Francine Prose says “Education, after all, is a process intended to produce a product.” The product Gentry High is striving to produce are college-bond and career ready students. But how does Gentry strive to produce these products ?, “Gentry’s educational process includes standardize test, accelerated classes, and dual enrollment classes .”
Standardized test are test that decide if you graduates or not. Many people feel that this is a very effective way to produce product. As a student I feel this is a very ineffective. There is a big weight on the student's shoulder. There are a lot of “what ifs” with the test. “What if I don’t pass the test?” or “What if I won’t be able to graduate because of that one test?”. The products come as a “some win, some lose” basis. This process is very ineffective when it comes to producing Gentry’s product.

Accelerated classes or AP classes are administered by The College Board and are the roughly equal to undergraduate college classes.( "AP Classes: To Take or Not to Take?" StudyPoints RSS.
Web. 18 Sept. 2015.) Many students who are enrolled in AP classes are students who excel and want a challenge. This way is very effective because it ensures that the student will be college ready. But his method is also ineffective because there are some students who won't be able to get into AP classes . Does this mean that students who aren’t enrolled in AP classes are challenge like does in regular class and are they receiving just as valuable education as the AP students ? This method is both ineffective and
effective. Dual enrollment are like AP classes but different. Dual enrollment classes are classes that allow students to enroll in college courses for credit way before high school graduation and their first year of college . ("ECampusTours.com." High School Dual Enrollment. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 Sept. 2015.). Dual enrollment classes focus mainly on the college bound part of the school’s motto. With these classes the student will be able to earn their college credits before even leaving college. It puts the student ahead in college. This method is very effective because it prepares students for college. It also gives them a head start to what they are expected to learn in college. At Gentry High School the motto states that all students will be college-bond and career ready. There are ways that are ineffective and effective to produce this product. Standardized test are ineffective because they can hold a student back from graduating. AP classes are effective and ineffective because many students don’t get to experience AP. Dual enrollment classes are effective because students get a college class experience in high school.
...ild, when he would hide and daydream, up until his first years of college, when he would avoid areas that were difficult, the author recognized that there was important link between challenging the student on a meaningful level and the degree to which the student eventually produced. “I felt stupid telling them I was… well – stupid.” (Rose 43) Here, Rose shows an example of how poor preparation and low standards in the classroom can make a student feel inadequate. Indeed, one can see how many things seemingly unrelated do affect a student’s ability to learn.
It is a prevailing assumption among both philosophers that having an accurate belief of our self and the world is important. On the topic of free will and moral responsibility, Strawson argues for the pessimist viewpoint while Susan argues for the compatibilist viewpoint.
De Beauvoir explains, that individuals are able to obtain their own personal freedom using two separate factors. In regards to the first factor, De Beauvoir explains, “The individual must at last assume his subjectivity.” (De Beauvoir 16) What I believe De Beauvoir to be saying here is that individuals must be able to see themselves as an independent aspect of their world, something distinct from the other people as well as other things. This explains, in other words, that an individual must see himself or herself as a being, which holds their own personal agency. This individual must also recognize this idea, that they are their own individuals being in themselves.
In the essay AP courses-Mounting Burden, Declining Benefit, the author Nathan Yan expresses his concern about the impact of AP classes have on students. He states that most of students who takes AP courses have an infatuation of passing the AP tests. Yan explains that with this kind of obsession, students are giving up their education, desire to learn and their understanding of the subject for a 3, 4, or 5 test score on the AP test. The writer was wondering that by giving up all these important characteristics of taking a class, a passing score on the AP test really mean anything much, let alone exemplify the readiness for college by AP students. Furthermore, he argues that by creating and teaching AP courses, teachers and administrators are
“Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe”( Douglass). This famous quote epitomizes the philosophies of Frederick Douglass, in which he wanted everyone to be treated with dignity; if everyone was not treated with equality, no one person or property would be safe harm. His experience as a house slave, field slave and ship builder gave him the knowledge to develop into a persuasive speaker and abolitionist. In his narrative, he makes key arguments to white abolitionist and Christians on why slavery should be abolished. The key arguments that Frederick Douglass tries to vindicate are that slavery denies slaves of their identity, slavery is also detrimental for the slave owner, and slavery is ungodly.
Standardized testing is a down fall to many students but also an opportunity for many others. Standardized testing has its pros and its cons. It can be the make it or break it factor into getting into colleges you are hoping to attend or the scholarships you want to earn. Some people may have their opinions about the test, whether they hate it or not but the fact is that it’s here to stay.
