people have showed that when power is acquired or given, it is often abused and taken advantage up.However, George Washington was the streak of hope scattered throughout a world of despair. Before George Washington came into power, King George, The King of Britain, had been unfair and cruel to the many citizens of America, which was a colony of England in the 1700’s.
It was under his command that the colonial militia emerged victorious against the British. However, in defeating the British another threat to American democracy had been released. This threat was Washington himself. Washington had the colonial militia under his control. He could have easily performed a "coup d'état" and seized control of the newly freed nation. However, Washington's ambitions were not to become a dictator, or king. He believed that power did not come from controlling others, but from the honor and respect that was given to him. Washington knew that this power would only come from subordination to civilian authority. He would be a precedent by being the first general to turn down his immense powers. With these actions, Washington assured the success of a new democratic nation.
Transformational leaders exhibit personal and professional qualities that other want to emulate and follow. These leaders advance the mission in combative environments. Transformational leaders propel the growth of the team through communication. Finally, transformational leaders leave a legacy that instills pride, moral, and determination for future success.
George Washington paved the way for future presidents. He passed down a legacy of strength, integrity and national purpose. He was placed as commander of the Virginia militia which was his very first military experience. The American Revolution was beginning to start by the time of the Second Conti...
George Washington: You probably know him as the first president of the United States. I know him as a very effective leader of the country’s military, and a hard worker as well. Not only was he a great president, but he was also a successful leader in the military on many occasions as well. Therefore, the three qualities that made George Washington an effective leader were how much he was willing to sacrifice for the country, being so confident, & respectableness.
George Washington showed amazing leadership skills while remaining aware that he is not greater then everyone else. When Washington was first brought the idea of presidency he declined not wanting to be viewed as a king or anything greater then the people around him. He didn't want to and didn't become president for power or anything other then to be a leader and guide the country through the good and bad. Washington was the respectable general of an army and was a strong leader through many important historical battles that changed the course of history.
George Washington had many roles throughout his life in which he expressed his character and leadership. He was able to provide for his family at a young age. He also served in the military during the French and Indian War, and believed himself to be an innovative farmer. After, he was the Commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. During his Presidency, Washington was able to bring the new country together and gain foreign exchanges. When he returned home, he died with his family and friends by his side. George Washington was a great founder of this country.
George Washington has influenced the United States in many positive ways as the first president of the United States. Washington was molded into a great leader at a young age through his life experiences. He helped unite the people and helped organize the country through his great leadership skills. Washington served in the American Revolution as a leader for the continental army before he became president. George was a war hero and a role model for the United States.
...war, he influenced the nation to have a strong central government. After his death and the rejection of a third term, the two-term limit was made. The first president of the United States, George Washington held many reliable traits as a young man, as he grew to a war hero, and an influential leader for generations to come.
Vince Lombardi, a football coach who led the Green Bay Packers to win two Super Bowl championships, once said, “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile” (Bio.com). The influence of individuals who have developed strong leadership can be seen in all levels of society, from families to governments. In particular, one individual that stands out throughout history for his lasting leadership is George Washington. Washington was an effective leader who left a lasting legacy and did not let the power he held affect his personal character.
With George Washington being pronounced as a war hero he became the President by the only unanimous draft by the Electoral College. At 6 feet 2 inches and strong features Washington was an imposing person though he favored the quiet over politics. This might have been his greatest attribute. Washington did not run his everyday life to become president so when he was elected he was able to lead through his character. He did not try to use the typical “politician” agenda or talk to convince people he was in charge. He was so well liked that when he arrived in New York, the temporary capital, he was greeted by not only pomp and circumstance, cannons, flowered covered road, by more importantly a crowd that was singing and shouting. He then
As a visionary leader, President Washington continued to be a charismatic leader who held the loyalty and affection of the people. He stayed close to the public; however, he never gave into public opinion if it contradicted his morals and visions. Washington also was persistent in keeping the details of his administration, the big and little necessary current decisions, following his long term goals. He knew that for the nation to strengthen, it must be given time to grow, and should, therefore, not get involved in any unnecessary actions that would prevent this
Transformational leadership is one of the most popular leadership styles. According to Kendrick (2011), “Transformational leadership involves four factors: 1. idealized influence, 2. inspirational motivation, 3. intellectual stimulation, and 4. individual consideration.” These four factors make transformational leadership have an impact on followers. The goal of transformational leadership is to cause a positive change in individuals, help motivate them, and develop a leader within each individual.
