Gender disparity impacts numerous aspects of everyday life. It influences our work or interactions with others and our home life. It impacts our work by the jobs and positions that certain genders obtain and their salaries. Likewise, it controls how we react to others based on expectations made for our gender. For instance, those who work in customer service tend to be female and are expected to be kind to put customers at ease. It impacts families through the division of work given to spouses based on their gender or perhaps their income. Although it is not as prevalent today as it was throughout history, it still exists. Until about the twentieth century, women were not allowed to join the work force. Society believed that women should stay at home and tend to household duties while men must go out and work. In the book Difference Matters, Brenda J Allen, begins writing about how gender matters in society. One of the main topics that she talks about is how in today’s society the male gender is the more predominate gender. As the reader, she has brought to mind many new ways to view how males earn more money then females, how we classify jobs as masculine or feminine, and also how society excepts males’ vs females to act and preform in the work force.

The social injustice I chose was the Gender Wage Gap. That means that there is a huge difference of one gender getting paid less than the other. A women makes 78 cents an hour while men make a dollar. In my piece, I chose to make both gender symbols doctors who perform the same job, the same amount of work hours,and that they both save lives. This shows that they equally do the same thing but why do the women get paid less than men? Another reason why I chose this is because I am a female and I want to be a doctor who is very successful. Gender Pay Gap also referred to as Gender wage gap, gender income difference or male-female income difference refers to the difference between the earning of men and women (Victoria, 2006). The European Union defines the Gender Pay gap as the difference between men and women’s hourly earnings (OECD, 2012). The difference may be measured on hourly, weekly, monthly, or yearly earning. The difference is expressed as a percentage of the men’s earning. However, the difference varies from one industry to another, from one country to another and from one age group to another. Gender roles, it seems, have always been binary. Men and women across the world have internalized masculine and feminine roles that have been attached to their assigned sex from birth. Men have always been expected to be the head of the household and breadwinner while women are subservient to the men in their lives. The new 20th century brought about political systems such as capitalism and communism that were beginning manifest in Asian countries as well as the beginning of women’s suffrage that began to spread throughout the world. These events set off a chain reaction of change in the roles of men and women.
Men have dominated the workforce for most of civilization up until their patriotic duties called away to war. All of a sudden, the women were responsible for providing for their family while the men were away. Women went to work all over America to earn an income to insure their family’s survival. Women took all sorts of jobs including assembly line positions, office jobs, and even playing professional baseball. When the men returned home from war, the women were expected to resume their place as housewives. The women who had gotten a taste of the professional life decided that they wanted to continue working. Thus, the introduction to women in a man’s working environment began. Women were not taken seriously at first, because they were stepping into a “man’s world”.
Still females are being treated different from their opposite sex. By men taking over the economic responsibilities they degrade the importance of women's roles in the society, “If men are obsolete, then women will soon be extinct — unless we rush down that ominous Brave New World path” (Paglia). It is dangerous for women today as it was before, to leave the important task of supplying money to the men and allowing themselves to be control by the money holders of the society. A big dilemma in the workforce is that women are being paid less than men for the same jobs, “women make up about half our workforce. But they still make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns.
It is, therefore, natural for most companies to think that women cannot be as capable as men in terms of assuming strenuous or challenging positions because women, by default, become less participatory and more vulnerable when they start to have family and children. Apparently, this situation has led to various gender discriminations in the labor market. In conclusion, although the roles of men and women have radically changed over the turn of the century, it is still inevitable to have various gender-related occupational differences because the social and biological roles of women and men do not really change. Society still perceives women as the home makers and men as the earners, and this perception alone defines the differing roles of men and women in the labor market.
Gender inequality is “the unfair treatment of an applicant or employee because of the person’s sex”. Gender inequality or gender discrimination is illegal. Gender inequality did not only start in the workplace. It began before that. In history women were always expected to be the ones at home taking care of children, while the men were the breadwinners of the family.
General speaking, men are physically stronger than women, thus, they perform more labor intensive work not to mention because of the physical appearance, men are often present a more powerful and confident appearance than woman which is more convincing in making a sale. A gender expectation was for women to stay home and take care of the household while men to work and provide the bread and butter for the family. However, this is only the social perception that illustrates the behavioral difference between men and women. Because of this perception of the behavioral differences, it has caused to create barriers, unequal treatment and discrimination between men and women. It is bad to have such perception in this world of freedom, we should have an equal opportunity for every individual and don't let this behavior to bind us all.
