Recommended: Effects of corruption on a society

Bernard Malamud once said, “The purpose of the writer is to keep civilization from destroying itself.” This quote means that the purpose of the author is to bring awareness to the issues in society. This quote is shown to be true in Animal Farm by George Orwell and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In these two pieces of literature, the authors expose the issues in society that can lead to destruction and the character’s demise.

Napoleon from George Orwell’s Animal Farm demonstrates how a character can corrupt a society. Napoleon started off as a fairly strong leader, and followed all of the teaching’s of Old Major and the commandments that were agreed upon by all animals. As time went on Napoleon began to alter the commandments to make them more suitable for himself and the other pigs. Some of the commandments that Napoleon broke were “no animal shall sleep in a bed” and “no animal shall drink alcohol” The commandment of “no animal shall sleep in a bed” was altered to “no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets,” so that the pigs could sleep on the beds in the farmh...

    Orwell uses words to demonstrate that language can be deceptive, powerful, and manipulative. A farm is brought up, where the social order has been corrupt by the superior class of the pigs. The major difference between the pigs and other animals is that pigs can fluently use language and other animals cannot. Orwell introduces the plot of the pigs’ politics being corrupt due to greed and intense pride of their species. The pigs seek to make use of other animals’ underdeveloped linguistic skills and ignorance. Horses, goats, sheep and other animals have been assigned enormous amount of work by the pigs to cultivate the farm and build a windmill. The pigs call themselves brain workers and do not take part in work that involves physical movement. They easily convince other animals into thinking that this is the reason why Jones is not coming back. In this deceiving manner of using words, the pigs have ascended to the leading class of this “society” while the other animals resulted in belonging to the “working class”. Also, the book constantly mentions how powerful language can be. Napoleon’s unique diction that carries an intimidating and admonishing effect causes the animals to have an unconditional belief in him. Orwell purposely exemplifies a society within a fable to effectively note these three aspects of deception, power, and manipulation and to emphasize that one’s mastery of language is crucial in order not to be tricked and manipulated by the words of the elite class who were given proper education.

    Animal Farm portrays many facets of the Communist revolution in Russia; however the book and the movie are both set on a farm in England in the 1950‘s. The book starts with Old Major, the founder of animalism, explaining how the animal rebellion would be coming soon and everyone should be preparing for the revolution. According to the book he died of old age but in the movie he was hit by a bullet from Mr. Jones’s shotgun causing Old Major to fall out of the hay loft and break his neck. Later Napoleon and Snowball come to prepare the animals for the coming revolution. Jones was a drunk and his workers did not always feed the animals regularly so one night Jones to the men out for drinks and they did not return for three days, and when he did return he still did not feed the animals. The animals took it upon themselves to break into the food storage and feed themselves and they were happy until Jones heard the noise they were making and went in there to see what was going on and when he tried to stop them they all attack him at once and chased him and his men of the property and then it was all theirs. Snowball started right away showing them the ways of animalism and stating that they were rules to live by. The men fled in panic, and before anyone realized it, the rebellion had begun.
