Kindred CRR: Question Four Dana, the main character in Octavia Spencer’s graphic novel, Kindred, is not complicit in the sexual exploitation of black women. Rather, she was burdened with a precarious dilemma in which she was forced to choose between risking her own life by asserting what little influence she had over Rufus to protect Alice, or risking the disruption of her family lineage which would ultimately dissolving her existence. Forced to choose between two unfavorable options, Dana selects the lesser of the two evils. Her decision appeared to be deceitful because of the circumstances, however, to preserve her family genealogy, both Rufus and Alice needed to remain alive. Throughout the novel, it is quickly concluded that Dana and Rufus
are bound to one another for some higher purpose. Dana is continuously dragged back into the antebellum south to protect Rufus from harm. However, it’s not until The Fight that readers discover that Dana must also protect Alice because without them both Joe and Hagar, Dana’s direct ancestors, would not have been born. Furthermore, it was highly unlikely that Alice would have survived another beating if she refused to sleep with Rufus, especially since she barely survived an almost fatal beating a few days prior after attempting to run away. Moreover, if Alice refused, Rufus would have simply raped her causing her more physical pain. Therefore, although it pained Dana to do so, the safest option was to encouraged Alice to do as Rufus wished. It could be plausible that Dana selfishly exploited Alice for her own survival. However, she’s be risking possible adverse social, political, and economic effects in present day 1976 if her ascendants were never born. Although Alice made the ultimate physical sacrifice, Dana also painfully sacrificed her morals and dignity as a woman to allow history to take its course.
Being a black woman in 1979, Dana has developed a strong sense of identity; therefore, when people challenge this identity she uses her inner strength to find a calm way to combat the controversy. In the present, her relationship with a white man is mocked by a fellow coworker who mutters, “‘Chocolate and vanilla porn!” [She] close[s] her eyes in exasperation. He always did that. Started a “joke” that wasn’t funny to begin with, then beat it to death. “God, I wish he’d get drunk and shut up!” (56) Dana
Even though racial discrimination may not be as prevalent in the present day society, many African American men and women believe that they do not experience the same opportunities as the white race. Media in general plays such an active role in bringing more information about racial discrimination and how it is still occurring today. But media can also bring negative effects to the struggle in living up to social standards to today’s society “norms”. Anna Mae was very brave in lying about her identity to become someone she really wanted to be. But, I feel she should have never had to have done that. He story just goes to show how the power of society can change you as a human being. It can make you believe that you must change your identity in order to “fit in” which I find to be very sad. I think that more people in this world need to stand up to theses stereotypes of being the “perfect American” and say that no one is perfect in this world and everyone is created by the most perfect human God. Overall, racial discrimination is a part of our everyday lives and "By the Way, Meet Vera Stark" can still speak to us today, even with the play set in a time 80 years
Alice and Kevin have an interesting start to their relationship. Initially, it appears that Dana is not interested in Kevin, as she tries to reject communication and his advances through buying her lunch. This distance on Dana’s part allows readers to contemplate whether Dana is put off by Kevin’s obtrusive attitude because he is a man, because he is white, or a combination of the two. As the novel advances, Butler continues to focus Kevin’s faults in his marriage because of his identity as a white man.

