During the Upper East Side: A Clash of Titans tour I has the opportunity to learn about civilization and people in the 19th century. On this tour I learned many things such as The Unions club which is the name of a gentlemen’s club. A gentlemen’s club during the 1900s was where wealthy men went to hang out with other wealthy men. William Dams Delano and Chester Homes Aldrich formed The Knickerbocker Club in 1871. They formed this club because they felt the Unions Club let in anyone. In 1891, the Metropolitan club was formed by J.P. Morgan because the Unions club was to elite for himself and other men to get into. The Seventh Regiment Armory was designed by an architect by the name of Charles Clinton. The building was headquarters for the Silk Stocking regiment or as they were also known as the 7th New York Militia. …show more content…

Today, The Armory is used to hold Art fairs. Jay Gould during his timer was the most hated man in America. He was a very wealthy businessman and at one point in time tried to corner the gold market. When the Gould family was cut out of the first four hundred Jay’s oldest son, George ran off and got married to an actress by the name of Edith Kingdon. During the 19th century being an actress was not a respectable reputation. Although Helen, Georges mother disliked Edith and wasn’t happy that her son married an actress Edith actually ends up helping the Gould family back into the first four hundred. Before going on the tour I knew that the Upper East Side was a location of wealth and power. My opinion was reinforced when I learned about that many privileged people would leave New York and travel somewhere during the summer because it was too hot and the garbage would
