Elvis Presley was a well-known man and loved by many people. Based on http://www.brainpickings.org/2013/04/11/elvis-presley-teens-consumer-culture/Elvis Just like Muddy Waters, Presley timing was perfect as well. He came into and era (1950s) where the devastations of the great depression and world wars were over. People were now starting to have some freedom and enjoy the thing they loved which was listening to music and living life to the fullest. The social change that the 50s brought reflected music significantly, and Elvis Presley arose.. Kids were now starting to rebel against their parents and they had a lot of extra money to spend on records because of prosperity. During the Wars, money was limited and kids and adults had to work extra hard and save for survival purposes, but once the war-ended money could be used for pleasure reasons rather than just for survival. In addition, in the 50s our country had it’s own war, and I’m not talking about the World Wars, but yet human inequality. The civil rights movement was one of the biggest social changes in history and was a time where a lot of great artist prevailed and made songs on the issue. Based on Larson fourth edition pg 38, it says that his record sales boomed, and then rock “n”
Peter Singer practices utilitarianism, he believes the consequence of an action matters more than the reason behind the action. Singer is trying to convince his audience to donate their money to end world poverty. He believes it is moral to give as much money as the person can give, allowing them to purchase just enough for them to live on, and this will be the right action to take. Singer is aiming toward the United States to contribute more to charity. Singer does not consider specific aspects that do not support his argument and causes his argument to not list specific aspects of his belief. Singer’s argument is not a good argument because he does not consider the ramifications of people donating their surplus of money would do to the economy; is it our duty to feed the poor; and that our moral intuitions are not consequentialist at all when it concerns what our rescue duties entail.
Singer discussed that “whatever money you're spending on luxurious not necessities, should be given away”, and to this I say a firm no. There is a limit to kindness I believe. Yes, what goes around comes around. If you're a good person, good things will occur to you, but there's a limit to how much a person can actually give. The limit of aid an individual can extend to, is till their happiness is compromised. So, an individual can donate half of their saving if they would like, but once giving extends to diminishing one’s happiness it is time to pull the plug. There is no benefit in giving to the less fortunate, if you are miserable. Yes, at the end of the day you are aiding x amount of children not to go hungry; but the extent of one’s happiness
