Is there a significant gender gap in pay between women and men as well as discrimination for the same type of job function?
Since the mid-1900's, women have struggled to gain the respect of the working class industry. Women wanted nothing more than to be treated equally and receive the same equal employment opportunities as men. However, in some cases, researchers state that the working class women do not get paid equally for the same job function because discrimination could have played a critical role in the gender gap in equal pay for equal work. One research study states, "there is still a gender pay gap. Women continue to earn considerably less than men on average" (Blah and Kahn, 2007, p. 8). Years ago women wanted more than their primary responsibilities of taking care of the home, children, and family. Several important people were responsible for assisting how women got to this point. Some of these significant changes came to light during President Kennedy's term. It was important to him that he took it upon himself to help make a difference in pay for the working women. Congress was also a critical player for protecting women. They ultimately assisted in passing the law for the Equal Pay Act in 1963. Eventually, this law contributed significant changes in the development of the working class women. According to one research study, it states that "After a half a century of stability in the earnings of women relative to men, there has been a substantial increase in women's relative earnings since the late 1970s" (Blah and Kahn, 2007, p. 7). Although this was a positive gain for females it was determined that discrimination still existed in the workforce, and it did cause problems in the gap. In 1960 women were inspired by the leaders before them. This new generation of women fought for many things like, equality in the workplace, because men were paid more than women for the same job. Considering many men went off to war, so many women took over the jobs they use to have. However, when men returned from the war, they took their jobs back. Companies who hired women before stopped and only hired men. Even the newspapers had a separate listing of jobs for men and women. Both genders would work the same jobs, but would be paid on a different pay scale. Women fought for their rights of equal pay by organizing marches and protests in the nation 's capital. Therefore, the government proposed the Equal Pay Act, which was a victory for women once again. The Equal Pay Act was signed in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, the Equal Pay Act required employers to give men and women equal pay for the same work. On the contrary, women still get paid less than men. According to CNN Money, “men still make more than women in most professions -- considerably more in some occupations than others, according to a new study by the job search site Glassdoor”. Although we like to comfort ourselves with the idea that we have gotten our rightfully earned rights, we had not been given bathroom breaks until 1998. Furthermore, employees are still afraid to have a voice in the workforce. Employers establish rules that let laborers know that they are inferior.
Towards the end of the 1960s a new era in equal rights took place. Following the example of the race movement earlier in the decade, women decided they needed the same gender equality as men. Up to this time in history women were known to society as house wives, and homemakers. According to David Farber, almost every decent-paying job was strictly held by men. With the increase of support for equal gender rights, Hon. Shirley Chisholm came to the rescue. Being the first woman in congress, she knew the hardships and troubles faced due to gender. When she delivered her speech to congress, it was a stepping stone for the history of women’s rights. With her help and focus on the Equal Rights amendment, it was later passed in 1972.

There is a pay gap between men and women in the U.S. The pay gap affects women of all educations levels, and backgrounds. But white men are the largest demographic in labor forces so they possibly favor each other as opposed to women. With all the new acts being passed women were able to go to school and work, and women pursued these new opportunities. There was a rising rate of women enrolling in colleges. Thousands of women were going to college and participating highly in clubs and sometimes sports. Not only were women participating in schooling, women started to hold positions in Congress. Three percent of our congressional representatives were women by the 1970s. There were many newspaper job ads created that were calling for the help of women, thus promoting more women to enter the workforce. Along with these changes there was more personal strengths created in the home. Husbands were getting regularly involved with family meals and housework, thus creating more financial and emotional strength in families (Eisenberg). While the 1960s were a time of advancement for minorities, it was also a time of advancement for women. In 1963, Congress passed the Equal Pay Act, which outlawed discrimination in the workplace based on a person’s sex (Foner 944). To ensure that women would have the same opportunities as men in jobs, education, and political participation, the National Organization for women was formed in 1966 (Foner 944). The sixties also marked the beginning of a public campaign to repeal state laws that banned abortion or left the decision to terminate a pregnancy to physicians instead of the woman (Foner 945).
Nevertheless, historical records help explain pay inequality and they consider this theory. Economists and sociologists have explained that the features of the workers only slightly explain the difference. The education and previous experience have a small impact on the wage gap (Gibelman 23). However, there are examples of jobs that do discriminate against women’s wage. Examples of unequal pay include jobs with the government. These jobs pay more than many others, but there is still discrimination. Even with lawyers, there is a discrimination towards women (Gibelman 23). These jobs include higher paying jobs. When President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, he hoped that it would allow working women to finally earn the same amount of money as men; however, more than half a century later, men continue to out earn women in almost every field of work (Lipman para. 4). Male dominated fields tend to pay more than female dominated fields at similar skill levels. In 2012, women earned an average of $691 per week while men earned an average of $854 per week. Furthermore, the majority of women remain unaware that they are earning less than their male colleagues (Hegewisch para. 1).
The United States has one of the highest gender pay gaps among the developed countries. In the country, the gender pay gap is measured as the ratio of female to males yearly earning among workers in full-time, year round (FTYR) earnings. In 2009, female FTYR earned 77% (0.77) as much as the FTYR male workers (US Census Bureau, 2013). Women are more than half the work force and are graduating at higher rates then men and continue to earn considerably less then men. There are several contributing factors to the gender wage gap. Women experience gender discrimination in the work force even though it’s been illegal since the Equal Pay Act in 1963. One of the challenges for women is uncovering discrimination. There is a lack of transparency in earnings because employees are either contractually prohibited or it’s strongly discouraged from being discussed. Discrimination also occurs in the restricting of women’s access to jobs with the highest commission payments, or access to lucrative clients.
For many years in United States, equal salary pay for women has been a major issue that women have been fighting for decades. This began back in World War II, when the National Labor Board urged equalize the salary rates for women with the same rates that males were getting of the same professions.
