James Jia Mrs. Broderick American Literature 7 April 2016 Explore Relations between George and Lennie Of Mice and Men is a novel by John Steinbeck published in 1937. The book is telling a story of two migrant farm workers trying to survive the Great Depression in 1930s’ in Northern California. George Milton and Lennie Small are the main character in the book, they worked together at the ranch until Lennie got into trouble: he likes to touch soft things, when he tried to touch a girl hair, she misunderstood him, thought he is going to insult her. Therefore they have to run away and find new jobs. George is short-tempered but loving and caring, and Lennie is strong but lack of intelligence. Despite their ages and characters, their relationship is more like "father and son" than just friends. The relationship between intelligent George and slow Lennie is the focal point in the novel, they knew each other since grammar school while they were kids. George thinks for Lennie and takes care of him, Lennie is a good worker and considered a potential protection and companion of George. “They had walked in single file down the path, and even in the open one stayed behind the other. Both were dressed in denim trousers and in denim coats with brass buttons. Both wore black, shapeless hats and both carried tight blanket rolls slung over their shoulders.” (Steinbeck p.4) These appearances were introduced at the beginning of the novel, they dress alike and walk beside each other. George continuously says his life would be eaiser without him. "God a'mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an' work, an no trouble. No mess at all, and when the end of the month come I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get whatever I want."(p.89) George is not expecting Lennie could understand, it is like the kind of moment when kids make trouble and parents think they would be much better without them and George feel the same way when Lennie acting
