What is diversity? According to Merriam- Webster diversity is the state of having several different forms, types, and ideas. On the other hand, education defines diversity as anything that is different from what society has deemed customary. The classroom is the mecca for diversity amongst students, as each student is unique and different. Diversity in the classroom identifies several issues that all teachers should be aware of, they include race and ethnicity, socio- economic status, gender, age and exceptionalities, religion, language, and learning styles. Today gender diversity encompasses new component that deals with gender identity. An identity is the characteristics that make each person unique. However, society has created normalcies that distinctly separate “what is male” from “what is female”. Students who identify with characteristics of the opposite sex fit into this new category of gender diversity. For example, gender identity could include a young boy who plays with dolls and prefers to wear dresses, as opposed to Tonka trunks and sports jerseys (Gender Diversity).
Gender diversity can have a negative impact on a student’s education. Those impacts could include, decreased interactions with others students, increased feelings of inferiority, bullying from peers, and a lack of parental support. Research showed that 78% of students who struggled with gender identity were harassed in schools. These two types of diversity have similar negative effects on students, and they have created an even larger problem. Variation is not the problem with diversity, the problem is society’s need to mandate a normal. What was considered normal fifty years ago is different today, and will be something new fifty years from now. Individuals were created to express differences, and that is why diversity is so unique. Generally when someone begins speaking about diversity in the workplace, thoughts of Affirmative Action, racial diversity, or even sexual equality are usually foremost in our thoughts. However, diversity in the workplace really is so much more than this, we must also consider aging workers, handicapped workers, those with alternative lifestyles, and even physical traits to name others (For the sake of simplification, throughout this paper these will usually be included in the term, minorities).
Diversity in the classrooms will give students access to experience other cultures and learn about one another. The different races effect how varied their backgrounds might be, and it will help the teacher engage a variety of ways to manage course material (Packard, 2017). According to Packard, it is up to the teacher to help spread the learning of diversity and use it to their advantage in their classroom. Throughout the years, diversity have grown in the classrooms, but the struggle of segregation continues.
Gender differences are influences on gender behavior in the way that one must fit through the assumptions and inevitable confusion to distinguish the reality of the assumption. Men and women are obviously different inherently, but not in what they can and cannot do. Men and women are different and have different roles because this is society presented them to the world. Women have the most difficulty getting through these complicated times. There should be equality among all men and women of all races and ethnicity. This is a never-ending issue. We as a society should always know and act on the importance of gender roles, gender equality, and challenges with education in developed and developing countries.
Diversity among students including differences in culture, language and socioeconomic stance is not a new trend. The difference, however, is that today, the school system realizes that all students, including those who differ in some way from the "average" student, or those “at-risk” must be provided with an equal, opportune education (Morris, 1991).
The critical rank for reducing gender inequalities should be education, labor force participation, and lastly, wages. There are obvious differences between men and women whether it’s anatomically, financially, and so forth. The gender inequalities women face compared to men is alarming and saddening. Gender stereotypes reinforce gender inequalities because stereotypes can often be internalized which results in biases against either sex. These biases against a person can result in negative results. Gender inequality has been within our society for a long time especially amongst women.
Diversity in classrooms can open student’s minds to all the world has to offer. At times diversity and understanding of culture, deviant experiences and perspectives can be difficult to fulfill, but with appropriate strategies and resources, it can lead students gaining a high level of respect for those unlike them, preferably than a judgmental and prejudiced view.
One of the main issues today 's students face is the act of being given gender roles and experiencing gender bias. To further explain, "Society treats boys and girls differently and expects them to develop different gender-role identities" (87). Throughout the gender section of the book, there are several examples given on how boys and girls are divided and given gender specific roles. For instance, girls are told that “Women aren’t good at math” and boys are told “Men don’t make good nurses” (87). These stereotypes affect the thinking of the students and later become obstacles when deciding careers. One way I would promote gender equality as a teacher is by completely eliminating the use of stereotypes in my classroom. This change will be accomplished by doing group activities and assignments in the classroom which avoid gender bias. It is important for students to have an equal opportunity to achieve their goals and follow their dreams. Although many do not realize, gender stereotyping is one of the most controversial topics in the field of education. Professionals are constantly trying to find efficient and effective ways to monitor not only teachers and administrators, but the students as well, to be sure that gender stereotyping and gender biases and kept at a minimum within the school environment. With the goal of neither gender biases not gender stereotyping taking place within the school system, higher educational professional constantly seek to find research that can help them understand how to prevent, or possible even cure, biases that are developed to ensure equal rights to all students.
The world is currently undergoing a cultural change, and we live in an increasingly diverse society. This change is not only affect the people in the community but also affect the way education is viewed. Teaching diversity in the classroom and focusing multicultural activities in the programs can help improve positive social behavior in children. There is no question that the education must be prepared to embrace the diversity and to teach an increasingly diverse population of young children.
In the workplace, it is common to encounter individuals of different cultures, ethnicities, and genders. I have learned in this class that diversity is a number of traits that every person has that makes them an individual these traits can be ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age etc. It is important to stay open with diversity realizing it gives one individuality and is a good thing and people need to become aware of this and keep an open mind.