Although there have been legitimate arguments supporting the benefits of standardized testing, such as their ability to successfully measure students’ proficiency, in recent years there have been concerns and disadvantages regarding how their misuse poses a serious threat to the American education system. Despite the belief that standardized tests should be used to measure students’ proficiency, there are more reasons outweighing this statement regarding why they shouldn’t be used for this purpose. Not only is this a particular issue with standardized testing, but the tests are becoming more high stakes and are being used unfairly to determine things such as graduation, or placement in a school, resulting in a significant amount of stress and anxiety in students. Testing corporations are also profiting from the design of these standardized tests, while standardized testing is also forcing teachers to all teach the same thing, leading to a lack of creativity in the students. Aside from these arguments, standardized tests have been found to be becoming flawed and have poor design.
Students dread the time of the year when they stop with their course material and begin to prepare for test. Everyone is in agreement that some type of revolution is needed when it comes to education; eliminating standardized test will aid the reform. The need for standardized testing has proven to be ineffective and outdated; some leading educationalist also believe this because the tests do not measure a student’s true potential. This will save money, stop labeling, and alleviate stress in students and teachers.
The first point that Etelson makes in her article is about the pressure that students are under today, she often refers to it as “educational pressure cooker” (Etelson, 2015). Today, every student is overwhelmed with pressure. Middle class students have pressure to get into a top college. Poor students feel
Throughout the novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huckleberry Finn challenges the meaning of being civilized by being morally good with only self-guidance and nature to rely on. Mark Twain was born in Florida, Missouri in 1835, and spent most of his young life near the Mississippi River just as Huck did. Twain’s father died when he was 12 and Huck’s father also died when he was young. Twain expressed Huck’s sense of adventure and fortune through his travels to the holy land and his interests in South American treasure. Twain served for the Confederacy during The Civil War, but was persuaded to leave by his brother, putting him on the path of becoming an author. In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, Twain emphasizes that the traditional definition of being civilized does not apply to Huck by shaping Huck’s morals through survival and nature.
Standardized testing caters to one population of people and one style of learning. These tests are supposed to measure if you are on your grade level but can be extremely ineffective. I remember taking the SAT and them asking questions that I did not know how to solve and it was so long that it made me not want to take it. This creates a problem for students because they figure why take a test I know I am going to fail and that take hours to take. The success rate for that is very low. These tests cater to people that a tolerant enough to sit down for hour and comprehend the work in one particular way but everyone is not tolerant enough for it. Just like one of my old professor said everyone learns and comprehends and has tolerance for a lot of things but taking a test that is four hours long with work that you can’t comprehend because you don’t have enough time to think in that particular section is not fair to every stud...
During the earlier times of America, many people had different opinions on the forming country, debating if it was free or not. It was called “the land of the free” and many other important documents backed up the argument. Yet, there are many concepts that go against that and really show what America was. A particular slave named Dred Scott, African-Americans, and new immigrants can all testify that America was not independent, but was in fact very restricting. Juries would go against previously made laws to make sure that what they wanted would always be insured. Multiple regulations would be formulated to be beneficial to the Americans. People that were not truly American were seen as property not people. Many were pushed around and harrased and it
Standardized testing is not an effective way to test the skills and abilities of today’s students. Standardized tests do not reveal what a student actually understands and learns, but instead only prove how well a student can do on a generic test. Schools have an obligation to prepare students for life, and with the power standardized tests have today, students are being cheated out of a proper, valuable education and forced to prepare and improve their test skills. Too much time, energy, and pressure to succeed are being devoted to standardized tests. Standardized testing, as it is being used presently, is a flawed way of testing the skills of today’s students.
We have always heard “In with the new and out with the old”, yet one man has flipped this view; Bernie Sanders is a senior citizen who is wanted in the white instead of a younger Democrat or Republican. Bernie Sander at the age of 74 , has Hillary Clinton, age 68 in the run for her money. Bernard Sanders is running for President as a Democrat now but he was an Independent. Bernard has been in the mouths of millions of people, most importantly, those of the younger generation. Bernie has left the general population “Feeling the Bern”. Sanders form of speaking makes it comprehensible for the youngest teen to the oldest of citizens. Bernie Sanders is the man for the White House. Throughout his voyage people have heard, “ He is a Commie he will destroy America” yet, he has been the leader in the teen vote. In addition, he was the first independent socialist in the house and remained a socialist until his run for the Presidency. The appointment of Sanders to the
One of the foremost developers of modern curriculum was Ralph W. Tyler. Tyler had a passion to teach, and to do it well. In his early years in education, both as a student and as an educator, Tyler witnessed many deficiencies in the American Education system. This paper will discuss Tyler's understanding of the nature and structure of knowledge and the needs of the learner. It will also compare two approaches to curriculum development, product and process models. It will discuss their impact on curriculum development in relation to Tyler's interlocking system.
