I have chosen George Milton from the book of mice and men to do this essay on. George' archetype is "the hero" in this book. This means that this character has overcome obstacles, is morally good and face challenges throughout the book. George is able to stay true to himself throughout every hardship that he has to overcome. He is a devoted character who is always sticking up for himself and his close friend Lennie. Dealing with finding work and handling money during the Great Depression is hard enough but having a person by your side all the time that depends on you makes it even harder but George finds a way to deal and cooperate with it all. This shows how caring George is and how his character is truly "the hero" archetype. In this book George is constantly taking care of Lennie and is always reassuring him that they will have their own land and be able to tend the rabbits. George doesn’t actually believe in this dream which shows how he is willing to say anything to make Lennie happy. Also, George is constantly bringing up how easy his life would be without Lennie, he said "God almighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could get a job a work, an no trouble (12). This quote shows how George is aware that Lennie is holding him back from making more money but how he choices to stay with him because they have a genuine friendship. Examples include how George and Lennie are always talking about the dream which is owning their own farm. This dream symbolizes independence and freedom. It also symbolizes George and Lennie's relationship and the retelling of the dream becomes a ritual. Also in the book metaphors take place. George playing solitaire shows that it represnts the loneliness that is felt by living on the ranch. This shows George is always trying to be alone and
