What is periodicity?
Periodicity is the study of the trends in chemical and physical
properties of the elements and their compounds relative to their
positions in the periodic table.
The periodic table has been developed over the last 150 years. The
basic structure of the table is very closely related to our current
understanding of the electronic structure of the elements. However,
when the periodic table was first constructed (by Mendeleev, in the
1800's ), the electronic structure of the elements had not been
devised.
Instead, early forms of the periodic table relied on using the
physical properties of the elements known at that time. It must have
been a great revelation to the chemists from the early part of this
century to realise that there really was such a strong correlation
between chemical properties of the elements and their physical
structure.

The elements in the columns down the periodic table form groups. The
major groups are numbered but often the numbers are given as Roman
numerals (the first group, the blue column in the above diagram, is
referred to as group I etc).
Elements within the same group similar chemical properties but often
show a systematic variation in extent or speed of reaction as the
group is descended.
For example all of the group one elements (the alkali metals) react
vigorously with water to form water soluble alkalis with the
subsequent production of hydrogen gas.
However, the speed of reaction increases down the group (lithium only
reacts relatively slowly with water but francium and rubidium are
explosive in the presence of water)
The rows across the periodic table are known as periods. The chemistry
of the elements within each period will tend to change quite
dramatically but we can still determine trends in some physical
properties and the nature of some common reactions.
An elements¡¦ reaction to certain substances may be predicted by its placement on the Periodic Table of Elements. Across a period, an element on the left will react with more vigor than one on the right, of the same period. Vertically, as elements are sectioned into groups, the reaction of each element increases as you move down in the same group. With this in mind, the reactions of the substances involved in this experiment may be hypothesized, observed, and validated.
For one, the atomic masses increase as you go down a column or across a row. But mine don’t “snake” like the real one. The last one on one row isn’t always (ever) smaller than the first one of the next row. The real periodic table does that. Both my periodic table and the official periodic table have our atomic numbers “snake” around. But my periodic table is skinny and tall, but the real periodic table is short and long. It also isn’t a rectangle, and has an additional piece under the main part. Mine is just a simple, tall rectangle with nothing below. Between my horse periodic table and the real periodic table, there are plenty of differences, but there are also plenty of similarities.
This showed that dissolved gases were mechanically mixed with the water and weren?t mixed naturally. But in 1803 it was found that this depended on the weight of the individual particles of the gas or atoms. By assuming the particles were the same size, Dalton was able to develop the idea of atomic weights. In 1803 this theory was finalised and stated that (1) all matter is made up of the smallest possible particles termed atoms, (2) atoms of a given element have unique characteristics and weight, and (3) three types of atoms exist: simple (elements), compound (simple molecules), and complex (complex molecules).
The best-selling novel, The Disappearing Spoon, is written by Sam Kean. The book revolves around the periodic table. It goes into such depth of the table, it is literally an adventure historically, politically, and scientifically. Not to mention, it is relevant to what has been learned this school year, which is what I’ll be talking about in this paper. The book is extremely helpful in learning the periodic table of elements, which is an imperative tool to have when studying physical science or chemistry, for example. It fills an unknown void of what the table is, solving mysteries as the chapter progresses.

A significant reason we so easily believe in myths is because of our brain’s predisposition to make things simpler. Our hectic lives distract us from distinguishing what is meaningful and what is not. This allows our minds to “trick” us into thinking something with absolutely no meaning at all has all of the meaning in the world. This is called patternicity and most likely comes from an evolutionarily, adaptive tendency. An example would be if someone was to eat a specific food and then get sick soon after. They would relate the sickness to that food and avoid it for some time. It doesn’t matter if the food was the actual cause of sickness or if it was just a coincidence. The battery is the main power source of the phone and without it then the phone would not work.
Dalton’s atomic theory says that each element contained its own number of atoms. Each element had its own size and weight. Dalton’s idea said that all things are made of small bits of matter this bits of matter where too small to be seen even with a microscope. Scientist began to think these small bits of matter where responsible for chemical changes. They thought that when these bits of matter combined a chemical change took place. Dalton assumed that there was a special pattern in the elements and was partly responsible for the periodic table.