When she first is confronted by the problem or race it hits her with a thump. Bob takes Alice to dinner where she states, “I don’t want feel like being refused” (55). Alice does what she can to avoid the face of racism. She lacks the integration within the different community, which gives her a one-path perspective. While going to the restaurant with Bob, he asks, “Scared because you haven’t got the white folks to cover you” (55)? She doesn’t have the protection of her friends or her parents to shy away from the truth of her being African American. She is hiding behind a mask because she’s passing as white. She’s accepting the assumption that she belongs to their culture. When she goes out, “with white folks the people think you’re white” (60). But, when she goes out with Bob there is nothing to hide behind. She’s confronted with the truth. Already feeling low about the restaurant, and getting pulled over by the cops, she uses her wealth to get out of the situation. She says, “I am a supervisor in the Los Angeles Welfare” (63). Baldwin’s writing technique is simultaneously created by the thought of his two different worlds – reality and fiction. By converting his reality of life and present issues in America and translating it into a story, he introduces abroad point of view to the audience. In both of these short stories, he introduces two different stories with several different characters who both inhabit a common realistic theme, oppression, which serves as a major important role in all of their lives. Jesse was oppressed by his sexual identity, while Sonny’s brother was oppressed by the responsibility of taking care of his younger brother. It is even possible to claim that the antagonists’ of the story are oppressed as well. It could be claimed that Jesse’s wife was also an oppressed character. Though the story doesn’t reveal much about Jesse’s wife, it could be assumed that she suffered from oppression because Jesse could not please her sexually. She could be suffering from mental pressure or distress, a solid form of oppression, because she may feel she is the reason as to why Jesse cannot sexually perform correctly. The many thoughts that could run through a woman’s mind when her partner can no longer make love to her is free to roam throughout the story since Baldwin left her character unrevealed. In the article, Rape, Racism, and the Myth of the Black Rapist, the author, Angela Davis, discusses on the creation of the myth of the black rapist. This article brings two main ideas together to in order to make a valid argument to why both claims are false and hold no legitimacy. Davis argues that one was created in order to cover up for the other I order to veil the true offenders of sexual abuse. Davis also elaborates on the issue by adding to the argument and stating that white women are also being affected by these myths in a negative way because of the women’s bodies are being perceived as a right.

Millie is an example of the everyday white woman whose class and social standing prompt her unawareness about social problems and her own racist misgivings. Alice Walker’s novel explores this deep-rooted racism intertwined with social class and sexism. Two prominent artists that engage in issues of gender and race are Faith Ringgold and Murray DePillars. When looking at Faith Ringgold’s work, specifically her Slave Rape Series one can see that she does not shy away from the painful history of black womanhood. When looking specifically at Slave Rape Series: Fight: To Save Your Life, 1972 we see Ringgold’s use of the female nude to confront stereotypes of black women. She paints a pregnant black woman with a surprised look on her face holding her pregnant stomach with one hand and a hatchet in the other. She also paints her surrounded by plants, thus further suggesting that she is a slave running away to save her own life and the life of her unborn child. This painting (done on a quilt) acknowledges the vulnerability of this woman but it also acknowledges her struggle and her resistance to her oppressor (an assumed slave owner). Because such a horrific subject like slave rape is painted on an object usually associated with comfort and safety, Ringgold forces her audience to consider the
Ann Perkins, Jones’ character, is supposed to be an ethnically ambiguous person and in reality, Rashida is biracial (Glamour). Leslie Knope, the white protagonist of the series, frequently uses words like ‘exotic’, ‘tropical’, and ‘ethnically ambiguous’ when complimenting Ann. The ‘compliments’ also act as the only instances where race is spoken about in reference to Ann’s character. One would believe that Leslie’s constant complimenting of Ann is beneficial to viewers with a biracial identity, but there are some serious problems with Leslie’s behavior. There has been an historical and recent fascination with ‘mixed’ children. This fascination has crossed over into fetishizatoin of biracial or mixed children and people. Biracial people are seen less as people and more as a kind of spice that bell hooks mentions in her work “Eating the Other: Desire and Resistance” (21). They are something that helps liven up the blandness of the pervasive white culture. Another harmful aspect of Ann’s depiction relates to her class. In Edison’s work, she notes that “biracial individuals living in a middle- and upper-class environments are more likely to be perceived as biracial (rather than black) than those living in working- and lower-class environments” and that “‘color blind’ portrayals of middle- and upper-class Black and biracial characters support the notion that race no longer matters (at least for middle- and upper-class people)” (Edison, 302; 304). Ann’s character is a successful college-educated nurse which is not problematic until one realizes that her race is never truly discussed. This feeds into the stereotype that race does not matter and that all people in the U.S. have the same opportunities. Family history is very important to an individual. By knowing where you come from, you can have a better perspective of your life. Having a clear understanding of your family background allows you to better appreciate the things that you would normally take for granted. The house, the car, and the average clothing may look better when one sees the sacrifices their family has made. They will see that their family has worked very hard just so their family can experience the better things in life. A persons roots and origin is one of the most important things to explore. It alone can bring you closer to self-discovery.
