Is there a significant gender gap in pay between women and men as well as discrimination for the same type of job function?

Since the mid-1900's, women have struggled to gain the respect of the working class industry. Women wanted nothing more than to be treated equally and receive the same equal employment opportunities as men. However, in some cases, researchers state that the working class women do not get paid equally for the same job function because discrimination could have played a critical role in the gender gap in equal pay for equal work. One research study states, "there is still a gender pay gap. Women continue to earn considerably less than men on average" (Blah and Kahn, 2007, p. 8). Years ago women wanted more than their primary responsibilities of taking care of the home, children, and family. Several important people were responsible for assisting how women got to this point. Some of these significant changes came to light during President Kennedy's term. It was important to him that he took it upon himself to help make a difference in pay for the working women. Congress was also a critical player for protecting women. They ultimately assisted in passing the law for the Equal Pay Act in 1963. Eventually, this law contributed significant changes in the development of the working class women. According to one research study, it states that "After a half a century of stability in the earnings of women relative to men, there has been a substantial increase in women's relative earnings since the late 1970s" (Blah and Kahn, 2007, p. 7). Although this was a positive gain for females it was determined that discrimination still existed in the workforce, and it did cause problems in the gap.
